The shortage of organs for heart transplantation has created a need to explore the use of extended-criteria organs. We report the preliminary use of normothermic TransMedics Organ Care System-an ex vivo approach to preserve extended-criteria brain-dead donor hearts. This System maintains a normal temperature, provides continuous perfusion and oxygenation, reduces ischemic time, and enables additional viability assessment options.

With evolving patient characteristics and patterns of ICU utilization, the impact of dysnatremias on patient outcomes and healthcare costs in the present era have not been well studied. Patients ≥ 18 years admitted to the ICUs in public hospitals in Hong Kong between January 2010 and June 2022 and had at least one serum sodium measurement obtained within 24 h prior to or following ICU admission were stratified into normonatremic (135-145 mmol/L), hyponatremic (< 135 mmol/L) and hypernatremic (> 145 mmol/L) groups. A total of 162,026 patients were included-9098 (5.

The AtriClip device enables the safe and reproducible epicardial clipping of the left atrial appendage. Transapical off-pump beating heart mitral valve repair using NeoChord DS100 Artificial Chordae Delivery System has matured and become more standardized. We aim to evaluate the feasibility of combining NeoChord repair and left atrial appendage exclusion in a single procedure through the same minithoracotomy in patients with mitral valve prolapse and atrial fibrillation.

Background: Late-life depression (LLD) has a poorer prognosis and higher relapse rate than younger adults, with up to one third of patients with LLD showing suboptimal response to antidepressant therapy. LLD has been associated with significant impairment in cognition and daily functioning. Few studies have evaluated the therapeutic effects of high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) on depressive and cognitive symptoms of LLD.

A food ladder is a form of home-based dietary advancement therapy that gradually increases exposure to an allergenic food through the gradual introduction of egg or milk containing food with increasing quantity and allergenicity from extensively heated forms, such as baked goods, to less processed products. While widely considered safe, the food ladder is not risk-free and most of the egg and milk ladder studies only included preschoolers with mild egg and milk allergies, and with no or well-controlled asthma. We propose a Food Ladder Safety Checklist to assist with patient selection using "4 A's" based on available evidence for food ladders, including Age, active or poorly controlled Asthma, history of Anaphylaxis, and Adherence.

Rationale: How striatal dopamine synthesis capacity (DSC) contributes to the pathogenesis of negative symptoms in first-episode schizophrenia (SZ) and delusional disorder (DD) has seldom been explored. As negative symptoms during active psychotic episodes can be complicated by secondary influences, such as positive symptoms, longitudinal investigations may help to clarify the relationship between striatal DSC and negative symptoms and differentiate between primary and secondary negative symptoms.
Objective: A longitudinal study was conducted to examine whether baseline striatal DSC would be related to negative symptoms at 3 months in first-episode SZ and DD patients.

Mentalizing impairment is one of the core features of schizophrenia, and bias judgement of others' gaze as self-directing is common to schizophrenia patients. In this case-control study, 30 patients with first-episode schizophrenia (FES) and 30 matched healthy controls were assigned gaze perception tasks with variable stimulus presentation times (300 ms and no time limit) to determine the presence of self-referential gaze perception (SRGP) bias. The eye movement pattern during the task were tracked and data were analysed using hidden Markov models (HMMs).

A growing body of research suggests an association between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and allergic disorders, but little work has been done to explore the role of external factors such as parental smoking at home in the development of comorbid ADHD and allergic disorders. This study aimed to examine the association between allergic diseases and ADHD adjusted for exposure to parental smoking at home in early adolescents. We recruited 250 male (41.

Transmembrane 29 () gene with unknown function is a gene located on the X chromosome of the mouse genome. The gene showed differential expression in the Vannucci neonatal hypoxic-ischemic mouse brain model. We found the gene expresses with different molecular forms, including a group of long non-coding RNA forming a family of transcripts.

The measurement of costs is fundamental in healthcare decision-making, but it is often challenging. In particular, standardised methods have not been developed in the rare genetic disease population. A reliable and valid tool is critical for research to be locally meaningful yet internationally comparable.

Asparaginase is an important drug to treat childhood haematological malignancies. Data on the association between human leukocyte antigens (HLA) and asparaginase hypersensitivity among Chinese are lacking. We conducted a retrospective study to identify HLA alleles associated with asparaginase hypersensitivity among Chinese children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), mixed phenotype leukaemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), who received asparaginases with HLA typing performed between 2009 and 2019.

Background: The threat and experience of pandemics occur differently for different groups. The rare disease population is at particular risk of being further marginalised during pandemics. In this study, our objective was to assess the hospital mortality patterns in the rare disease and the general populations during the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) pandemics in Hong Kong.

Background: Existing studies on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) mainly covered single growth stages of childhood or adolescence and did not report on the trends in the relationships of HRQoL with sleep duration, physical activity, and screen time. This study aimed to establish the population norm of HRQoL in children and adolescents aged 6-17 years and examine the associations of screen time, sleep duration, and physical activity with HRQoL in this population.
Methods: We conducted a large-scale cross-sectional population-based survey study of Hong Kong children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years.

Numerous studies have identified deficits in the self-monitoring system that are associated with schizophrenia. However, the tasks used in the few previous studies generally involved complex cognitive processes and rarely compared between patients with and without passivity experiences (PE). Here, we examined the deficits in internal motor predictive representation in patients with and without PE, and in healthy controls using a novel paradigm which involved minimal cognitive processes.

Quantification of injury burden is vital for injury prevention, as it provides a guide for setting policies and priorities. This study generated a set of Hong Kong specific disability weights (DWs) derived from patient experiences and hospital records. Patients were recruited from the Accident and Emergency Department (AED) of three major trauma centers in Hong Kong between September 2014 and December 2015 and subsequently interviewed with a focus on health-related quality of life at most three times over a 12-month period.

Inadvertent migration of Avalon-Elite cannula in patients receiving veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) support is often difficult to manage. Cannula repositioning conventionally requires temporary discontinuation of the ECMO support which is often poorly tolerated in small infants with poor pulmonary reserve. We reported a case of a small infant weighing 3.
