Background And Aims: Bendopnea is a symptom found in patients with heart failure (HF) defined as shortness of breath when bending forward. The present study examined the correlation between bendopnea with other cardiac symptoms, echocardiographic findings, and cardiac function parameters.

Methods: This was a single-center prospective cross-sectional study of patients diagnosed with systolic HF.

Improving cefazolin administration for surgical prophylaxis in reported penicillin allergy: A retrospective study of a health system intervention.

Background: Cefazolin is the most common first-line antibiotic to prevent surgical-site infections. Patients with penicillin allergy labels often receive alternative antibiotics, which is associated with increased rates of surgical-site infections, multi-drug-resistant infections, and cost.

Objective: We sought to determine whether a hospital-wide guideline recommending first-line surgical prophylaxis in patients with penicillin allergy labels can increase the use of cefazolin without compromising safety.

Assessing Links Between Alcohol Exposure and Firearm Violence: A Scoping Review Update.

Background: Firearm violence remains a leading cause of death and injury in the United States. Prior research supports that alcohol exposures, including individual-level alcohol use and alcohol control policies, are modifiable risk factors for firearm violence, yet additional research is needed to support prevention efforts.

Objectives: This scoping review aims to update a prior 2016 systematic review on the links between alcohol exposure and firearm violence to examine whether current studies indicate causal links between alcohol use, alcohol interventions, and firearm violence-related outcomes.

Characterization of bleeding in thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura in the precaplacizumab era: a retrospective nationwide analysis.

Background: The addition of caplacizumab to immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (iTTP) treatment options has led to a renewed interest in characterizing the epidemiology and risk factors for bleeding in iTTP. Limited data exist on the bleeding risk in iTTP due to systemic underreporting in earlier cohorts.

Objectives: To describe the incidence, patterns, and predictors of bleeding in hospitalized iTTP patients independent of caplacizumab use.

A Topical Formulation Containing Ferment for Managing Barrier Damage After Mild-Moderate Skin Disruption from Cosmetic Dermatologic Procedures.

Objective: The primary objective of these studies was to evaluate the potential of a serum containing Macrocystis pyrifera ferment (MPF-Serum) to both strengthen the barrier of intact skin and enhance barrier recovery after a non-ablative laser procedure or glycolic acid chemical peel.

Methods: Two whole-face clinical trials and three split-face, randomized, controlled clinical trials were conducted in women aged 31 to 65 years. The effect of MPF-Serum on barrier integrity and strength was assessed by transepidermal water loss measurement before and after controlled tape-stripping experiments and in-clinic 70% glycolic acid peel and non-ablative laser procedures.

Frugivore Traits Predict Plant-Frugivore Interactions Using Generalized Joint Attribute Modeling.

Under an adaptive hypothesis, the reciprocal influence between mutualistic plants and frugivores is expected to result in suites of matching frugivore and plant traits that structure fruit consumption. Recent work has suggested fruit traits can represent adaptations to broad groups of functionally similar frugivores, but the role of frugivore traits and within-species variation in structuring fruit consumption is less understood. To address these knowledge gaps, we assess the presence of reciprocal trait matching for the mutualistic ecological network comprising of bats that feed on and disperse seeds.

Consensus Recommendations for the Management of Neurosarcoidosis: A Delphi Survey of Experts Across the United States.

Background And Objectives: Neurosarcoidosis poses a diagnostic and management challenge due to its rarity, phenotypic variability, and lack of randomized controlled studies to guide treatment selection. Recommendations for management based on expert opinion are useful in clinical practice and provide a framework for designing prospective studies.

Methods: In this Delphi survey study, specialists with experience in managing patients with neurosarcoidosis were invited to anonymously complete 2 surveys about key elements of evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and long-term management of neurosarcoidosis.

Purpose: This study employed the R software bibliometrix and the visualization tools CiteSpace and VOSviewer to conduct a bibliometric analysis of literature on lung cancer spread through air spaces (STAS) published since 2015.

