Objective: Breast cancer (BC) is a global concern due to its high incidence worldwide. The alarming increase in BC cases highlights the need for careful management of the disease at multiple levels. This study investigated the diagnostic value of hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte and platelet counts (HALP score), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) in newly diagnosed BC patients.

Background: Dynamins are defined as a group of molecules with GTPase activity. Among them, DNM3 has gained recognition in oncology for its tumor suppressor role. Based on this, the aim of this study is to investigate the effects of the DNM3 gene in patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer using bioinformatics databases.

Mycosis fungoides (MF) is the most prevalent type of cutaneous T cell lymphomas. Studies on the prognosis of MF are limited, and no research exists on the potential of artificial intelligence to predict MF prognosis. This study aimed to compare the predictive capabilities of various machine learning (ML) algorithms in predicting progression, treatment response, and relapse and to assess their predictive power against that of the Cox proportional hazards (CPH) model in patients with early-stage MF.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the role of neuropeptide receptors (HCRTR1, HCRTR2, NPY4R) and associated genes (PPY, PTPN11) in breast cancer by using bioinformatics tools on large patient datasets.
  • Significant mutations were found, with decreased expression of HCRTR1 linked to poorer overall and relapse-free survival, while elevated levels of HCRTR2 and PPY correlated with better outcomes.
  • The study also revealed hypermethylation of HCRTR1 and NPY4R, while HCRTR2 and PPY were hypomethylated, indicating complex regulatory patterns affecting their gene expressions in breast cancer.

Introduction Glaucoma is a chronic disease that can lead to severe visual impairment and blindness. Methods The study included 91 primary open-angle glaucoma patients aged 60 years and older (group 1) and 83 healthy controls (group 2) with similar age and gender distribution. The duration of the disease, the number of anti-glaucomatous drops used daily, and visual field parameters were recorded.

Hastaneler Cad., Kumluca Mevki, 51100 Merkez/Nigde, Turkey; Nigde Omer Halisdemir University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Medical Biochemistry, Nigde Ömer Halisdemir Üniversitesi Merkez Yerleşkesi, Tıp Fakültesi Bor Yolu Üzeri, 51240 Merkez/Nigde, Turkey.

Aims: We aimed to examine the role of circulating immature granulocytes (IGs) in assessing Diabetic Nephropathy (DN) mainly and also associations of other leukocyte parameters with DN.

Methods: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, a total of 164 Diabetes Mellitus patients were grouped as normoalbuminuric and microalbuminuric according to urinary albumin excretion in the course of admission. Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), IG count (IG#) and IG percentage (IG%) levels were compared between the groups.

The main aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computerized tomography (PET/CT) parameters in predicting the Kristen rat sarcoma viral oncogene() mutation status of patients with colon cancer. Between April 2013 and December 2020, 79 patients who were diagnosed with colon cancer by colonoscopy underwent staging FDG PET/CT with this diagnosis and met all the inclusion criteria were included in this study. Clinical and prognostic features and also imaging (FDG PET/CT and magnetic resonance imaging) reports of the patients were collected and analyzed retrospectively.

Adrenal adenomas are observed in up to 7% of the population and are predominantly non-functional, increased F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake is seen in only a small portion of them on F-FDG positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging. In this report, we present the sequential F-FDG PET/CT imaging findings of 2 patients with radiologically or pathologically confirmed adrenal adenomas who had severely altered F-FDG uptake patterns in adrenal lesions in different imaging studies of the same patient. In light of these findings, we wanted to highlight that evaluating adrenal adenomas as cross-sectional with semi-quantitative PET/CT parameters obtained from single imaging may cause misinterpretation.

A 70-year-old man underwent right upper lobectomy for lung adenocarcinoma. During the operation, hemostatic matrix (as known Floseal) was used to prevent pulmonary laceration-associated bleeding. When F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography was performed for staging after surgery, intense F-FDG uptake was observed in the cicatricial fibrotic tissue in the operation area, and no significant change was observed in that area during the 4-year follow-up.

Metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) remains a challenging condition to treat despite recent advancements. This retrospective study aimed to assess the activity and tolerability of Lutetium-177 (Lu-177) PSMA-617 radioligand therapy (RLT) in mCRPC patients across multiple cancer centers in Turkey. The study included 165 patients who received at least one cycle of Lu-177 PSMA-617 RLT, with the majority having bone metastases and undergone prior treatments.

Objective: The increasing prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents has turned hypertension into an important public health issue. In the current literature, auscultatory blood pressure measurement is recommended for the diagnosis of hypertension. The number of studies comparing electronic blood pressure measurement and auscultatory blood pressure measurement is limited.

Aims: The aim of the study is to demonstrate a non-invasive alternative method to aid the decision making process in the management of adrenal masses.

Background: Lipid-poor adenomas constitute 30% of all adrenal adenomas. When discovered incidentally, additional dynamic adrenal examinations are required to differentiate them from an adrenal malignancy or pheochromocytoma.

Purpose: Hypoparathyroidism is a disease characterized by low serum calcium, increased serum phosphorus and low PTH levels. Although patients are treated with active vitamin D and calcium, a proper serum calcium phosphorus balance cannot always be achieved. Ectopic calcifications that develop in organs during treatment are the most common complications.

A rare tumor case in an adult patient with neurofibromatosis: Lumbar ependymoma.

Niger J Clin Pract

February 2022

Department of Neurosurgery, Fırat University, Elazığ, Turkey.

In patients with type 1 neurofibromatosis (NF1), there is an increased susceptibility to tumor development in the central nervous system due to the loss of neurofibromin, an inactivator of the protooncogene Ras. NF1 has a broad clinical spectrum, which includes spinal tumors. Although the most common intramedullary tumor of the spinal cord in adults is ependymoma, few patients with NF1 accompanied by spinal ependymoma have been reported to date, and the localization of the tumors is cervical and thoracic in these cases.
