Marine Science Program, Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering Division (BESE), King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Thuwal, 23955-6900, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Red Sea elasmobranch populations are facing alarming declines. Effective conservation efforts require management strategies informed by extensive datasets and by developing an understanding of distribution patterns within the basin, which is currently lacking. This study introduces CERSE (Central and Eastern Red Sea Elasmobranchs), a comprehensive compilation of elasmobranch observations in the central and eastern Red Sea basin following the route of the Red Sea Decade Expedition.

This paper is an official position statement of the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) and updates the 2017 AGS position statement, Making Medical Treatment Decisions for Unbefriended Older Adults. In this updated position statement, the term "unbefriended" is replaced by "unrepresented" as a term that is more value-neutral, more accurately describes the circumstance in which a person without medical decision-making capacity does not have recognized surrogate representation, and better aligns with increasingly preferred terminology as reflected in recent medical literature. We define unrepresented older adults as those who (1) lack decisional capacity to provide informed consent for a particular medical treatment, (2) have not executed an advance directive that addresses the medical treatment at hand and lack capacity to do so, and (3) lack representation from a surrogate decision-maker (i.

Article Synopsis
  • Glioblastoma patients typically have a poor prognosis even after standard treatments, prompting research into new combinations of therapy.
  • The study evaluated the effectiveness of veliparib combined with temozolomide for glioblastoma patients with MGMT promoter hypermethylation, hoping to enhance treatment outcomes.
  • Results showed a slight improvement in median overall survival for the veliparib group compared to the placebo, but the difference wasn't significant enough to meet efficacy goals, though the combination treatment was generally well tolerated.

Background: Respiratory syncytial virus vaccines first recommended for use during 2023 were efficacious against lower respiratory tract disease in clinical trials. Limited real-world data regarding respiratory syncytial virus vaccine effectiveness are available. To inform vaccine policy and address gaps in evidence from the clinical trials, we aimed to assess the effectiveness against respiratory syncytial virus-associated hospitalisations and emergency department encounters among adults aged at least 60 years.

Voxelotor is a small molecule that reduces the polymerization of sickle hemoglobin by increasing its affinity for oxygen. In patients with sickle cell anemia, it has been postulated that increasing hemoglobin-oxygen affinity could limit oxygen offloading from hemoglobin, causing an increase in cerebral metabolic stress. To investigate this hypothetical concern, we used multimodal brain imaging to define the effects of voxelotor on cerebral blood flow and oxygen extraction.

Centre for Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Population and Global Health, The University of Melbourne, Melbourne, VIC, Australia.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between hormonal contraceptive use and breast cancer risk in both unaffected women and mutation carriers.
  • Out of the participants, it was found that hormonal contraceptive use was linked to a higher breast cancer risk in mutation carriers, particularly with longer duration of use.
  • The findings suggest that decisions regarding hormonal contraceptive use for women with genetic mutations should consider individual risk factors and benefits.

  • Pregnant individuals are at a higher risk for severe COVID-19, leading to current guidelines recommending updated vaccinations for everyone aged 6 months and older, regardless of pregnancy status.
  • A study evaluated COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness among pregnant people aged 18 to 45 from June 2022 to August 2023, finding that vaccine effectiveness during pregnancy was 52%, compared to 28% when vaccination was received less than 6 months before pregnancy and only 6% when received more than 6 months prior.
  • The findings suggest that pregnant individuals should remain up-to-date with recommended COVID-19 vaccinations for better protection against the virus.

  • The Delphi consensus study, conducted by IHPBA-APHPBA, aimed to create global practice guidelines for managing gallbladder cancer (GBC).
  • Experts from 17 countries participated in a four-round consensus process, where 68 clinical questions were posed and a consensus was reached if more than 75% of participants agreed.
  • The study achieved consensus on 92.6% of the questions, covering important aspects of GBC management, but noted that further research is needed on unresolved issues such as the definitions of borderline resectable and locally advanced GBC.

Importance: Few studies have investigated whether the associations between pregnancy-related factors and breast cancer (BC) risk differ by underlying BC susceptibility. Evidence regarding variation in BC risk is critical to understanding BC causes and for developing effective risk-based screening guidelines.

Objective: To examine the association between pregnancy-related factors and BC risk, including modification by a of BC where scores are based on age and BC family history.

  • The term atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) originated in the 1970s to differentiate between familial/sporadic cases and typical epidemic cases associated with Shiga toxin.
  • Over time, aHUS has become a broad term for various diseases that don't relate to Shiga toxin, complicating the definition and treatment strategies due to its diverse causes.
  • A group of experts used a consensus-building method called the Delphi approach to discuss and clarify the terminology and issues surrounding aHUS in light of advancements in medical science and targeted therapies.

Institute of Metabolism and Cell Death, Helmholtz Center Munich, Germany. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Ferroptosis is a key form of cell death linked to various diseases, characterized by excessive peroxidation of fatty acids in cell membranes, which causes the cell to rupture.
  • This process is influenced by iron and redox balance within cells but can also be targeted for pharmacological treatments, making ferroptosis-related proteins potential candidates for new therapies.
  • A research consortium in Germany, along with leading experts, aims to review the mechanisms, significance, and methodologies related to ferroptosis to promote further research and potential new treatments for diseases affected by this process.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death among women and its incidence has been increasing recently, particularly among younger women. Across major professional society guidelines, dyslipidemia management remains a central tenet for atherosclerotic CVD prevention for both women and men. Despite this, women, particularly young women, who are candidates for statin therapy are less likely to be treated and less likely to achieve their recommended therapeutic objectives for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels.

Pediatric COVID-19 vaccination is effective in preventing COVID-19-related hospitalization, but duration of protection of the original monovalent vaccine during SARS-CoV-2 Omicron predominance merits evaluation, particularly given low coverage with updated COVID-19 vaccines. During December 19, 2021-October 29, 2023, the Overcoming COVID-19 Network evaluated vaccine effectiveness (VE) of ≥2 original monovalent COVID-19 mRNA vaccine doses against COVID-19-related hospitalization and critical illness among U.S.

Background: ISCHEMIA (International Study of Comparative Health Effectiveness With Medical and Invasive Approaches) did not find an overall reduction in cardiovascular events with an initial invasive versus conservative management strategy in chronic coronary disease; however, there were conservative strategy participants who underwent invasive coronary angiography early postrandomization (within 6 months). Identifying factors associated with angiography in conservative strategy participants will inform clinical decision-making in patients with chronic coronary disease.

Methods: Factors independently associated with angiography performed within 6 months of randomization were identified using Fine and Gray proportional subdistribution hazard models, including demographics, region of randomization, medical history, risk factor control, symptoms, ischemia severity, coronary anatomy based on protocol-mandated coronary computed tomography angiography, and medication use.
