Background: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are a major driver of morbidity after combined liver and colorectal surgery for metastatic colorectal cancer. Available literature is inadequate to characterize risk factors and benchmarks for quality improvement.
Methods: Consecutive cases of simultaneous liver and colorectal surgery for colorectal adenocarcinoma from November 2013 through September 2022 were reviewed for SSIs per National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) and National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) criteria.

Summary Of Background Data: Although pseudoangina is most commonly caused by cervical disc herniation, several cases have been described where thoracic herniation produced symptoms of pseudoangina. If thoracic herniation can produce angina-like pain, then it is important to consider whether pathology of the thoracolumbar spine, in general, can trigger false pain syndromes distinct from pseudoangina.
Objective: We seek to provide the most comprehensive study regarding the diagnosis and treatment of spinal conditions causing false pain syndromes.

Abdominal pain is one of the most common presenting complaints to the emergency department, and appendicitis and diverticulitis are common causes. Intra-abdominal infections have historically been managed with admission to the hospital, antibiotics, and surgical interventions, and best-practice pathways are an important part of quality programs. Advances in diagnostics and management, supported with outcome data, are impacting care pathways.

Background: Increasing representation in clinical trials is a priority for the National Cancer Institute and Children's Oncology Group (COG). Our survey of COG-affiliated institutions revealed that many sites have insufficient processes and resources to enroll children whose parents use languages other than English (LOE). We describe reported barriers and facilitators to enrolling children in clinical trials when parents use LOE and propose opportunities for improvement.

Objective: Prior literature has found worse outcomes for female patients after endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm and mixed findings after thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) for thoracic aortic aneurysm. However, the influence of sex on outcomes after TEVAR for acute type B aortic dissection (aTBAD) is not fully elucidated.
Methods: We identified patients who underwent TEVAR for aTBAD (<30 days) in the Vascular Quality Initiative from 2014 to 2022.

The presence of adhesions and patent bypass grafts may create challenges for standard 14 mm outflow graft placement during left ventricular assist device implantation. We retrospectively describe our experience using a 10 mm Bioline Fusion graft (Getinge, Goteborg, Sweden) as the outflow graft in patients undergoing primary Heartmate 3 (Abbott, Abbott Park, IL) implantation. One hundred one patients underwent Heartmate 3 left ventricular assist device implantation, 80% via a thoracotomy approach, with the standard 14 mm outflow graft (78) or a 10 mm Bioline Fusion outflow graft (23).

Objective: Postoperative outcomes following carotid revascularization are understudied in Asian patients. We aimed to assess whether disease severity and postoperative outcomes following carotid revascularization differ between Asian and White patients, and whether this varies with Asian procedure density.
Methods: We analyzed the Vascular Quality Initiative Carotid Endarterectomy and Carotid Artery Stenting datasets from 2003 to 2021.

Ewing sarcoma (ES) is an uncommon mesenchymal neoplasm that typically develops as a bone mass, although up to 30% arise in extraskeletal sites. ES of the gastrointestinal (GI) and hepatobiliary tract is rare and may be misdiagnosed as other, more common neoplasms that occur in these sites. However, the correct classification of extraskeletal ES is important for timely clinical management and prognostication.

Quality is central to value-based care, and measurement is essential for assessing performance and understanding improvement over time. Both value-based care and methods for quality measurement are evolving. Infectious diseases (ID) has been less engaged than other specialties in quality measure development, and ID providers must seize the opportunity to engage with quality measure development and research.

The Milestones were initiated by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to provide a framework for monitoring a trainee's progression throughout residency/fellowship. The Milestones describe stepwise skill progression through six core domains of clinical competency: Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Professionalism, and Systems-based Practice. Since their introduction in 2013, several barriers to implementation have emerged.
