Marine protected areas (MPAs) are widely implemented tools for long-term ocean conservation and resource management. Assessments of MPA performance have largely focused on specific ecosystems individually and have rarely evaluated performance across multiple ecosystems either in an individual MPA or across an MPA network. We evaluated the conservation performance of 59 MPAs in California's large MPA network, which encompasses 4 primary ecosystems (surf zone, kelp forest, shallow reef, deep reef) and 4 bioregions, and identified MPA attributes that best explain performance.

Prevalence of autism diagnosis has historically differed by demographic factors. Using data from 8224 participants drawn from the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program, we examined relationships between demographic factors and parent-reported autism-related traits as captured by the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS; T score > 65) and compared these to relations with parent-reported clinician diagnosis of ASD, in generalized linear mixed effects regression analyses. Results suggested lower odds of autism diagnosis, but not of SRS T > 65, for non-Hispanic Black children (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 0.

Environmental DNA (eDNA) is revolutionizing how we investigate biodiversity in aquatic and terrestrial environments. It is increasingly used for detecting rare and invasive species, assessing biodiversity loss and monitoring fish communities, as it is considered a cost-effective and noninvasive approach. Some environments, however, can be challenging for eDNA analyses.

Cooling perspectives on the risk of pathogenic viruses from thawing permafrost.

mSystems

January 2025

U.S. Geological Survey, Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center, Moffett Field, Moffett Field, California, USA.

Climate change is inducing wide-scale permafrost thaw in the Arctic and subarctic, triggering concerns that long-dormant pathogens could reemerge from the thawing ground and initiate epidemics or pandemics. Viruses, as opposed to bacterial pathogens, garner particular interest because outbreaks cannot be controlled with antibiotics, though the effects can be mitigated by vaccines and newer antiviral drugs. To evaluate the potential hazards posed by viral pathogens emerging from thawing permafrost, we review information from a diverse range of disciplines.

Unraveling Caco-2 cells through functional and transcriptomic assessments.

Regul Toxicol Pharmacol

January 2025

Division of Applied Regulatory Science, Office of Clinical Pharmacology, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 10903 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20993, USA. Electronic address:

The static Caco-2 monolayer is an extensively utilized model for predicting the permeability of small molecules during the drug development process. While these cells can differentiate and develop key functional and morphological features that emulate human enterocytes, they do not fully replicate the complexity of human intestinal physiology. In this study, we investigated functional and morphological aspects of Caco-2 cells, alongside their transcriptomic profiles, with a particular emphasis on genes encoding drug-metabolizing enzymes and drug transporters.

The discipline of ecology and evolutionary biology (EEB) has long grappled with issues of inclusivity and representation, particularly for individuals with systematically excluded and marginalized backgrounds or identities. For example, significant representation disparities still persist that disproportionately affect women and gender minorities; Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC); individuals with disabilities; and people who are LGBTQIA+. Recent calls for action have urged the EEB community to directly address issues of representation, inclusion, justice, and equity.

This article argues for a pluralization of the "platform capitalism" framework, suggesting we should think instead in terms of "platform capitalisms." This pluralization opens the way to a better account of how platforms work in different geocultural contexts, with our focus being on China, India and Japan. The article first outlines several roles the state has taken on in mediating platform capitalisms.

Heat and drought events are increasing in frequency and intensity, posing significant risks to natural and agricultural ecosystems with uncertain effects on the net ecosystem CO exchange (NEE). The current Vegetation Photosynthesis and Respiration Model (VPRM) was adjusted to include soil moisture impacts on the gross ecosystem exchange (GEE) and respiration ( ) fluxes to assess the temporal variability of NEE over south-western Europe for 2001-2022. Warming temperatures lengthen growing seasons, causing an increase in GEE, which is mostly compensated by a similar increment in .

Am J Sports Med

January 2025

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Los Angeles, California, USA; Orthopaedic Institute for Children, Los Angeles, California, USA; Boulder Medical Center, Boulder, Colorado, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Peripheral nerve blocks (PNBs) are commonly used in pediatric orthopedic surgery for pain management and quicker discharge, but they can lead to both short- and long-term complications.
  • A systematic review identified 16 studies (10% of those reviewed) that discussed long-term complications following PNBs in pediatric patients, with 9 reporting issues such as chronic pain, motor deficits, and reduced range of motion.
  • Overall, complications were noted in a small percentage of patients, with chronic pain occurring in 5%, strength deficits in 10%, and sensory deficits in just 0.07%.

Environ Res

January 2025

Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, University of California, Irvine, CA, USA; Department of Statistics, University of California, Irvine, CA, USA; Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, University of California, Irvine, CA, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates PFAS exposure rates during pregnancy, focusing on ingestion of food and indoor dust as primary sources.
  • It uses published dietary intake estimates and a pharmacokinetic model to predict serum concentrations of PFAS in pregnant women, comparing these predictions with actual measured levels.
  • Results suggest that lower dietary intake estimates effectively predict maternal serum PFAS concentrations, while higher estimates tend to overestimate levels, indicating that careful selection of intake data is crucial for accurate predictions.

A Splice Site Variant in SENP7 Results in a Severe Form of Arthrogryposis.

Clin Genet

January 2025

Division of Genetics, Department of Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) is a heterogeneous disorder associated with 1/3000 to 1/5000 live births. We report a consanguineous family with multiple affected members with AMC and identified a recessive mutation in the highly conserved splice donor site, resulting in the mis-splicing of the affected exons. SENP7 is a deSUMOylase that is critical for sarcomere assembly and skeletal muscle contraction by regulating the transcriptional program in the skeletal muscle.

High-energy nuclear collisions create a quark-gluon plasma, whose initial condition and subsequent expansion vary from event to event, impacting the distribution of the eventwise average transverse momentum [P([p_{T}])]. Disentangling the contributions from fluctuations in the nuclear overlap size (geometrical component) and other sources at a fixed size (intrinsic component) remains a challenge. This problem is addressed by measuring the mean, variance, and skewness of P([p_{T}]) in ^{208}Pb+^{208}Pb and ^{129}Xe+^{129}Xe collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.

Self-organization under out-of-equilibrium conditions is ubiquitous in natural systems for the generation of hierarchical solid-state patterns of complex structures with intricate properties. Efforts in applying this strategy to synthetic materials that mimic biological function have resulted in remarkable demonstrations of programmable self-healing and adaptive materials. However, the extension of these efforts to multifunctional stimuli-responsive solid-state materials across defined spatial distributions remains an unrealized technological opportunity.
