Iatrogenic pseudoaneurysm formation of the anterior cerebral artery following placement of an external ventricular drain: illustrative case.

Background: External ventricular drains (EVDs) provide an invaluable diagnostic method for accessing cerebrospinal fluid and therapeutically treating elevated intracranial pressure. Although complications including hemorrhage and infection have been well documented, the formation of iatrogenic pseudoaneurysms following EVD placement has rarely been reported. The authors present a case of this exceedingly rare complication of iatrogenic pseudoaneurysm formation following EVD placement.

Transition to Survivorship Care for Adolescents and Young Adults (AYAs) with Acute Leukemia: Provider Perspectives.

Adolescent and young adult (AYA) survivors of acute lymphoblastic or myeloid leukemia diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 39 years are at risk for adverse late health effects following cancer treatment and require ongoing survivorship care. This study aims to understand the landscape of transitioning AYAs with leukemia from active treatment to survivorship care. A cross-sectional, anonymous online survey was sent out via listserv/email.

Promising Predictors of Adolescent Sexual Behavior Outcomes: A Systematic Review of Longitudinal Research.

This review examined research to identify longitudinal predictors of adolescent sexual behavior outcomes. These predictors hold promise as potential outcomes for teen pregnancy prevention program evaluations when measuring sexual behavior outcomes is infeasible or theoretically, methodologically, or developmentally inappropriate. We conducted a systematic review using a prespecified search strategy and processes consistent with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines.

Unlocking hidden treasures: the evolution of high-throughput mass spectrometry in screening for cryptic natural products.

Covering: 1994 to 2024Historically, microbial natural product discovery has been predominantly guided by biological activity from crude microbial extracts with metabolite characterization proceeding one molecule at a time. Despite decades of bioactivity-guided isolations, genomic evidence now suggests that we have only accessed a small fraction of the total natural product potential from microorganisms and that the products of the vast majority of biosynthetic pathways remain to be identified. Here we describe recent advancements that have enabled high-throughput mass spectrometry and comparative metabolomics, which in turn facilitate high-throughput natural product discovery.

Physical function estimates change in pain following IIPT among children with chronic pain.

Introduction: Chronic pain can negatively impact a child's quality of life. Pediatric Intensive Interdisciplinary Pain Treatment (IIPT) programs aim to improve overall functioning despite pain through various rehabilitative strategies. It is, however, unclear whether improved function corresponds to self-reported decrease in pain levels.

Could the R2C2 Feedback and Coaching Model Enhance Feedback Literacy Behaviors: A Qualitative Study Exploring Learner-Preceptor Feedback Conversations.

Introduction: Feedback literacy (FBL) is a critical skill for learners encompassing four behaviors: appreciating feedback, making judgements, managing affect, and taking action. Little guidance has been available for clinical preceptors to promote FBL. The R2C2 feedback and coaching model that guides teachers through building Relationships, exploring Reactions and Reflections, discussing Content and Coaching to co-develop an action plan for follow-up may support FBL.

Direct observation of small molecule activator binding to single PR65 protein.

The reactivation of heterotrimeric protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) through small molecule activators is of interest to therapeutic intervention due to its dysregulation, which is linked to chronic conditions. This study focuses on the PP2A scaffold subunit PR65 and a small molecule activator, ATUX-8385, designed to bind directly to this subunit. Using a label-free single-molecule approach with nanoaperture optical tweezers (NOT), we quantify its binding, obtaining a dissociation constant of 13.

Bose-Einstein Condensation of Polaritons at Room Temperature in a GaAs/AlGaAs Structure.

We report the canonical properties of the Bose-Einstein condensation of polaritons in the weak coupling regime, seen previously in many low-temperature experiments, at room temperature in a GaAs/AlGaAs structure. These effects include a nonlinear energy shift of the polaritons, showing that they are not noninteracting photons, and dramatic line narrowing due to coherence, giving coherent emission with a spectral width of 0.24 meV at room temperature with no external stabilization.

BubbleCam: Engaging Privacy in Remote Sighted Assistance.

Remote sighted assistance (RSA) offers prosthetic support to people with visual impairments (PVI) through image- or video-based conversations with remote sighted assistants. While useful, RSA services introduce privacy concerns, as PVI may reveal private visual content inadvertently. Solutions have emerged to address these concerns on image-based asynchronous RSA, but exploration into solutions for video-based synchronous RSA remains limited.

One-Pot Synthesis of 2-Substituted Indoles and 7-Azaindoles Sequential Alkynylation and Cyclization of 2-Iodo--mesylarylamines and Alkynes in the Presence of CuO.

A one-pot process was developed to synthesize in moderate to high yield a series of 2-substituted indoles and 7-azaindoles starting from 2-iodo--mesylarylamines and terminal alkynes in the presence of CuO in DMF at 90-120 °C. Without isolation of any intermediate, our optimized conditions enabled the introduction of ester, phenyl, hydroxymethyl, hydroxyethyl, -Boc-aminomethyl, and methyl at the 2-postion of indoles and 7-azaindoles. The reaction tolerates a variety of substrates containing halogens, or acid- or base-sensitive functional groups without requiring a Pd catalyst, a ligand, or a base.

Pharmacological Enhancement of Adult Hippocampal Neurogenesis Improves Behavioral Pattern Separation in Young and Aged Male Mice.

Background: Impairments in behavioral pattern separation (BPS)-the ability to distinguish between similar contexts or experiences-contribute to memory interference and overgeneralization seen in many neuropsychiatric conditions, including depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder, dementia, and age-related cognitive decline. Although BPS relies on the dentate gyrus and is sensitive to changes in adult hippocampal neurogenesis, its significance as a pharmacological target has not been tested.

