Real-world use and outcomes of dolutegravir-containing antiretroviral therapy in HIV and tuberculosis co-infection: a site survey and cohort study in sub-Saharan Africa.

J Int AIDS Soc

July 2022

Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics & Institute for Implementation Science in Population Health, CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy, City University of New York, New York, New York, USA.

Introduction: Dolutegravir is being scaled up globally as part of antiretroviral therapy (ART), but for people with HIV and tuberculosis co-infection, its use is complicated by a drug-drug interaction with rifampicin requiring an additional daily dose of dolutegravir. This represents a disadvantage over efavirenz, which does not have a major drug-drug interaction with rifampicin. We sought to describe HIV clinic practices for prescribing concomitant dolutegravir and rifampicin, and characterize virologic outcomes among patients with tuberculosis co-infection receiving dolutegravir or efavirenz.

Cancer is a major global health issue that has a high mortality rate. p53, which functions as a tumor suppressor, is critical in preventing tumor development by regulating the cell cycle and inducing apoptosis in damaged cells. However, the tumor suppressor function of p53 is effectively inhibited by its direct interaction with the hydrophobic cleft of MDM2 protein via multiple mechanisms As a result, restoring p53 activity by blocking the p53-MDM2 protein-protein interaction has been proposed as a compelling therapeutic strategy for cancer treatment.

Background: Decreasing the burden of Tuberculosis (TB) among PLHIV through TB screening is an effective intervention recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). However, after over a decade of implementation in Ghana, the intervention does not realize the expected outcomes. It is also not well understood whether this lack of success is due to implementation barriers.

A subgroup among people living with HIV (PLHIV) experience viral suppression, sometimes to an undetectable level in the blood and/or are able to maintain a healthy CD4+ T-cell count without the influence of antiretroviral (ARV) therapy. One out of three hundred PLHIV fall into this category, and a large sample of this group can be found in areas with a high prevalence of HIV infection such as Nigeria and South Africa. Understanding the mechanism underpinning the nonprogressive phenotype in this subgroup may provide insights into the control of the global HIV epidemic.

Digital sexually transmitted infection and HIV services across prevention and care continuums: evidence and practical resources.

Sex Health

August 2022

School of Health & Life Sciences, Glasgow Caledonian University, Glasgow, UK; and Sandyford Sexual Health Services, NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, Glasgow, UK.

Increased demand for sexual health services (including prevention and treatment) have spurred the development of digital STI/HIV services. Earlier advances in testing technologies opened the door for self-testing and self-sampling approaches, in line with broader self-care strategies. Advances in HIV management mean that many people are living well with HIV and no longer need intensive in-person monitoring, whereas those at-risk of HIV are recommended to have regular asymptomatic STI screening and pre-exposure prophylaxis.

In an integrated poultry-fish (IPF) farming system, fish and bird are reared simultaneously. It is a common practice in Sub-Saharan Africa countries like Nigeria, Cameroon, Madagascar, and Benin, offering economic benefits to farmers and minimizing farm running costs. It seems like another way for farmers to manage poultry waste as it is a common practice in IPF farm settings to feed reared fishes with wastes emanating from the poultry.

Pollution and health: a progress update.

Lancet Planet Health

June 2022

Ministry of Education, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Children's Environmental Health, Xinhua Hospital, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Pollution caused around 9 million premature deaths globally in 2015 and remains the leading environmental risk factor for disease, accounting for one in six deaths.
  • While deaths from extreme poverty-related pollution types have decreased, this is countered by a rise in deaths from modern pollution, such as ambient air pollution and toxic chemicals, which have increased significantly since 2000.
  • Effective management of pollution requires global cooperation and a formal science-policy interface to address this complex issue that links pollution to climate change and biodiversity loss.

In the vast majority of malignancies, the p53 tumor suppressor pathway is compromised. In some cancer cells, high levels of MDM2 polyubiquitinate p53 and mark it for destruction, thereby leading to a corresponding downregulation of the protein. MDM2 interacts with p53 via its hydrophobic pocket, and chemical entities that block the dimerization of the protein-protein complex can restore p53 activity.
