Introduction: Acellular dermal matrix (ADM) is frequently used during prepectoral tissue expander-based breast reconstruction. However, there has been a paucity of literature describing the experience of prepectoral reconstruction without the accompanying use of ADM. We seek to highlight our institutional experience with immediate prepectoral tissue expander placement without the use of ADM in breast reconstruction.

Morbidity and mortality are higher in older adults with COVID-19, but their decisions about aggressive care, severity of disease, and outcomes during the first surge in New York City are not well characterized. We sought to determine if the oldest patients chose intubation and comfort care at different rates compared to younger geriatric patients. We also studied outcomes among patients admitted with severe disease and those who chose aggressive versus comfort care.

Cancer healthcare disparities among African Americans in the United States.

QED, 8000 Marina Boulevard, Suite 400, Brisbane, CA, United States; Present address: Inivata, 7020 Kit Creek Road #140, Morrisville, NC, United States.

A need exists to examine racial disparities in the healthcare arena and the impact on patients with cancer. Despite ongoing efforts to increase equity in primary healthcare access, racial and socioeconomic disparities persist, thus contributing to disproportionate treatment outcomes and survivorship among minority and low-income patients. Such disparities have been revealed in treatment cohorts of patients with multiple forms of cancer, including breast, cervical, ovarian, endometrial, prostate, lung, colorectal, gastrointestinal, and hepatocellular, and have been attributed to a range of co-occurring behavioral, social determinants of health, underlying genetic factors, as well as access to educational opportunities that limit the quality of informed healthcare.

We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 30 functional magnetic resonance imaging studies investigating processing of musical rhythms in neurotypical adults. First, we identified a general network for musical rhythm, encompassing all relevant sensory and motor processes (Beat-based, rest baseline, 12 contrasts) which revealed a large network involving auditory and motor regions. This network included the bilateral superior temporal cortices, supplementary motor area (SMA), putamen, and cerebellum.

Background: Primary and metastatic prostate cancers have low mutation rates and recurrent alterations in a small set of genes, enabling targeted sequencing of prostate cancer-associated genes as an efficient approach to characterizing patient samples (compared to whole-exome and whole-genome sequencing). For example, targeted sequencing provides a flexible, rapid, and cost-effective method for genomic assessment of patient-derived cell lines to evaluate fidelity to initial patient tumor samples.

Methods: We developed a prostate cancer-specific targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) panel to detect alterations in 62 prostate cancer-associated genes as well as recurring gene fusions with ETS family members, representing the majority of common alterations in prostate cancer.

Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) continue to be major concerns for morbidity and mortality, especially in patients treated in the intensive care unit. With the rise in multidrug-resistant organisms, HAP and VAP treatment is challenged by the need for early appropriate treatment, with broad-spectrum agents, while still being aware of the principles of antibiotic stewardship. The two major society guidelines proposed a series of risk factors in their most recent guidelines to help identify patients who can most benefit from narrow- or broad-spectrum initial empiric antibiotic therapy.

The goal of therapy for patients with essential thrombocythemia (ET) and polycythemia vera (PV) is to reduce thrombotic events by normalizing blood counts. Hydroxyurea (HU) and interferon-α (IFN-α) are the most frequently used cytoreductive options for patients with ET and PV at high risk for vascular complications. Myeloproliferative Disorders Research Consortium 112 was an investigator-initiated, phase 3 trial comparing HU to pegylated IFN-α (PEG) in treatment-naïve, high-risk patients with ET/PV.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on identifying tumors that commonly metastasize to the stomach and the morphological features that help in diagnosis, especially when the patient's cancer history is unknown.
  • A total of 150 patients were analyzed, with epithelial tumors being the most common (73.3%), and lobular breast carcinoma identified as the most frequent type in women, while melanoma was the most seen in men.
  • The results emphasize the importance of considering metastatic neoplasms in gastric cancer diagnosis, particularly those exhibiting a solid/diffuse growth pattern, as glandular neoplasms can be hard to differentiate from primary stomach tumors.