Methods: In this study, we applied a human neural stem cell high-throughput screening cascade to identify compounds that increase human neurogenesis.

This editorial introduces the contents of Volume 16, Issue 6 of , the official journal of the International Union for Pure and Applied Biophysics (IUPAB). Highlights of the Issue include an invited review article by David Alsteens, the winner of the 2024 Michèle Auger Award for Young Scientists' Independent Research and a Special Issue Focus involving a series of articles based on topics addressed at the 7th Nanoengineering for Mechanobiology Symposium 2024. The broad scope of articles and the geographically widespread locations of the contributing authors of these and other reviews in the Issue mirror the goals of IUPAB, namely to organize worldwide advancements, co-operation, communication, and education in biophysics.

Enhanced Stability and Sensitivity for CA-125 Detection Under Microfluidic Shear Flow Using Polyethylene Glycol-Coated Biosensor.

The microfluidic-based point-of-care (POC) diagnostic tool has garnered significant interest in recent years, offering rapid and cost-effective disease detection. There is a growing trend toward integrating microfluidic platforms with biosensors, aligning lab-on-a-chip technologies with POC diagnostic devices. Despite numerous efforts to incorporate biosensors into microfluidic systems, researchers have performed very limited investigations on the stability of biomarker detection when biosensors operate under microfluidic shear flow conditions.

Methods for data extraction and data transformation in convergent integrated mixed methods systematic reviews.

Objective: The objective of this guidance paper is to describe data transformation involving qualitization, including when and how to undertake this process, and to clarify how it aligns with data extraction in order to expand on the current guidance for JBI convergent integrated mixed methods systematic reviews (MMSRs).

Introduction: The convergent integrated approach to MMSRs involves combining extracted data from both quantitative studies (including the quantitative components of mixed methods studies) and qualitative studies (including the qualitative components of mixed methods studies). This process requires data transformation, which can occur either by converting qualitative data into quantitative data (ie, quantitizing) or converting quantitative data into qualitative data (ie, qualitizing).

Preservation of sexual function with Optilume-a novel treatment for lower urinary tract symptoms secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Background: The Optilume benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) catheter system is a novel minimally invasive paclitaxel-coated dilation system that has demonstrated substantial and durable results in urinary flow and symptoms.

Aim: We now assess the impact of Optilume BPH procedure on sexual function.

Methods: Prior published results have described the methods of data collection during the PINNACLE study, which demonstrated durable improvement in urinary symptoms.

Acute Extrinsic Activation of the RANKL Pathway Decreases Wound Healing and Functional Recovery After Spinal Cord Injury in Mice.

Manipulating wound healing-associated signaling after SCI presents a promising avenue for increasing the recovery of function after injury. This study explores the potential of targeting molecular regulators of wound healing, initially identified in nonneural tissues, to enhance outcomes after SCI. Astrocytes, pivotal in central nervous system wound healing, play a crucial role in tissue remodeling and recovery.

Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy After Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: Who Is At Risk?

Introduction: Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy (TCM) is a rare but well recognized complication of subarachnoid hemorrhage associated with increased morbidity and poor clinical outcomes. There is a scarcity of literature describing the prevalence and risk factors associated with this complication. The aim of this study was to identify patients who are at risk of developing TCM in non-traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Efficacy of sodium hypochlorite and peracetic acid in reducing cross-contamination during washing of baby spinach at different water quality levels.

We evaluated the antimicrobial performance of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and peracetic acid (PAA) during washing of baby spinach in water of varying levels of organic load, as measured by its chemical oxygen demand (COD). Escherichia coli TVS353 was spot inoculated onto one unwashed leaf. Sanitizers were added into water with preadjusted COD (300 or 2500 ppm) to achieve concentrations from 20 to 80 ppm.

Surgical management of umbilical endometrioma within an umbilical hernia.

A nulliparous woman in her 40s is referred to gynaecological oncology secondary to umbilical pain and bleeding with menses. Examination revealed a blood-filled cystic mass within an umbilical hernia consistent with umbilical endometrioma. The patient exhausted medical management options, then pursued surgical management via umbilectomy, excision of umbilical endometriosis, lysis of adhesions and umbilical hernia repair.

A Scoping Review of Calls to Action in Pharmacy Education.

Objectives: Calls to action within pharmacy education are frequently seen in the literature, with little information about their authors, audience, and focus, especially whether these calls led to any changes. This scoping review aims to (1) quantitatively and qualitatively characterize the calls to action in pharmacy education and (2) examine the traits of the published articles typically associated with effective advocacy.

Findings: A systematic literature search for scoping review was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses.

The use of public spatial databases in risk analysis: A US-oriented tutorial.

This tutorial focuses on opportunities and challenges associated with using six large, publicly accessible spatial databases published during the last decade by US federal agencies. These databases provide opportunities for researchers to risk-inform policy by comparing community asset, demographic, economic, and social data, along with anthropogenic and natural hazard data at multiple geographic scales. The opportunities for data analysis come with challenges, including data accuracy, variations in the shape and size of data cells, spatial autocorrelation, and other issues endemic to spatial datasets.

Real-World Treatment Patterns Among US Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Initiating Treatment With Once Weekly Semaglutide for Diabetes.

Purpose: Injectable once weekly semaglutide for diabetes (OW sema) is a medication approved in 2017 for the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). In clinical trials, OW sema has been shown to be effective at helping patients achieve glycemic targets. However, more data are needed to understand how patients who initiate treatment with OW sema are treated in the real world and to aid prescribers in making treatment decisions.
