Case report: Resolution of VIPoma-related symptoms with peptide receptor radionuclide therapy.

Peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) is used for the management of neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) not responsive to somatostatin analogs. In this case series, we report two patients with pancreatic vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP)-secreting NETs (VIPomas) not responsive to any other therapies who achieved symptomatic control and a significant decrease in serum VIP levels with PRRT during their hospital stay. Two patients with VIPomas were admitted to the hospital with multiple prior hospital admissions after going through multiple lines of therapy.

Materials And Methods: We conducted a systematic literature review to identify articles evaluating PPRL methods from January 1, 2013 to June 15, 2023. Eligible studies included original research reporting quantitative metrics such as precision and recall in health-related data sources.

The safety of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal remedies, particularly when used with modern medications or in non-traditional dosages, requires careful consideration. We present a case of a 62-year-old male with pre-existing cardiovascular risk factors who developed tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy (TIC) potentially linked to prolonged use of the TCM supplement "Tan Ke Jing." The supplement contains licorice root, caffeine, and apricot kernel, which have known cardiovascular effects.

Backbone Hydration of -Helical Peptides: Hydrogen-Bonding and Surface Hydrophobicity/Hydrophilicity.

The stability of proteins and small peptides depends on the way they interact with the surrounding water molecules. For small peptides, such as -helical polyalanine (polyALA), water molecules can weaken the intramolecular hydrogen-bonds (HB) formed between the peptide backbone O and NH groups which are responsible for the -helix structure. Here, we perform molecular dynamics simulations to study the hydration of polyALA, polyserine (polySER), and other homopolymer peptide -helices at different temperatures and pressures.

Background: Recent studies demonstrate a link between corticosteroid injection and surgical complications when procedures occur shortly after steroid administration. These publications focus on single procedures like carpal tunnel release. This study seeks to demonstrate how surgical site infection risk changes across thirteen common elective hand procedures when steroid injection is performed contemporaneously.

ENHANCING TRANSCRANIAL FOCUSED ULTRASOUND TREATMENT PLANNING WITH SYNTHETIC CT FROM ULTRA-SHORT ECHO TIME (UTE) MRI: A MULTI-TASK DEEP LEARNING APPROACH.

Utilizing a multi-task deep learning framework, this study generated synthetic CT (sCT) images from a limited dataset of Ultrashort echo time (UTE) MRI for transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) planning. A 3D Transformer U-Net was employed to produce sCT images that closely replicated actual CT scans, demonstrated by an average Dice coefficient of 0.868 for morphological accuracy.

Travel Burden of Radiation Therapy in the Philippines.

Purpose: Travel burden negatively impacts the stage at diagnosis, treatment, outcome, and quality of life among patients with cancer. Travel burden-quantified as distance, time, and cost of travel-is magnified in low- and middle-income countries like the Philippines, where radiation therapy (RT) resources are lacking and are inequitably distributed.

Methods And Materials: We compared Philippine Radiation Oncology Society data and the population census to determine the distribution and density of RT facilities across the country's 17 regions.

Association between Teacher Depressive Symptoms and Rural Children's Cognitive Outcomes: Indirect Relations with Early Care and Education Quality.

A subset of extant data (=423) from the Family Life Project, a population-based study of Black and White families with low incomes from rural communities, were used to test for associations between teacher depressive symptoms and children's cognitive outcomes at 36 months. A second aim tested whether early care and education (ECE) quality mediated such relations. Results indicated that although the associations were in the expected negative direction, teacher depressive symptoms were not directly significantly related to any child cognitive outcome.

Cryopreservation of brain cell structure: a review.

Cryopreservation, the preservation of tissues at subzero temperatures, is a mainstay of brain banking that allows for the storage of brain tissue without the use of chemical fixatives. This is particularly important for molecular studies that are incompatible with tissue fixation. However, brain tissue is vulnerable to various forms of damage during the cryopreservation process, in particular due to the phase transition of water from a liquid to a solid state with the formation of ice crystals, which can disrupt cellular morphology.

The 2022 ADEA Climate Study in U.S. and Canadian Dental Schools and Allied Dental Programs: Methodological Considerations.

