"I don't feel fully prepared": a qualitative study of recently graduated students' mental health experiences of the transition out of university.

Objective: This study aimed to better understand the mental health experiences of students as they prepared to transition out of university.

Participants: Participants included 18 recently graduated students from a Canadian university.

Methods: Virtual one-on-one semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted and analyzed following the protocol for content analysis and using QSR NVivo.

COVID-19 and Mortality in the Spinal Cord Injury Population: Examining the Impact of Sex, Mental Health, and Injury Etiology.

Background/objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mortality rates in a community-dwelling spinal cord injury (SCI) population in Ontario.

Methods: Using health administrative databases, monthly mortality rates were evaluated pre-pandemic, during the pandemic, and post-pandemic from March 2014 to May 2024. Data were stratified by sex, injury etiology, and mental health status.

Community college student perceptions of digital anatomy models as a curricular resource.

Digital model platforms and applications are common in anatomy education and continue to grow in number, which suggests that educators and students find use for these tools despite the lack of widely accepted best practices. Consequently, it is a challenge for educators to mindfully integrate digital models into curriculum. This short-term, longitudinal study investigated the effects of integrating a monoscopic digital model as a teaching tool during lectures on reproductive and endocrine anatomy as an intervention in a community college human anatomy and physiology course.

Interest in food-derived bioactive peptides is on the rise. In 2023, the 3rd International Symposium on Bioactive Peptides (ISBP) was held in Niagara Falls, Canada, to provide a platform for knowledge exchange, networking, and collaboration among researchers in this field. This article aims to provide a high-level overview of the key progress and emerging trends in bioactive peptides based on the 3rd ISBP.

Leg Cycle Ergometry in Critically Ill Patients - An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Cycle ergometry is a rehabilitation strategy used in the intensive care unit (ICU) which may help mitigate post-ICU impairments. We aimed to systematically review and summarize evidence examining the efficacy and safety of cycle ergometry in the ICU.

Methods: We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of critically ill adults with any diagnosis admitted to the ICU for >24 hours, comparing cycling interventions to control (no cycling).

The research activities of Ontario's large community hospitals: an updated scoping review.

Background: Community hospitals provide the majority of patient care in Canada but traditionally do not participate in clinical research. The disconnect between where most patients receive their health care and where health research is conducted leads to decreased study recruitment, reduced generalizability of study results, and inequitable patient access to novel therapies. A scoping review of the research activities of Ontario's large community hospitals (LCHs) between 2013 and 2015 reported an annualized output of 266 publications.

ATH434, a promising iron-targeting compound for treating iron regulation disorders.

Cytotoxic accumulation of loosely bound mitochondrial Fe2+ is a hallmark of Friedreich's Ataxia (FA), a rare and fatal neuromuscular disorder with limited therapeutic options. There are no clinically approved medications targeting excess Fe2+ associated with FA or the neurological disorders Parkinson's disease and Multiple System Atrophy. Traditional iron-chelating drugs clinically approved for systemic iron overload that target ferritin-stored Fe3+ for urinary excretion demonstrated limited efficacy in FA and exacerbated ataxia.

The second FASEB conference on Nuclear Bodies: Hubs of Genome Activity was held June 2-7, 2024, at Niagara Falls, NY. The central theme was how these protein and RNA-protein complexes that are situated in the nucleus outside the genome support and regulate gene expression. Topics included their relevance to disease, especially cancer, their molecular dynamics, and their phase separation transition properties.

Perioperative Durvalumab with Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy in Operable Bladder Cancer.

Background: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by radical cystectomy is the standard treatment for cisplatin-eligible patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Adding perioperative immunotherapy may improve outcomes.

Methods: In this phase 3, open-label, randomized trial, we assigned, in a 1:1 ratio, cisplatin-eligible patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer to receive neoadjuvant durvalumab plus gemcitabine-cisplatin every 3 weeks for four cycles, followed by radical cystectomy and adjuvant durvalumab every 4 weeks for eight cycles (durvalumab group), or to receive neoadjuvant gemcitabine-cisplatin followed by radical cystectomy alone (comparison group).

Canadian beach cohort study: protocol of a prospective study to assess the burden of recreational water illness.

Background: Recreational water activities at beaches are popular among Canadians. However, these activities can increase the risk of recreational water illnesses (RWI) among beachgoers. Few studies have been conducted in Canada to determine the risk of these illnesses.

A 2-Day Postpartum CBT-Based Training for Nurses.

