Treosulfan, a cytotoxic prodrug, has gained popularity due to its lower toxicity compared to traditional alkylating agents used for conditioning treatment.

Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies worldwide and is the leading cause of anemia in the pediatric population (microcytic, hypochromic anemia due to iron deficiency). Moreover, untreated iron deficiency can lead to various systemic consequences and can disrupt the child's development. Despite this, some patients still die before starting treatment or in an early phase of therapy before achieving remission. The study analysed the frequency, clinical features and risk factors for early deaths (ED) and treatment related deaths (TRD) of children and adolescents with AML.

Background: Cardiovascular diseases are among the most common chronic diseases, generating high social and economic costs. Oral findings such as inflammation, ulcerations, or lesions can indicate serious systemic diseases and should prompt suspicion of acquired chronic conditions or inborn errors of immunity (IEIs). Currently, there are approximately 500 disease entities classified as IEIs, with the list expanding annually. The awareness of the existence of such conditions is of paramount importance, as patients with these disorders frequently necessitate the utilization of enhanced diagnostic techniques.

Impact and Implications of Neurocognitive Dysfunction in the Management of Ischemic Heart Failure.

Neurocognitive dysfunction is common in heart failure (HF), with 30% to 80% of patients experiencing some degree of deficits in one or more cognitive domains, including memory, attention, learning ability, executive function, and psychomotor speed. Although the mechanism is not fully understood, reduced cardiac output, comorbidities, chronic cerebral hypoperfusion, and cardioembolic brain injury leading to cerebral hypoxia and brain damage seem to trigger the neurocognitive dysfunction in HF. Cognitive impairment is independently associated with worse outcomes including mortality, rehospitalization, and reduced quality of life.

Impact of prophylaxis with rituximab on EBV-related complications after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation in children.

Background: Children undergoing allo-HCT are at high risk of EBV-related complications. The objective of the study was to analyze the impact of prophylactic post-transplant rituximab on EBV infection and EBV-PTLD in children after allo-HCT, to determine the risk factors for the development of EBV infection and EBV-PTLD and to determine their outcomes. Additionally, the impact of EBV-driven complications on transplant outcomes was analyzed.

Pitfalls in definitions on respiratory viruses and particularities of Adenovirus infection in hematopoietic cell transplantation patients: Recommendations from the EBMT practice harmonization and guidelines committee.

In 2023, the EBMT Practice harmonization and Guidelines Committee partnered with the EBMT Infection Diseases Working Party (IDWP) to undertake the task of delivering best practice recommendations, aiming to harmonize by expert consensus, the already existing definitions and future epidemiological and clinical studies among centers of the EBMT network. To attain this objective, a group of experts in the field was convened. The workgroup identified and discussed some critical aspects in definitions of community-acquired respiratory viruses (CARV) and adenovirus (ADV) infections in recipient of hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT).

The early identification and accurate management of malnutrition in children receiving anticancer treatment are crucial components to integrate into comprehensive medical care. Given the scarcity of high-quality literature on this topic, a consensus statement process was chosen over other approaches, such as guidelines, to provide comprehensive recommendations.

Effect of food on selumetinib pharmacokinetics and gastrointestinal tolerability in adolescents with neurofibromatosis type 1-related plexiform neurofibromas.

Background: Selumetinib is approved for the treatment of pediatric patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) who have symptomatic, inoperable plexiform neurofibromas (PN) in multiple countries, including the USA (≥ 2 years). Until recently, individuals had to take selumetinib twice daily (BID) in a fasted state. This study evaluated the effect of a low-fat meal on selumetinib PK parameters and gastrointestinal (GI) tolerability in adolescent participants with NF1-PN.
