This statement provides guidance for diabetes care in detention facilities. It focuses on areas where the processes for delivery of care to people with diabetes in detention facilities may differ from those in the community, and key points are made at the end of each section. Areas of emphasis, which inform multiple aspects discussed in this statement, include 1) timely identification or diagnosis of diabetes treatment needs and continuity of care (at reception/intake, during transfers, and upon discharge), 2) nutrition and physical activity, 3) timely access to diabetes management tools (insulin, blood glucose monitoring, tracking data, current diabetes management technologies, etc.

Article Synopsis
  • The National Kidney Foundation held a workshop in March 2019 to explore a new treatment option—hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors (HIF-PHIs)—for anemia in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients.
  • Experts from various fields discussed current anemia treatments, the biology behind HIF, the pharmacology of HIF-PHIs, and reviewed phase 2 clinical trial results for these drugs in both dialysis and non-dialysis patients.
  • Recommendations from the workshop highlighted the need for further investigation into HIF-PHIs regarding their long-term safety, potential benefits, and the importance of educating patients and providers for implementation.

Single-cell DNA methylation sequencing reveals epigenetic alterations in mouse oocytes superovulated with different dosages of gonadotropins.

Clin Epigenetics

June 2020

Center for Reproductive Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Peking University Third Hospital, No. 49 North HuaYuan Road, Hai Dian District, Beijing, 100191, China.

Background: Epigenetic abnormalities caused by superovulation have recently attracted increasing attention. Superovulation with exogenous hormones may prevent oocytes from establishing an appropriate epigenetic state, and this effect may extend to the methylation programming in preimplantation embryos, as de novo DNA methylation is a function of developmental stage of follicles and oocyte size. Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and human menopausal gonadotropin (hMG) are common gonadotropins used for superovulation, and appropriate concentrations of these gonadotropins might be necessary.

Study Question: Could in vitro maturation (IVM) following transvaginal oocyte retrieval during gynaecological surgery (IVM-surgery) be an effective and safe strategy for fertility preservation?

Summary Answer: IVM-surgery on unstimulated ovaries is a novel option that can be considered for fertility preservation for women requiring gynaecological surgery, but more research is needed to identify appropriate patients who may benefit and to determine the cost-effectiveness of such an approach.

What Is Known Already: IVM followed by oocyte/embryo cryopreservation has been useful as a safe reproductive strategy for some infertile women.

Study Design, Size, Duration: This prospective cohort study comprised 158 consecutive women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) who underwent laparoscopy or hysteroscopy for other reasons and had concomitant transvaginal oocyte retrieval followed by IVM between 2014 and 2016.

Current perspectives on in vitro maturation and its effects on oocyte genetic and epigenetic profiles.

Sci China Life Sci

June 2018

Reproductive Medical Center, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Peking University Third Hospital, Beijing, 100191, China.

In vitro maturation (IVM), the maturation in culture of immature oocytes, has been used in clinic for more than 20 years. Although IVM has the specific advantages of low cost and minor side effects over controlled ovarian stimulation, the prevalence of IVM is less than 1% of routine in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer techniques in many reproductive centers. In this review, we searched the MEDLINE database for all full texts and/or abstract articles published in English with content related to oocyte IVM mainly between 2000 and 2016.

Dancers are highly susceptible to musculoskeletal injuries and frequently require interaction with medical professionals. While many dancers have a finely tuned awareness of their bodies, their knowledge of the fundamentals of human anatomy is not uniform. There is a paucity of literature on the benefits of human anatomy education in dancers, though it seems intuitive that there should be a relationship.

Thoracic myoepithelial tumors (MTs) are a rare group of tumors showing predominant or exclusive myoepithelial differentiation. They are poorly characterized from both a morphologic and genetic standpoint, in particular features that separate benign from malignant behavior. We examined the histologic and immunohistochemical features of 8 primary thoracic MTs and performed fluorescence in situ hybridization for EWSR1, FUS, PLAG1, and HMGA2, as well as several partner genes.
