High-intensity interval training combined with resistance training improves physiological capacities, strength and quality of life in multiple sclerosis patients: a pilot study.

Background: Numerous studies have shown that mild-to-moderate intensity or resistance exercise training improves physical capacities such as, peak oxygen consumption, maximal tolerated power and strength in multiple sclerosis patients. However, few studies have evaluated the effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) associated to with resistance training. Only few studies have analyzed difference between men and women before and after combined training.

Temporal Trends in Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement in France: FRANCE 2 to FRANCE TAVI.

Background: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is standard therapy for patients with severe aortic stenosis who are at high surgical risk. However, national data regarding procedural characteristics and clinical outcomes over time are limited.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess nationwide performance trends and clinical outcomes of TAVR during a 6-year period.

Da Vinci Xi Robot-Assisted Penetrating Keratoplasty.

Purpose: This study aims (1) to investigate the feasibility of robot-assisted penetrating keratoplasty (PK) using the new Da Vinci Xi Surgical System and (2) to report what we believe to be the first use of this system in experimental eye surgery.

Methods: Robot-assisted PK procedures were performed on human corneal transplants using the Da Vinci Xi Surgical System. After an 8-mm corneal trephination, four interrupted sutures and one 10.

Transcanal surgery for vestibular schwannomas: a pictorial review of radiological findings, surgical anatomy and comparison to the traditional translabyrinthine approach.

Unlabelled: The most popular approaches for vestibular schwannoma (VS) removal are retrosigmoid, middle cranial fossa and translabyrinthine (TL). All require a certain degree of invasivity, bone removal, or brain manipulation. Recently, the authors described the transcanal transpromontorial approaches (TTA), which allow the inner ear to be accessed directly through the external auditory canal (EAC), either with a microscopic (Expanded TTA, or ExpTTA) or even an exclusive endoscopic technique (Endoscopic TTA, or EndoTTA).

Expanded transcanal transpromontorial approach to the internal auditory canal and cerebellopontine angle: a cadaveric study.

The aim of this paper is to describe and evaluate the feasibility of an expanded endoscopic transcanal transpromotorial approach (ExpTTA) to the internal auditory canal and the cerebellopontine angle. To this end, we performed a cadaveric dissection study in September 2015. In total, 2 heads (4 sides) were dissected focusing on anatomical landmarks and surgical feasibility.

Effect of Prime Blood Storage Duration on Clinical Outcome After Pediatric Cardiac Surgery.

Background: In this study, we tested the hypothesis that in pediatric patients undergoing cardiac surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) with blood prime, the storage duration of the packed red blood cells (PRBCs) used in prime led to differences in postoperative complications and metabolic profiles of the patients.

Methods: For this prospective observational study we included 400 pediatric patients undergoing cardiac operations using CPB and requiring PRBCs prime. To study the effect of storage duration of PRBCs on postoperative morbidity, mortality, and metabolic profile, patients were divided into four groups (based on storage duration of PRBCs used in prime).

Expanded transcanal transpromontorial approach to the internal auditory canal: Pilot clinical experience.

Objectives/hypothesis: The aim of this study was to describe and evaluate the feasibility of an expanded transcanal transpromontorial approach, developed from the exclusive endoscopic transcanal transpromontorial approach.

Study Design: Retrospective case series.

Methods: Retrospective chart review of 10 patients operated by an expanded transcanal transpromontorial approach in two tertiary referral centers (University Hospital of Modena, Italy and University Hospital of Verona, Italy).

A rare malformation of bilateral superior vena cava with bilateral partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection in the presence of ostium secundum atrial septal defect: management strategies and pitfalls.

Bilateral superior vena cava (SVC) with bilateral partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection is a very rare congenital cardiac malformation. Here, we are reporting a case of 18-year-old male who had bilateral SVC with bilateral anomalous pulmonary venous connection associated with ostium secundum atrial septal defect. The patient underwent successful surgical correction for the same.

Severe Tardive Dystonia on Low Dose Short Duration Exposure to Atypical Antipsychotics: Factors Explored.

Tardive dystonia (TD) is a serious side effect of antipsychotic medications, more with typical antipsychotics, that is potentially irreversible in affected patients. Studies show that newer atypical antipsychotics have a lower risk of TD. As a result, many clinicians may have developed a false sense of security when prescribing these medications.