Background: Public health nurses (PHNs) are often a first point of contact for postpartum individuals seeking mental health support, but report limited training related to mental health.

Purpose: To determine whether a two-day cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-based training program focused on postpartum maternal mental health can improve PHN perceptions of their ability to deliver CBT techniques, their confidence working with distressed clients, and with managing client resistance to treatment recommendations.

Methods: A convenience sample of 45 PHNs working in the Family Health Division of Niagara Region Public Health in Ontario, Canada were assessed before and after they received a two-day CBT-based training program.

Background: Timely diagnosis and treatment for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) requires a coordinated response from multiple providers. Rapid intervention is key to reducing mortality and morbidity. Activation of the cardiac catheterization laboratory may occur through verbal communication and may also involve the secure sharing of electrocardiographic images between frontline health care providers and interventional cardiologists.

Working Remotely, Feeling Remote? The Role of Digitally Mediated Communication in Shaping the Identity of Virtual Expatriates.

Utilizing the social identity theory, this conceptual article has proposed how digitally mediated communication between expatriates and host country nationals (HCNs) in a remote work arrangement is linked with individualized change experiences of virtual expatriates. The conceptualized model proposes that the lack of in-depth conversations via virtual communication platforms leads to the development of weak emotional interactions between virtual expatriates and HCNs. However, weakened emotional interactions might result in positive or negative impact on expatriates' identity based on personality-based differences.

Evaluating automatic annotation of lexicon-based models for stance detection of M-pox tweets from May 1st to Sep 5th, 2022.

Manually labeling data for supervised learning is time and energy consuming; therefore, lexicon-based models such as VADER and TextBlob are used to automatically label data. However, it is argued that automated labels do not have the accuracy required for training an efficient model. Although automated labeling is frequently used for stance detection, automated stance labels have not been properly evaluated, in the previous works.

A mixed methods approach to describe the efficacy of lift assist device use to reduce low back musculoskeletal disorder risk factors during three common patient extrication scenarios.

This mixed-method study evaluated the efficacy of lift assist device use (Binder®, Eagle®, Maxi Air®) relative to manual lifting/care-as-usual in reducing low back muscle activity and perceived exertion during simulated patient extrication tasks. User feedback was recorded to identify factors that might influence use. Twenty paramedics performed a floor to stretcher lift, lateral transfer, and confined space extrication care-as-usual and with lift assist devices.

Coercive Control in 2SLGBTQQIA+ Relationships: A Scoping Review.

Existing measures and theories of intimate partner coercive control largely evaluate men's coercion of women. The extent of knowledge pertaining to intimate relationships among other genders and sexual identities is unclear. Guided by a theoretical framework of intersectionality, we examined and synthesized original studies on coercive control by (perpetration) or against (victimization) Two Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, questioning, intersex, and asexual individuals within intimate partner relationships.

Treatment of locally advanced pancreatic cancer using localized trans-arterial micro perfusion of gemcitabine: combined analysis of RR1 and RR2.

Background: Locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC) comprises 40% of pancreatic cancer diagnoses and has a relatively poor prognosis. Trans-arterial micro perfusion (TAMP)-mediated chemotherapy delivery to the primary tumor is a novel approach worthy of investigation. The RR1 (dose escalation) and RR2 (observational) studies examined the safety and preliminary efficacy of TAMP-delivered gemcitabine for LAPC.

Ablative Radiation Therapy to Restrain Everything Safely Treatable (ARREST): A Phase 1 Study of Stereotactic Ablative Radiation Therapy for Polymetastatic Disease.

Purpose: This phase 1 study aimed to assess the safety and feasibility of SABR therapy delivery to all sites of polymetastatic disease (>10 metastases).

Methods And Materials: A 3 + 3 study design was used with 5 dose levels from 6 Gy (6 Gy × 1) to 30 Gy (6 Gy weekly × 5). Dose-limiting toxicity (DLT) was defined as any grade 4 or 5 toxicity or more than 3 grade 3 toxicities within 6 weeks of treatment.

Practice recommendations regarding parental presence in NICUs during pandemics caused by respiratory pathogens like COVID-19.

Aim: To co-create parental presence practice recommendations across Canadian NICUs during pandemics caused by respiratory pathogens such as COVID-19.

Methods: Recommendations were developed through evidence, context, Delphi and Values and Preferences methods. For Delphi 1 and 2, participants rated 50 items and 20 items respectively on a scale from 1 (very low importance) to 5 (very high).
