Background: Road traffic crashes (RTCs) are a global health burden, particularly in India, where response times for first responders can be prolonged. Prior to enactment of a Good Samaritan Law (GSL) in 2016, involved bystanders could face criminal and financial liability for assisting at an RTC site. This study evaluates the impact of GSL on bystander RTC attitudes, awareness, and experiences in India, comparing outcomes pre- and post-GSL implementation across metropolitan cities (MCs) and nonmetropolitan cities (NMCs).

Navigating Language Barriers in Linguistically Complex Settings: A Qualitative Analysis of Paradoxes in Nurse Communication in Acute Care Units in Saudi Arabia.

This qualitative study explores how nurses managed communication challenges in linguistically complex Saudi Arabian acute care hospitals. A secondary analysis of transcripts from interviews with 21 nurses in Riyadh revealed the use of informal and creative strategies, including translation apps, non-verbal signaling, family interpreters, and an ad hoc system of sharing translation work among team members. In the absence of formal interpretation services, these strategies were essential but paradoxical, contributing to delays, errors, and team tension.

Betacoronavirus internal protein: role in immune evasion and viral pathogenesis.

Betacoronaviruses express a small internal (I) protein that is encoded by the same subgenomic RNA (sgRNA) as the nucleocapsid (N) protein. Translation of the +1 reading frame of the N sgRNA through leaky ribosomal scanning leads to expression of the I protein. The I protein is an accessory protein reported to evade host innate immune responses during coronavirus infection.

The aim of this study was to document the characteristics and treatment patterns among patients diagnosed with EPP or XLP in general real-world settings in the United States.

Assessment of fit of item response theory models: A critical review of the status quo and some future directions.

This paper provides a literature review of assessment of fit of item response theory models. Various types of fit procedures for item response theory models are reviewed, with a focus on their advantages and disadvantages. Real data examples are used to demonstrate some of the fit procedures.

Surgical Obliteration of a Filum Terminale Arteriovenous Fistula Following Aborted Endovascular Embolization: Illustrative Case Report and Literature Review.

Arteriovenous fistulas of the filum terminale are rare vascular malformations that predominantly affect males and can present with various neurological symptoms. In this study, we indexed previously published cases of filum terminale arteriovenous fistulas demonstrating that endovascular and microsurgical management are both proven to be appropriate and successful treatment modalities with low complication rates. Endovascular treatment is far less invasive; however, it is associated with higher failure rates, which need to be managed surgically.

Atraumatic Fracture of Newer Generation Ceramic Head Three Days Post-op: A Case Report.

A 73-year-old female experienced an atraumatic fracture of a BIOLOX delta ceramic femoral head following uncomplicated right total hip arthroplasty using a ceramic-on-polyethylene bearing. The fracture occurred post-operatively, as revealed by radiography after the patient reported a clunking sensation and leg shortening. Revision surgery involved replacing the fractured head and liner with careful removal of ceramic debris.

Cytomegalovirus is a promising vaccine vector; however, mechanisms promoting CD4 T cell responses to challenge, by CMV as a vector, are unknown. The ability of MCMV to prolong immunity generated by short-lived malaria vaccine was tested. MCMV provided non-specific protection to challenge with and increased interleukin-12 (IL-12) and CD8α dendritic cell (DC) numbers through prolonged MCMV-dependent interferon gamma (IFN-γ) production.

Brief Report: Precision Language and Deletion of the "S" Word.

Introduction: In 2021, the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) published the IASLC Language Guide as guidance on preferred language and phrasing in oral and written communications, including presentations at conferences. This study analyzed presentations from the 2022 IASLC World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC) one year after implementation of the Language Guide to identify adoption rates of non-stigmatizing language and to determine correlations with presenter characteristics.

Methods: We downloaded 522 slide presentations from the IASLC WCLC 2022 conference attendee portal.

Introduction: The objective of this study is to determine if cardiac damage based on hospital discharge codes is associated with in-hospital outcomes in patients with aortic stenosis (AS).

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of hospital admissions between 2016 and 2021 with a diagnosis of AS in the National Inpatient Sample (NIS). The cardiac damage stages 0-4 were determined based on hospital discharge codes.

Neuropsychiatric disease encompasses a range of conditions resulting from various dysfunctions within the nervous system, manifesting in diverse neurological impairments. These disorders, including depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, and Alzheimer's disease, impose significant economic and psychological burdens on both individuals and society overall. Recent clinical and preclinical studies have highlighted the potential therapy of dexmedetomidine (Dex), a highly selective α2 adrenergic receptor agonist, not only as an effective sedation but also as a neuroprotective agent.

Revisiting the Discrepancy between Experimental and Theoretical Predictions of the Adiabaticity of Ti + CHOH.

We revisit the naked transition metal cation (Ti) and methanol reaction and go beyond the standard Landau-Zener (LZ) picture when modeling the intersystem crossing (ISC) rate between the lowest doublet and quartet states. We use both (i) unconstrained Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD) calculations with an approximate two-state method to estimate population transfer between spin diabats and (ii) constrained dynamics to explore energetically accessible portions of the - 1 crossing seam, where is the total number of internal degrees of freedom. Whereas previous LZ calculations (that necessarily relied on the Condon approximation to be valid) fell short and predicted much slower crossing probabilities than shown in experiment, we show that ISC can occur rapidly because the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) between the doublet and quartet surfaces can vary by 2 orders of magnitude (depending on where in the seam the crossing occurs during dynamics) and the crossing region is revisited multiple times during a dynamics run of a few hundred femtoseconds.

Background And Objective: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) refers to self-reported difficulties in concentration, memory, and decision-making. Since SCD is based on subjective experiences, no specific medical test can definitively confirm its presence, making early detection challenging. Thus, it is advantageous to develop an AI model to capitalize on self-reported health complications, personality traits, and sociodemographic factors for early detection of SCD.

The development and validation of a patient questionnaire tool for the assessment of patient-reported experiences with endometriosis ultrasound.

Objective: Endometriosis ultrasound is an accurate, cost-effective, and non-invasive diagnostic tool that can help improve the diagnostic delay that patients with endometriosis experience. As an emerging diagnostic method, the perspectives of patients undergoing endometriosis ultrasound remain unexplored. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop and validate an assessment tool that evaluates patient-reported experiences with endometriosis ultrasound as a decision-making tool.

Synthetic illicit drugs, such as nitazenes and fentanyls, are becoming commonplace in countries around the world, including in Europe, Australia, and Latin America, which raises concern for overdose crises like those seen in North America. An important dimension of the risk represented by synthetic drugs is the fact that they are increasingly packaged in counterfeit pill form. These pills-often indistinguishable from authentic pharmaceuticals-have substantially widened the scope of populations susceptible to synthetic drug overdose in North America (eg, among adolescents experimenting with pills or tourists from the USA seeking psychoactive medications from pharmacies in Mexico).

Feruloylacetone and Its Analog Demethoxyferuloylacetone Mitigate Obesity-Related Muscle Atrophy and Insulin Resistance in Mice.

Obesity-induced muscle alterations, such as inflammation, metabolic dysregulation, and myosteatosis, lead to a decline in muscle mass and function, often resulting in sarcopenic obesity. Currently, there are no definitive treatments for sarcopenic obesity beyond lifestyle changes and dietary supplementation. Feruloylacetone (FER), a thermal degradation product of curcumin, and its analog demethoxyferuloylacetone (DFER), derived from the thermal degradation of bisdemethoxycurcumin, have shown potential antiobesity effects in previous studies.
