Background: Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) is the favored renal replacement therapy in critically ill patients. Predicting clinical outcomes for CRRT patients is difficult due to population heterogeneity, varying clinical practices, and limited sample sizes.

Objective: We aimed to predict survival to ICUs and hospital discharge in children and young adults receiving CRRT using machine learning (ML) techniques.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of vasopressin versus other vasopressors (like norepinephrine and epinephrine) on kidney outcomes in children and young adults undergoing continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT).
  • Data was analyzed from a multicenter cohort including 1,016 patients under 25 years in pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) over nearly seven years.
  • Results show that vasopressin use is linked to higher risks of major adverse kidney events (MAKE-90), especially when started later in the CRRT process, indicating potential negative effects on kidney health.

Background: Hispanic patients have a higher incidence of gastric cancer when compared to non-Hispanics. Outlining clinicodemographic characteristics and assessing the impact of ethnicity on stage-specific survival may identify opportunities to improve gastric cancer care for this population.

Methods: Patients with gastric cancer in the US Safety Net Collaborative (2012-2014) were retrospectively reviewed.

Femoral Neck Notching in Dual Mobility Implants: Is This a Reason for Concern?

J Arthroplasty

August 2021

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, NYU Langone Health, New York, NY; Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Lenox Hill Hospital, New York, NY.

Background: Dual mobility (DM) total hip arthroplasty (THA) implants have been advocated for patients at risk for impingement due to abnormal spinopelvic mobility. Impingement against cobalt-chromium acetabular bearings, however, can result in notching of titanium femoral stems. This study investigated the incidence of femoral stem notching associated with DM implants and sought to identify risk factors.

Article Synopsis
  • In 2008, guidelines were established for researching autophagy, which has since gained significant interest and new technologies, necessitating regular updates to monitoring methods across various organisms.
  • The new guidelines emphasize selecting appropriate techniques to evaluate autophagy while noting that no single method suits all situations; thus, a combination of methods is encouraged.
  • The document highlights that key proteins involved in autophagy also impact other cellular processes, suggesting genetic studies should focus on multiple autophagy-related genes to fully understand these pathways.

Background: Design thinking and human-centered design approaches have become increasingly common in health care literature, particularly in relation to health information technology (HIT), as a pathway toward the development of usable, diffusible tools and processes. There is a need in academic medical centers tasked with digital innovation for a comprehensive process model to guide development that incorporates current industry trends, including design thinking and lean and agile approaches to digital development.

Objective: This study aims to describe the foundations and phases of our model for user-centered HIT development.

Arch Sex Behav

August 2016

Center for Health, Identity, Behavior & Prevention Studies (CHIBPS), New York Univeristy, 726 Broadway, Suite 525, New York, NY, 10003, USA.

Young gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (YMSM) are at increased likelihood of experiencing depression and engaging in condomless sexual behaviors. The goal of the current investigation was to examine the relationship between negative mood and compulsive sexual behavior (CSB) and to assess for their individual and combined influence on sexual risk-taking behavior among a diverse sample of YMSM in New York City (the P18 Cohort Study). We first analyzed sociodemographic, depressive symptoms, CSB, and sexual risk-taking from the cross-sectional data of 509, 18- or 19-year-old YMSM recruited using non-probability sampling.