Objectives: From January 2020 to the end of August 2020, preliminary research gathered data about the need for and the feasibility of an ADEA-led joint Climate Study of dental schools and allied dental programs in the United States and Canada. Informed by these findings, the first ever ADEA-led joint Climate Study took place in 2022. The objectives of this manuscript were to describe the timeline of this climate study and provide information about its methodology, specifically about (a) who participated in this research, (b) what was assessed, (c) how the study was conducted, and (d) how the results were communicated.

Access to CARe: A Narrative of Real-World Medical Decision-Making to Access Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T-Cell Therapy in Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults.

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy is a potentially life-saving treatment for children with relapsed/refractory B-cell hematologic malignancies, and remains an important investigational therapy for other childhood cancers. Yet, access to this class of therapies remains suboptimal through both commercial use and clinical trials, especially in children, adolescents, and young adults. Using a series of case-based discussions, we outline guidance on real-world medical decision-making, and offer potential solutions to enhancing access to CAR T-cell therapy as a treatment modality.

The Call to Increase Adoption of Family-Based Interventions in Global Mental Health Programming.

Family-based intervention approaches hold tremendous promise for improving mental health in scalable and relevant ways that address social determinants of health, yet family-focused prevention and care interventions are underused in global mental health. This article provides a brief overview of the evidence and types of programs. It then outlines five future directions for family-focused global mental health interventions: integrating implementation science into family-focused programs, expanding research on family-focused work to other populations and different modalities, encouraging transdisciplinary learning from other fields, understanding what works for whom and where, and disseminating family interventions grounded in locally derived theoretical frameworks.

This study examined if considerably different caregiving experiences in infancy influence socio-emotional development later in childhood. We included children aged 6-9 years who were, immediately after birth, placed in quality state-run institutions (N = 24) or quality state-run foster care with one family (N = 23). All children have lived in stable families since their adoption before 15 months of age.

Probing the Signal Transduction Mechanism of the Light-Activated Adenylate Cyclase OaPAC Using Unnatural Amino Acid Mutagenesis.

OaPAC, the photoactivated adenylyl cyclase from , is composed of a blue light using FAD (BLUF) domain fused to an adenylate cyclase (AC) domain. Since both the BLUF and AC domains are part of the same protein, OaPAC is a model for understanding how the ultrafast modulation of the chromophore binding pocket caused by photoexcitation results in the activation of the output domain on the μs-s time scale. In the present work, we use unnatural amino acid mutagenesis to identify specific sites in the protein that are involved in transducing the signal from the FAD binding site to the ATP binding site.

Acute eculizumab treatment in a pediatric patient with AQP4-IgG+ NMOSD.

Background: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a rare autoimmune disorder that occurs in children and adults.

Case: We report a case of a 10-year-old female with AQP4+ NMOSD who presented with paraparesis from longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM) from C2 to the conus medullaris. The patient showed gradual improvement in strength and sensation with solumedrol and plasma exchange therapy.

Know Your ABCs: Discovery, Differentiation, and Targeting of T-Bet+ B Cells.

Since their first description in 2008, T-bet+ B cells have emerged as a clinically important B cell subset. Now commonly known as ABCs (Age-associated B Cells), they are uniquely characterized by their expression of the transcription factor T-bet. Indeed, this singular factor defines this B cell subset.

Putting seedlings on the map: Trade-offs in demographic rates between ontogenetic size classes in five tropical forests.

All species must partition resources among the processes that underly growth, survival, and reproduction. The resulting demographic trade-offs constrain the range of viable life-history strategies and are hypothesized to promote local coexistence. Tropical forests pose ideal systems to study demographic trade-offs as they have a high diversity of coexisting tree species whose life-history strategies tend to align along two orthogonal axes of variation: a growth-survival trade-off that separates species with fast growth from species with high survival and a stature-recruitment trade-off that separates species that achieve large stature from species with high recruitment.

Antibody-drug conjugates in urothelial carcinoma: current status and future.

Purpose Of Review: Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) are quickly becoming frontline standard of care in many tumor types, including urothelial carcinoma. This review summarizes recent clinical investigations into the use of ADCs targeting nectin-4, trophoblast cell surface antigen-2 (Trop-2), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER-2), and other antigens in urothelial carcinoma.

Recent Findings: This review covers efficacy and toxicity data of ADCs alone and in combination with immunotherapy; mechanisms of resistance; and preclinical studies that provide biological basis for clinical approaches.
