Article Synopsis
  • Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare genetic disorder that affects ciliary function, leading to airway clearance issues and sometimes organ positioning defects (laterality defects), with a study conducted across 19 countries to analyze gene defects and their clinical implications.
  • The study involved 1236 individuals with a variety of pathogenic DNA variants and found significant geographical differences in PCD genotypes, with varying rates of laterality defects and distinct genetic characteristics linked to different countries.
  • Results revealed that individuals with PCD often have lower lung function (measured by forced expiratory volume) and that the presence of certain genetic variants can correlate with more severe clinical outcomes, highlighting the importance of genetic understanding in diagnosing

National responses should be improved and accelerated to meet the target of ending the Acquired ImmunoDeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) epidemic by 2030. In the Republic of Cyprus, Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), accounting approximately for half of all annual HIV diagnoses. This study assesses the evolution of HIV incidence in MSM in Cyprus until 2030 using a model calibrated to Cypriot epidemiological data.

Objectives: Abstaining from tobacco smoking may not only improve general health, but also reduce teeth staining and restore teeth whiteness. Compared with conventional cigarettes, E-cigarettes (ECs) and heated tobacco products (HTPs) may offer substantial reduction in exposure to pigmented tar-like compounds of cigarette smoke. It is possible that improvements in dental color indices may be observed in those who have stopped smoking combustible cigarettes by switching to tar-free nicotine delivery products.

Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is a water-soluble vitamin capable of directly donating electrons to reactive oxygen species, attenuating electrical remodeling, and cardiac dysfunction in patients undergoing cardiac surgery (CS), considered one of the most effective defenses against free radicals in the blood, thus being one of the first antioxidants consumed during oxidative stress. The aim of this review is to assess the effects of perioperative administration of vitamin C in CS patients. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in order to identify prospective cohort studies and/or randomized controlled trials reporting on the perioperative effects of vitamin C among adult patients undergoing CS.

Introduction: The pathophysiology of Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is not completely understood and the role of chronic stress is among the main mechanistic links. The aim of this study was to explore whether accumulating hair cortisol concentration (HCC), a novel biomarker of chronic stress, is associated with the occurrence of TTS.

Methods: A consecutive series of 18 TTS patients and 36 age and sex matched healthy controls were included in our analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • Restless legs syndrome (RLS) affects nearly 10% of older adults, but many face delays in diagnosis and treatment.
  • A large-scale genetic study identified 164 risk loci for RLS, enhancing our understanding of its genetic basis and showing similarities in genetic predispositions between sexes.
  • Findings suggest potential drug targets, a relationship between RLS and diabetes, and highlight the effectiveness of machine learning in predicting RLS risk using genetic and other data.

Despite recent therapeutic advancements, outcomes for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain unsatisfactory, highlighting the need for novel treatments. The CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) gene-editing technology offers innovative treatment approaches, involving genetic manipulation of either cancer cells or adoptive T cells to combat HCC. This review comprehensively assesses the applications of CRISPR systems in HCC treatment, focusing on in vivo targeting of cancer cells and the development of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells and T cell receptor (TCR)-engineered T cells.

Dynamic heterogeneity in COVID-19: Insights from a mathematical model.

PLoS One

May 2024

Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Cancer Biophysics Laboratory, University of Cyprus, Nicosia, Cyprus.

Critical illness, such as severe COVID-19, is heterogenous in presentation and treatment response. However, it remains possible that clinical course may be influenced by dynamic and/or random events such that similar patients subject to similar injuries may yet follow different trajectories. We deployed a mechanistic mathematical model of COVID-19 to determine the range of possible clinical courses after SARS-CoV-2 infection, which may follow from specific changes in viral properties, immune properties, treatment modality and random external factors such as initial viral load.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and lockdown reduced physical activity levels in hemodialysis (HD) patients and kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). This study aimed to describe physical activity levels during lockdown and assess the effects of an online home-based exercise training program on physical activity levels in HD patients and KTRs.

Methods: Forty-five HD patients and thirty-five KTRs were divided into four groups: exercise groups 1 (ΕΧ-HD) and 2 (EX-KTR) followed a 4-month tele-exercise training program, while control groups received usual care.

Diabetic atherosclerosis is a complex process that is characterized by diffuse and unstable lesions increasing 2-4-fold the risk of adverse cardiovascular (CV) events. Diabetic dyslipidemia has a predominant role in coronary artery disease (CAD) and has been the target of classical and emerging pharmaceutical agents with established or promising CV benefits. The aim of the present narrative review was to summarize the effects of classical and novel lipid-lowering pharmaceutical agents on lipid profile and CV outcomes in diabetic patients with established CAD or high risk of CAD.

It has been well established that arterial hypertension is considered as a predominant risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases. Despite the link between arterial hypertension and cardiovascular diseases, arterial hypertension may directly affect cardiac function, leading to heart failure, mostly with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). There are echocardiographic findings indicating hypertensive heart disease (HHD), defined as altered cardiac morphology (left ventricular concentric hypertrophy, left atrium dilatation) and function (systolic or diastolic dysfunction) in patients with persistent arterial hypertension irrespective of the cardiac pathologies to which it contributes, such as coronary artery disease and kidney function impairment.
