Background: Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein induced experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is the most commonly used animal model of multiple sclerosis. However, variations in the induction protocol can affect EAE progression, and may reduce the comparability of data.

Optimized Method: In the present study, we investigated the influence of the different components used for EAE induction in C57BL/6J mice on disease progression.

Aside from the established immune-mediated etiology of multiple sclerosis (MS), compelling evidence implicates platelets as important players in disease pathogenesis. Specifically, numerous studies have highlighted that activated platelets promote the central nervous system (CNS)-directed adaptive immune response early in the disease course. Platelets, therefore, present a novel opportunity for modulating the neuroinflammatory process that characterizes MS.

Objective: Evidence for the management of acute otitis externa (AOE) is limited, with unclear diagnostic criteria and variably reported outcome measures that may not reflect key stakeholder priorities. We aimed to develop 1) a definition, 2) diagnostic criteria and 3) a core outcome set (COS) for AOE.

Study Design: COS development according to Core Outcome Measures in Effectiveness Trials (COMET) methodology and parallel consensus selection of diagnostic criteria/definition.

Aims: Malignancy and surgery are risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE). We undertook a systematic review of the literature concerning the prophylactic management of VTE in orthopaedic oncology patients.

Methods: MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE (Ovid), Cochrane, and CINAHL databases were searched focusing on VTE, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), bleeding, or wound complication rates.

A scoping review of trials for cell-based therapies in human spinal cord injury.

Spinal Cord

August 2020

Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation, College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, University of Glasgow, Glasgow, UK.

Introduction: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is associated with significant and life-long disability. Yet, despite decades of research, no regenerative treatment has reached clinical practice. Cell-based therapies are one possible regenerative strategy beginning to transfer to human trials from a more extensive pre-clinical basis.

Gait analysis with wearables predicts conversion to parkinson disease.

Ann Neurol

September 2019

Center for Neurology and Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research, Department of Neurodegenerative Diseases, University Hospital Tübingen, and Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases, Tübingen, Germany.

Objective: Quantification of gait with wearable technology is promising; recent cross-sectional studies showed that gait characteristics are potential prodromal markers for Parkinson disease (PD). The aim of this longitudinal prospective observational study was to establish gait impairments and trajectories in the prodromal phase of PD, identifying which gait characteristics are potentially early diagnostic markers of PD.

Methods: The 696 healthy controls (mean age = 63 ± 7 years) recruited in the Tubingen Evaluation of Risk Factors for Early Detection of Neurodegeneration study were included.

Is sharing speaker's slides from conference presentations on social media a breach of intellectual property or a delegate's right? Depends who you ask.

Int J Surg

October 2018

Newcastle Centre for Bowel Disease research group & Department of Colorectal Surgery, RVI, Newcastle Upon Tyne University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Newcastle, England, UK. Electronic address:

Background: The contemporary practice of the sharing of speaker's slides from medical conference presentations is common but raises a number of complex ethical and legal questions. We investigated the views of a large group of international hernia surgeons to evaluate the comtemporary view on this topic.

Methods: A questionnaire was widely promoted on Twitter and distributed by email to target the membership of the British and European Hernia Societies.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates if swallowing ability measured before surgery can predict swallowing recovery post-transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for head and neck cancer patients.
  • - Conducted at a cancer center in the UK, it involved 51 patients, with most showing moderate-to-severe health issues, and many needing tube feeding following the surgery.
  • - Results indicate a significant correlation between pre-treatment swallowing assessments and the length of time patients required tube feeding, suggesting these measures can be valuable for predicting recovery.

Refining the head and neck cancer referral guidelines: a two centre analysis of 4715 referrals.

Br J Oral Maxillofac Surg

February 2016

Department of Otolaryngology, Head-Neck Surgery, Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne University Hospitals NHS Trust, UK; Northern Institute for Cancer Research, Newcastle University, UK. Electronic address:

Our aim was to identify the set of referral criteria that will offer optimal diagnostic efficacy in patients suspected to have head and neck cancer (HNC) in the primary care setting. We analysed the referral criteria and outcomes from two tertiary care cancer centres in the United Kingdom. Between 2007 and 2010, 4715 patients were referred via the fast track system with a suspected HNC.

Introduction: 30-day mortality is routinely used to assess proximal femoral fracture care, though patients might remain at risk for poor outcome for longer. This work has examined the survivorship out to one year of a consecutive series of patients admitted for proximal femoral fracture to a single institution. We wished to quantify the temporal impact of fracture upon mortality, and also the influence of patient age, gender, surgical delay and length of stay on mortality from both cardiorespiratory and non-cardiorespiratory causes.