Methods: On September 1, 2024, a computer-based search was performed in the Web of Science (WOS) Core Collection dataset for literature on lung cancer STAS published between January 1, 2015, and August 31, 2024. VOSviewer was used to visually analyze countries, institutions, authors, co-cited authors, and keywords, while CiteSpace was utilized to analyze institutional centrality, references, keyword bursts, and co-citation literature.

This paper introduces the Morphologically-Analyzed and Syntactically-Annotated Quran (MASAQ) dataset, a comprehensive resource designed to address the scarcity of annotated Quranic Arabic corpora and facilitate the development of advanced Natural Language Processing (NLP) models. The Quran, being a cornerstone of classical Arabic, presents unique challenges for NLP due to its sacred nature and complex linguistic features. MASAQ provides a detailed syntactic and morphological annotation of the entire Quranic text, utilizing a rigorously verified text from Tanzil.

The Impact of Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension on Cardiovascular Disease Risk Among UK Women: An Obesity-Adjusted Analysis.

Introduction: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is known to elevate cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, but the extent to which obesity and IIH-specific factors contribute to this risk is not well understood. WE aim to separate the effects of obesity from IIH-specific factors on the risk of stroke and CVD, building on previous findings that indicate a two-fold increase in cardiovascular events in women with IIH compared to BMI-matched controls.

Methods: An obesity-adjusted risk analysis was conducted using Indirect Standardization based on data from a cohort study by Adderley et al.

Considerations and recommendations for collaborative research networks in epidemiology: Lessons learned from the diabetes LEAD Network.

Multi-site and multi-organizational teams are increasingly common in epidemiologic research; however, there is a lack of standards or best practices for achieving success in collaborative research networks in epidemiology. We summarize our experiences and lessons learned from the Diabetes Location, Environmental Attributes, and Disparities (LEAD) Network, a collaborative agreement between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and research teams at Drexel University, New York University, Johns Hopkins University and Geisinger, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. We present a roadmap for success in collaborative epidemiologic research, with recommendations focused on the following areas to maximize efficiency and success in collaborative research agreements: 1) operational and administrative considerations; 2) data access and sharing of sensitive data; 3) aligning network research aims; 4) harmonization of methods and measures; and 5) dissemination of findings.

Twist-free ultralight two-photon fiberscope enabling neuroimaging on freely rotating/walking mice.

Lightweight and head-mountable scanning nonlinear fiberscope technologies offer an exciting opportunity for enabling mechanistic exploration of ensemble neural activities with subcellular resolution on freely behaving rodents. The tether of the fiberscope, consisting of an optical fiber and scanner drive wires, however, restricts the mouse's movement and consequently precludes free rotation and limits the freedom of walking. Here we present the first twist-free two-photon fiberscope technology for enabling neuroimaging on freely rotating/walking mice.

Paraneoplastic Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia Secondary to a Gastric Duplication Cyst in a 15-Month-Old Girl: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Gastric duplication is a rare congenital disorder of the alimentary tract, and anemia is a rare presenting clinical sign of gastric duplication cysts (GDC). There are two reported cases of autoimmune hemolytic anemia as a paraneoplastic presentation of gastric duplication in the adult population, but there have not yet been any reported cases of this in childhood. We report the first case in the pediatric patient population: the case of GDC presenting as autoimmune hemolytic anemia in a 15-month-old girl.

Increasing Authenticity of the Laboratory through the MICRO Project: Analysis of Analytical Chemistry Laboratory Experiments for Their Level of Inquiry.

Inquiry-based laboratory experiments, in comparison to traditional "cookbook" style laboratory experiments, more accurately model the work scientists do and engage students in the skills they use. Students who participate in inquiry-based laboratory experiments engage in science practices and develop skills such as critical thinking and argumentation. Despite the abundance of literature surrounding the benefits of inquiry-based laboratory learning approaches, adoption of these instructional approaches has been slow.

Assessing the pre-intervention burden of RSV infections across various severity levels and risk groups is crucial, as it provides a baseline for evaluating the impact of these products.

Methods: We obtained monthly time series data on hospitalizations, intensive care unit (ICU) admissions, and deaths by age group, ZIP code, and cause for New York state from 2005 to 2019.
