Background: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has evolved as an alternative to surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR). In addition to full-sternotomy (FS), recent reports have shown successful minimally-invasive SAVR approaches, including mini-sternotomy (MS) and mini-thoracotomy (MT). This network-meta-analysis (NMA) seeks to provide an outcomes comparison based on these different modalities (MS, MT, TAVR) compared with FS as a reference arm for the management of aortic valve disease.

Long-term inorganic nitrate administration protects against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury in female rats.

Background: The favorable effects of nitrate against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI) have primarily focused on male rats and in short term. Here we determine the impact of long-term nitrate intervention on baseline cardiac function and the resistance to MIRI in female rats.

Methods: Female Wistar rats were randomly divided into untreated and nitrate-treated (100 mg/L sodium nitrate in drinking water for 9 months) groups (n = 14/group).

Background: Given that smartphones are widely used among reproductive-age people of all socioeconomic backgrounds, a smartphone application may be a useful supplement to routine prenatal care.

Objective: This study aimed to describe the implementation of a smartphone app that offers patient education, depression screening, social determinants of health screening, and care coordination as an adjunct to routine prenatal care at a federally qualified health center. We further sought to characterize app engagement and the association of app use with pregnancy outcomes.

Introduction: Several studies have linked increased risk of osteosarcoma with tall stature, high birthweight, and early puberty, although evidence is inconsistent. We used genetic risk scores (GRS) based on established genetic loci for these traits and evaluated associations between genetically inferred birthweight, height, and puberty timing with osteosarcoma.

Methods: Using genotype data from two genome-wide association studies, totaling 1039 cases and 2923 controls of European ancestry, association analyses were conducted using logistic regression for each study and meta-analyzed to estimate pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).

The impact of in-house pathology services on downstaging cervical cancer in Tanzania over an 18-year period.

Purpose: Reducing time between cancer screening, diagnosis, and initiation of treatment is best achieved when services are available in the same hospital. Yet, comprehensive cancer centers are typically unavailable in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where resources are limited and services scattered. This study explored the impact of establishing an in-house pathology laboratory at the largest public cancer hospital in Tanzania on the downstaging of cervical cancer.

Background: Substance use among adolescent girls is associated with numerous risk characteristics, including engaging in sexual risk behaviors, which can lead to HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) diagnoses. This is an important phenomenon to target as there is a significant race-gendered paradox that occurs when Black girls use and misuse drugs. When misuse occurs among this group, they are more likely to face harsher consequences and worse health outcomes than boys and other ethnic-minority girls.

Transspinal Focused Ultrasound Suppresses Spinal Reflexes in Healthy Rats.

Objectives: Low-intensity, focused ultrasound (FUS) is an emerging noninvasive neuromodulation approach, with improved spatial and temporal resolution and penetration depth compared to other noninvasive electrical stimulation strategies. FUS has been used to modulate circuits in the brain and the peripheral nervous system, however, its potential to modulate spinal circuits is unclear. In this study, we assessed the effect of trans-spinal FUS (tsFUS) on spinal reflexes in healthy rats.

Multiple Correspondence Analysis and HLA-Associations of Organ Involvement in a Large Cohort of African-American and European-American Patients with Sarcoidosis.

African American (AA) patients suffer greater morbidity and mortality. Using Multiple Correspondence Analysis, we identified seven clusters of organ involvement in European American (EA; n = 385) patients which were similar to those previously described in a Pan-European (GenPhenReSa) and a Spanish cohort (SARCOGEAS).

Targeting α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and their protein interactions in Alzheimer's disease drug development.

Background: Menopause is associated with higher risks of chronic kidney disease. We determined the effect of nitrate on ovariectomy-induced kidney dysfunction METHODS: Control, ovariectomized (OVX), control + nitrate, and OVX + nitrate female Wistar rats (n = 10/group); sodium nitrate (100 mg/L) administered in drinking water for 9 months. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and albumin excretion rate (AER) were calculated from serum and urine parameters.

General Anesthesia Versus Local Anesthesia in Patients Undergoing Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: An Updated Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review.

Objectives: For patients with aortic stenosis, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) offers a less invasive treatment modality than conventional surgical valve replacement. Although the surgery is performed traditionally under general anesthesia (GA), recent studies have described success with TAVR using local anesthesia (LA) and/or conscious sedation.
