Importance: Guidelines advise heart team assessment for all patients with aortic stenosis, with surgical aortic valve replacement recommended for patients younger than 65 years or with a life expectancy greater than 20 years. If bioprosthetic valves are selected, repeat procedures may be needed given limited durability of tissue valves; however, younger patients with aortic stenosis may have major comorbidities that can limit life expectancy, impacting decision-making.

Objective: To characterize patients younger than 65 years who received transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and compare their outcomes with patients aged 65 to 80 years.

Article Synopsis
  • Venous thrombosis (VT) is a serious vascular condition that can lead to decreased survival rates and frequent recurrences, primarily initiated by platelet and neutrophil accumulation at activated endothelial sites.
  • The study highlights a new drug, m-tirofiban, which does not activate the platelet receptor αIIbβ3, unlike its predecessor tirofiban, thus avoiding the risk of increased bleeding while effectively suppressing VT in mouse models.
  • These results suggest that m-tirofiban and similar compounds could be promising candidates for preventing VT in patients at high risk, balancing efficacy with safety.

Interactions between food and oral anticoagulants (OACs), particularly vitamin K antagonists such as warfarin, are widely recognized and may also be clinically relevant for direct OACs. Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interactions with food or herbs can lead to anticoagulation potentiation, increased risk of bleeding, or reduced drug efficacy, all compromising patient safety. We conducted a systematic search for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on PubMed for assessments of interactions between OACs and various ingestants.

J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg

September 2024

Department of Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery, Children's Hospital, CHU Nantes, Nantes, France; Division of Pediatric Cardiology, Nantes Université, Nantes, France.

Background: Single ventricle palliation may be performed in patients with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries due to hypoplasia of 1 ventricle or anatomic complexity rendering biventricular repair unfeasible. There have been only a few small studies of the outcomes of single ventricle palliation in the setting of congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries.

Methods: A multicenter, international, retrospective cohort study of patients with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries undergoing single ventricle palliation was conducted in 29 tertiary hospitals in 6 countries from 1990 to 2018.

Surg Pathol Clin

September 2024

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medicine, 1300 York Avenue, New York, NY 10065, USA. Electronic address:

With the advancement of tissue procurement techniques, in-depth knowledge of morphology is crucial for cytopathologists to diagnose neoplastic and nonneoplastic lung diseases optimally. Cytopathologists must also be well versed in immunohistochemistry/immunocytochemistry markers and their interpretation for an accurate diagnosis.

Small biopsies of lung are routinely obtained by many methods, including several that result in cytologic specimens. Because lung cancer is often diagnosed at a stage for which primary resection is not an option, it is critical that all diagnostic, predictive, and prognostic information be derived from such small biopsy specimens. As the number of available diagnostic and predictive markers expands, cytopathologists must familiarize themselves with current requirements for specimen acquisition, handling, results reporting, and molecular and other ancillary testing, all of which are reviewed here.
