Background: Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) intravascular ultrasound imaging can detect lipid-rich plaques (LRPs). LRPs are associated with acute coronary syndromes or myocardial infarction, which can result in revascularisation or cardiac death. In this study, we aimed to establish the relationship between LRPs detected by NIRS-intravascular ultrasound imaging at unstented sites and subsequent coronary events from new culprit lesions.

Indications and results for hybrid interventions in patients with congenital heart disease.

Arch Cardiovasc Dis

February 2020

Pediatric Cardiology Department, Children's Hospital of New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, 3959, Broadway BH2N, 10032 New York, NY, United States. Electronic address:

A hybrid therapy or procedure is a new treatment modality that develops by combining therapies from different subspecialties. In congenital heart disease, a growing number of such procedures have been described in recent decades, as a result of increasing collaboration between surgeons and interventionalists. The ideas behind these therapies include enabling the performance of procedures of different complexity in a less invasive manner, shortening procedural times, avoiding cardiopulmonary bypass, facilitating vascular access and decreasing the number of complications associated with more invasive approaches.

Background And Objectives: Patients undergoing cement fixation for hip arthroplasty are at increased risk of developing bone cement implantation syndrome (BCIS). We sought to determine: what is the occurrence of BCIS in patients with cancer after hip arthroplasty? What are the risk factors in patients with cancer for the development of this syndrome? What is the outcome for patients with cancer having BCIS?

Methods: We identified 374 patients with cancer who underwent cemented hip arthroplasty between 2010 and 2014. Patient characteristics, operative variables, and outcomes were collected.

Optimal Timing of Total Gastrectomy to Prevent Diffuse Gastric Cancer in Individuals With Pathogenic Variants in CDH1.

Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol

April 2020

Department of Medicine, Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases, New York Presbyterian Columbia University Medical Center, New York, New York; Department of Medicine, Division of General Medicine, New York Presbyterian Columbia University Medical Center, New York, New York; Columbia University Irving Cancer Center, New York, New York. Electronic address:

Background & Aims: Carriers of pathogenic variants in CDH1 have a high risk of hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC). Guidelines recommend prophylactic total gastrectomy (PTG) at age 20-30 years, although there is controversy over the optimal age. We developed a simulation model to analyze the effects of PTG at different ages on quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs), cancer mortality, and life expectancy.

Background: Deoxygenated sickle hemoglobin (HbS) polymerization drives the pathophysiology of sickle cell disease. Therefore, direct inhibition of HbS polymerization has potential to favorably modify disease outcomes. Voxelotor is an HbS polymerization inhibitor.

Introduction And Objectives: AKI is known to be associated with increased risk of mortality, however limited information is available on how AKI impacts healthcare costs and resource utilization in hospitalized patients with cirrhosis. Previous studies have had variable definitions of AKI, resulting in inconsistent reporting of the true impact of AKI in patients with cirrhosis.

Methods: Data from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) which contains data from 44 states and 4378 hospitals, accounting for over 7 million discharges were analyzed.

Intraoperative surgical prosthetic heart valve (SHV) choice is a key determinant of successful surgery and positive postoperative outcomes. Currently, many controversies exist around the sizing and labeling of SHVs rendering the comparison of different valves difficult. To explore solutions, an expert Valve Labelling Task Force was jointly initiated by the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS), The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS).

Wrist denervation is a safe and effective procedure for the treatment of chronic wrist pain that can delay or eliminate the need for salvage or anatomically distorting procedure, such as proximal row carpectomy. The traditionally more extensive wrist denervation has evolved to procedures requiring fewer incisions. Efficacy of this procedure is corroborated by multiple publications either as a stand-alone procedure or as an adjunct to other procedures.

Paraneoplastic syndromes are symptom complexes that cannot be readily explained by local or distant spread of the tumor. They can occur due to hormone production, autoimmunity or other biologically active products produced by the tumor, etc. Tumor induced osteomalacia is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome in which the manifestation is mainly musculoskeletal such as bone pain, fractures and muscle weakness as a consequence of elaboration of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) by the tumor.

Importance: Severe functional or secondary tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is associated with poor long-term outcomes in natural history studies as well as specific disease states. An understanding of the physiologic causes of the TR is lacking precluding a systematic approach to treatment.

Observations: The complex anatomic relationship between the tricuspid valve apparatus and structure of the right side of the heart lends insight into the functional changes seen with secondary TR.
