Parkinson's disease (PD) is a debilitating condition resulting in motor and non-motor symptoms affecting approximately 10 million people worldwide. Currently, there are no pharmacological treatments that can cure the condition or effectively halt its progression. The focus of PD research has been primarily on the neurobiological basis and consequences of dopamine (DA) neuron degeneration given that the loss of DA neurons projecting from the substantia nigra to the dorsal striatum results in the development of cardinal PD motor symptoms.

Rationale And Objectives: To evaluate if incidental abdominopelvic calcified atherosclerosis (ACA) in patients under 50 years of age correlates with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. Most studies evaluating calcific atherosclerosis and associated increased risk of CVD have concentrated on middle age and older populations.
Materials And Methods: A retrospective review of 519 emergency department patients, aged 25-50 years, receiving computed tomography (CT) was performed and ACA correlated with lipid panels obtained via chart review.

Background: HIV testing is critical to HIV prevention and care. Infrequent HIV testing and late HIV diagnosis have been observed among young Black men who have sex with men and transwomen. Novel interventions to increase HIV testing rates among young Black men who have sex with men and transwomen are needed.

The gut microbiome likely plays a role in the etiology of multiple health conditions, especially those affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Little consensus exists as to the best, standard methods to collect fecal samples for future microbiome analysis. We evaluated three distinct populations (N = 132 participants) using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing data to investigate the reproducibility, stability, and accuracy of microbial profiles in fecal samples collected and stored via fecal occult blood test (FOBT) or Flinders Technology Associates (FTA) cards, fecal immunochemical tests (FIT) tubes, 70% and 95% ethanol, RNAlater, or with no solution.

Background: The relation of lifetime drinking trajectories to coronary heart disease is not well understood.
Methods: Cases hospitalized for a nonfatal acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and healthy population-based controls matched on age and sex completed a physical examination and an interview covering known AMI risk factors and a detailed lifetime drinking history. Distinct lifetime drinking trajectories based on ounces of ethanol consumed per decade between ages 10 and 59 years were derived and characterized according to lifetime drinking patterns associated with each.

Aberrant insulin and adipokine signaling has been implicated in cognitive decline associated with both type 2 diabetes mellitus and neurodegenerative diseases. We established methods that reliably measure insulin, adiponectin and leptin signaling, and their crosstalk, in thawed postmortem mid-frontal cortical tissue from cognitively normal older subjects with a short postmortem interval. Insulin-evoked insulin receptor (IR) activation increases activated, tyrosine-phosphorylated IRβ on tyrosine residues 960, 1150, and 1151, insulin receptor substrate-1 recruitment to IRβ and phosphorylated RAC-α-serine/threonine-protein kinase.

Female genital mutilation or cutting (FGM/C), an age-old tradition that is still widely practiced around the world, is gaining recognition as an important public health issue in the United States. Increasingly, because of migration, women and girls affected by FGM/C have become members of host communities where the practice is not culturally acceptable.According to recent conservative estimates, more than 513 000 immigrant women and girls living in the United States have undergone or are at risk for FGM/C, a significant increase from the 1990 estimate of 168 000.

Objective: Decreased nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability and hydrogen sulfide (HS) deficiency have been linked with the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Restoration of NO levels by nitrite have been associated with favorable metabolic effects in T2D. Moreover, HS can potentiate the effects of NO in the cardiovascular system.

While more than 90% of breast cancer patients in western countries survive for at least 5 years, the survival rate in Tanzania is less than 45% because of late stage at presentation. The aim of this study was to identify patient and health system factors related to early or late stages of a breast cancer diagnosis. The study was conducted at the Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and included interviews with 196 breast cancer patients diagnosed with early (stage I/II, n = 44) or late (stage III/IV, n = 152) stage who were referred to ORCI from January 2016 to August 2018.

Transendothelial migration (TEM) of leukocytes across the endothelium is critical for inflammation. In the endothelium, TEM requires the coordination of membrane movements and cytoskeletal interactions, including, prominently, recruitment of the lateral border recycling compartment (LBRC). The scaffold protein IQGAP1 was recently identified in a screen for LBRC-interacting proteins.

Recent studies have demonstrated that mobile sampling can improve the spatial granularity of land use regression (LUR) models. Mobile sampling campaigns deploying low-cost (<$300) air quality sensors could potentially offer an inexpensive and practical approach to measure and model air pollution concentration levels. In this study, we developed LUR models for street-level fine particulate matter (PM) concentration levels in Seoul, South Korea.

Purpose: We investigated the impact of screening rural patients on referral and management of cervical cancer in Tanzania.
Methods: After reviewing more than 10,000 medical records of patients with cervical cancer who visited Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI) from 2005 to 2014, 108 patients were from the rural communities of Bagamoyo and Chalinze. We abstracted demographic, clinical, and lifestyle factors and linked the data set to databases of all 1,151 patients who visited the Bagamoyo screening clinic from 2011 to 2014 and 1,273 patients who visited the Chalinze screening clinic from 2012 to 2014.

Spared corticospinal tract (CST) and proprioceptive afferent (PA) axons sprout after injury and contribute to rewiring spinal circuits, affecting motor recovery. Loss of CST connections post-injury results in corticospinal signal loss and associated reduction in spinal activity. We investigated the role of activity loss and injury on CST and PA sprouting.

Introduction: Previous qualitative reviews have summarized evidence of an association between menthol cigarette use and likelihood of smoking cessation. The objective of this meta-analysis was to provide a quantitative summary of effect sizes, their variability, and factors related to the variability in effect size for the association between menthol use and likelihood of smoking cessation.
Methods: We systematically searched Medline, PsycINFO, and Embase for prospective and cross-sectional studies of the association between menthol use and smoking cessation.

Imiquimod is a topical toll-like-receptor-7 agonist currently used for treating basal cell carcinoma. Recently, imiquimod has demonstrated tumor regression in melanoma and breast cancer skin metastases. However, the molecular perturbations induced by imiquimod in breast cancer metastases have not been previously characterized.

Sexual violence victimization is unacceptably common in the US, with nearly half of women and one in five men reporting lifetime sexual coercion and/or unwanted sexual contact; much violence occurs in campus settings. The majority of sexual violence prevention programs designed to date were not developed around the needs of urban commuter campus students. The present study explored qualitatively how these students conceptualize sexual violence and prevention.

Traditionally, there have been uniform antibiotic dosing guidelines for prophylaxis for clean-clean-contaminated surgery in both non-obese and obese adults. All other factors predisposing to surgical site infections (SSIs) being equal, over time, the preferred drug is cefazolin. The usual dose, given immediately pre-procedure, has been 1 g intravenously (IV) in non-penicillin-allergic patients, which has been highly effective, Recently, it has become common practice to use high-dose cefazolin; i.

External cephalic version is a technique that decreases the need for cesarean delivery in patients with breech presentation. Several techniques exist to increase the success of external cephalic version; however, there are no studies comparing different tocolytics in patients who also received neuraxial anesthesia. We, therefore, performed a review of 198 patients who presented for external cephalic version and compared their success rates based on the tocolytic medication utilized.
