Introduction As part of the Milestones Initiative of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), residents in neurosurgery are expected to participate in either clinical research or basic science research. Therefore, each neurosurgical training program must offer the support and opportunity to achieve this goal. In 2012, a structured effort to promote a resident culture of research was introduced into the authors' neurosurgery residency training curriculum.

Diabetic foot infections (DFIs) are a common and costly complication of diabetes. Soft tissue and bone infections in DFIs frequently lead to amputation and/or sepsis which can be costly for both the patient and the healthcare system. is the most commonly identified causative agent in DFIs, and people with diabetes may have an increased risk of infection with methicillin-resistant (MRSA).

Aflatoxins, a family of fungal secondary metabolites, are toxic and carcinogenic compounds that pose an enormous threat to global food safety and agricultural sustainability. Specifically agricultural products in African, Southeast Asian and hot and humid regions of American countries suffer most damage from aflatoxin producing molds due to the ideal climate conditions promoting their growth. Our recent studies suggest that (Vg), an estuarine bacterium non-pathogenic to plants and humans, can significantly inhibit aflatoxin biosynthesis in the producers.

Plantar vein thrombosis (PVT) is an atypical cause of plantar heel pain and is seldom reported in the literature. We present a unique, rare case report of a patient exhibiting plantar heel and medial arch pain caused by thrombosis in the plantar medial branch of the posterior tibial vein. The diagnosis was made by means of magnetic resonance imaging, showing lobulated hypointensity in the medial plantar vein, consistent with a PVT.

This review and meta-analysis aims to assess the prognostic value of the Laboratory Risk Indicator for Necrotizing Fasciitis (LRINEC) score for detecting necrotizing fasciitis in the extremities. The LRINEC score has been validated in multiple studies as a clinical tool for differentiating necrotizing fasciitis from non-necrotizing infections however many studies do not specify the location of infection. As the prevalence of diabetes and diabetic foot infections continues to rise, the utility of LRINEC scores in these populations becomes of increased importance.

Studying the neuronal mechanisms that govern the cortical adaptations to acute stress is critical for understanding the development of neuropsychiatric diseases. Homeostatic plasticity stabilizes the neural activity in which a previous synaptic event drives subsequent synaptic plasticity. In this study, we evaluated the effect of acute stress induced with the socially evaluated cold pressor test (SECPT) on cortical metaplasticity in humans using a non-invasive brain stimulation protocol.

Aims: The prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus among adolescents in the United States continues to rise, following the trajectory of the obesity epidemic which posits not only a substantial health burden to our society, but also a significant threat to the wellbeing of America's youth. While a number of studies have explored the perception of the risk for developing diabetes in the adult population in the United States, this data is minimal for the adolescent population. In this study, we examined the self-perceived risk of diabetes among adolescents with overweight/obesity.

Female medical students seem to experience higher level of perceived stress. Moreover, there is a lack of research examining perceived stress in students enrolled in different medical programs. We analyzed the association between temperament traits, optimism, self-esteem, and perceived stress of students pursuing a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree and students pursuing a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree.

Hallux limitus is among the most common arthritides of the foot and ankle, with increasing incidence in the aging population. Despite its prevalence and disease burden, treatment of the condition remains poorly understood. Many patients will fail initial conservative management, whereas controversy exists surrounding indications for and outcomes of surgery.

Venous stasis ulcers represent the majority of lower-extremity ulcers and place a considerable financial burden on the American health care system. Current standard of care therapies remain sub-optimal with 50% of venous stasis ulcers remaining unhealed after 4 months. Sixteen consecutive wounds were enrolled across 8 participants at a single center and underwent pH-driven therapy in addition to standard care as dictated by physicians.

Background: High-risk patients with advanced peripheral artery disease (PAD), including critical limb ischemia (CLI), are often excluded from peripheral endovascular device intervention clinical trials, leading to difficulty in translating trial results into real-world practice. There is a need for prospectively assessed studies to evaluate peripheral endovascular device intervention outcomes in CLI patients.
Methods: LIBERTY 360 is a prospective, observational, multi-center study designed to evaluate the procedural and long-term clinical outcomes of peripheral endovascular device intervention in real-world patients with symptomatic lower-extremity PAD.
