Some but not other studies on oxytocin for schizophrenia, particularly those using a higher dose, indicate that oxytocin improves negative symptoms of schizophrenia. We performed an add-on randomized controlled trial to examine the effect of high-dose oxytocin, social skills training, and their combination in the treatment of negative symptoms and social dysfunction in schizophrenia. Fifty-one subjects with schizophrenia were randomized, employing a two-by-two design: intranasal oxytocin (24 IU X3/day) or placebo, and social skills training or supportive psychotherapy, for 3 weeks.

Introduction: Cypriot Greek is the variety of Greek language used for oral communication by the Greek Cypriot people, while Standard Modern Greek is the official language. Roluperidone has antagonist properties for 5-HT, sigma, α- and α-adrenergic receptors, but no dopaminergic binding affinities. In 2 randomized controlled trials (RCT), treatment improved negative symptoms of schizophrenia and social functioning among patients with moderate to severe negative symptoms. We report results of the protocol specified analysis of 2 open-label extension studies of 24 and 40 weeks investigating whether improvement of negative symptoms was sustained without significant adverse effects or worsening of psychosis.

Personal narratives make up more than half of children's conversations. The ability to share personal narratives helps build and maintain friendships, promotes physical and emotional wellbeing, supports classroom participation, and underpins academic success and vocational outcomes. Although personal narratives are a universal discourse genre, cross-cultural and cross-linguistic research into children's ability to share personal narratives is in its infancy.

Free Living Amoebae (FLA) are ubiquitous microorganisms reported from harsh environmental conditions. Oil refinery facilities consume vast volumes of water during their processes, generating a large amount of wastewater. The present study aimed to evaluate the wastewater treatment process in an oil refinery wastewater treatment facility (ORWWTF) for the presence of FLA.

Background: This is a placebo-controlled multi-national trial of roluperidone, a compound with antagonist properties for 5-HT2A, sigma2, and α1A-adrenergic receptors, targeting negative symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. This trial follows a previous trial that demonstrated roluperidone superiority over placebo in a similar patient population.

Methods: Roluperidone 32 mg/day, roluperidone 64 mg/day, or placebo was administered for 12 weeks to 513 patients with schizophrenia with moderate to severe negative symptoms.

The effects of JNJ-39393406 a positive allosteric nicotine modulator on mood and cognition in patients with unipolar depression: A double-blind, add-on, placebo-controlled trial.

October 2021

Department of Psychiatry, Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, Ramat Gan 52621, Israel; Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel. Electronic address:

Nicotinic agonists have been shown to improve cognition and mood, but this improvement is inconsistent and short-lived, possibly due to receptor desensitization. Positive Allosteric Modulators (PAMs) of the nicotinic alpha-7 nicotinic-acetyl-choline receptor (a7nAChR) are hypothesized to change the configuration of the nicotinic receptor and delay desensitization, potentially increasing the duration of the activation of the receptor, and improving clinical efficacy. This was a randomized controlled trial (RCT) adding JNJ-39393406 9 (a PAM of the a7nAChR) (n=35) or placebo (n=36) to treatment as usual for two weeks in 71 patients with unipolar depression.

Complications do occur in daily clinical life and can sometimes lead to litigation, which adversely affect the entire health care system, leading to a loss of confidence in medical providers, an increase in defensive medical practice and high professional indemnity insurance costs. Some complications are inevitable but can be minimised by completing a structured training programme. The likelihood of litigation can be reduced when adequate and clear information is given to the patient preoperatively.
