Four dual-responsive probe molecules 1,5-bis(thiophene-2-carbaldehyde)carbohydrazone (R1), 1,5-bis(thiophene-2-carbaldehyde)thiocarbohydrazone (R2), 1,5-bis(indole-3-carbaldehyde)carbohydrazone (R3), and 1,5-bis(indole-3-carbaldehyde)thiocarbohydrazone (R4) were synthesized, characterized, and investigated for their sensing efficacy. The initial sensing behavior of the probes was tested by colorimetric signaling, followed by spectral and theoretical techniques, which supported the dual-sensing ability of the selected inorganic ions. The probes exhibited highly selective optical recognition for Cu/Fe cations and F/ClO anions compared to the tested cations and anions.

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) is a gastrointestinal pathogen that affects individuals of all age groups, with infections ranging from subclinical colonization to acute or persistent diarrhea. The bacterium's ability to cause diarrhea depends on the locus of enterocyte effacement (LEE) pathogenicity island. Although regulation of the LEE has been systematically characterized, until the last decade, studies mainly focused on its transcriptional control.

The cause of the dominant 100-kyr cycles in Earth's paleoclimate in the last 800 000 years has since long been debated. We analyze geological temperature proxy data and retrieve an anharmonic potential from time series data. The obtained potential has bistable features but has significant differences compared to the quartic potentials derived from theoretical energy-based models.

Aesthetic considerations played a substantial and positive role in the development and acceptance of plate tectonics, the modern theory of the earth's major geological features and the unifying framework of the earth sciences. Here I give an overview of how aesthetics influenced plate tectonics and take a detailed look at a handful of examples from this history where elegance and simplicity tipped the balance in favour of a given hypothesis. I discuss some implications of this case study for extant accounts of aesthetics in science and argue that the positive role aesthetics played can be explained by recent accounts that posit an indirect and contingent link between knowledge and psychological mechanisms underlying aesthetic appreciation.

Bonnethead sharks ()-a small coastal hammerhead species-demonstrate site fidelity, as females are philopatric while males migrate to mediate gene flow. Consequently, bonnetheads demonstrate population divergence with distance, and Atlantic populations are genetically distinct from those of the Gulf of Mexico.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide and disease burden is expected to increase globally throughout the next several decades, with the majority of cancer-related deaths occurring in metastatic disease. Cancers exhibit known hallmarks that endow them with increased survival and proliferative capacities, frequently as a result of de-stabilizing mutations. However, the genomic features that resolve metastatic clones from primary tumors are not yet well-characterized, as no mutational landscape has been identified as predictive of metastasis.

Rexinoids are compounds that bind to the rexinoid X receptor (RXR) to modulate gene expression and have been proposed as a new class of therapeutics to treat Alzheimer's disease. Different rexinoids will initiate downstream effects that can be quite marked even though such compounds can be structurally similar and have comparable RXR binding affinities. RXR can both homo- and heterodimerize, and these protein-protein interactions and subsequent transactivating potential lead to differential gene expression, depending on the RXR dimeric partner, additional cofactors recruited, and downstream transcription factors that are up- or downregulated.

The logistic equation models single-species population growth with a sigmoid curve that begins as exponential and ends with an asymptotic approach to a final population determined by natural system carrying capacity. But the population of a natural system often does not stabilize as it approaches carrying capacity. Instead, it exhibits periodic change, sometimes with very large amplitudes.