Recessive MYPN mutations cause cap myopathy with occasional nemaline rods.

Congenital myopathies are phenotypically and genetically heterogeneous. We describe homozygous truncating mutations in MYPN in 2 unrelated families with a slowly progressive congenital cap myopathy. MYPN encodes the Z-line protein myopalladin implicated in sarcomere integrity.

Sensitising intern doctors to ethical issues in a doctor-patient relationship.

There is a felt need in India to influence the ethical behaviour of doctors by giving students formal education in ethics in medical colleges. Since internship is the interface between learning and independent practice, it is important to sensitise intern doctors to ethical issues in a doctor-patient relationship at this stage.

Colonic Postpolypectomy Bleeding Is Related to Polyp Size and Heparin Use.

Background/aims: We studied factors influencing colon postpolypectomy bleeding (PPB), with a focus on antithrombotic and anticoagulation therapy.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective case-control study of all patients who underwent polypectomy at our tertiary referral center in Italy between 2007 and 2014. Polyp characteristics (number of polyps removed per patient, size, morphology, location, resection technique, prophylactic hemostasis methods) and patient characteristics (age, sex, comorbidities, medication) were analyzed.

Redo Mitral Valve Replacement for Prosthetic Valve Thrombosis: Single Center Experience.

Introduction: Prosthetic Valve Thrombosis (PVT) remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality after valve replacement. Although surgical treatment is usually preferred as life-saving in cases of obstructive PVT, optimal treatment is yet to be decided.

Aim: To evaluate risk factors and outcome of the patients undergoing redo mitral valve surgery for acute PVT.

Prostate cancer diagnosis: Efficacy of a simple electromagnetic MRI-TRUS fusion method to target biopsies.

Objective: To assess that transrectal ultrasound guidance (TRUS) targeted biopsies (TB) aimed with an easy to use electronic real-time fusion registration device have a higher rate of prostate cancer (PC) detection than standard biopsies (SB).

Material And Methods: This prospective study included 130 patients referred for TRUS biopsies after suspicious MRI. They underwent 16-core SB and 2 to 3 cores in each MRI suspicious area, using a fusion software.

Hemodiafiltration-A Technique for Physiological Correction of Priming Solution in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery: An In Vitro Study.

Pediatric cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) circuit invariably requires priming with packed red blood cells (PRBCs). Metabolic composition of stored PRBCs is unphysiological and becomes worse with increasing duration of storage. It is recommended to correct these abnormalities before initiation of CPB.

Outcome of endoscopy-negative iron deficiency anemia in patients above 65: A longitudinal multicenter cohort.

After the age of 65 years, iron deficiency anemia (IDA) requires the elimination of digestive neoplasia and is explored with upper and lower gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy. However, such explorations are negative in 14% to 37% of patients. To further evaluate this issue, we evaluated the outcomes of patients aged over 65 years with endoscopy-negative IDA.

Understanding the determinants of myopic choroidal neovascularization and response to treatment.

Purpose: The pathophysiologic pathways that govern the development of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) are complex. Patchy atrophy and lacquer cracks are known to be major anatomic risk factors for the development of myopic CNV, but they are not alone and much remains to be understood about other factors that influence development. In addition, a greater understanding of the modifiable and nonmodifiable factors that influence outcome, resolution, and recurrence after intravitreal injection of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) could lead to more personalized treatment algorithms that integrate parameters other than the presence of CNV itself and could help improve clinical outcomes and reduce recurrence.

Recurrent Left Atrial Myxoma in a Young Patient: A Rare Entity.

Recurrence of atrial myxoma arising from the site other than inter-atrial septum is quite rare, which is more common in familial than sporadic cases. We here in present a case of 15-year-old young female who presented with recurrence of left atrial (LA) myxoma from unusual site - posterior LA wall after 3 years without any constitutional symptoms, which is the hallmark of recurrence. Complete removal of underlying atrial septum with atrial wall for recurrence prevention is the dictum in primary operation for tumour removal.

Prevention and Treatment of Cancer: Hypes and Hopes 6th International Translational Cancer Research Conference.

Cancer is primarily an "old-age" disease that has an "age-old" history. The overall incidence of cancer is much higher in Western countries, but is rapidly growing in Eastern countries perhaps due to change in life-style. Almost three million studies published to date indicate that cancer is a hyperproliferative disorder that arises from dysregulation of multiple cell signaling pathways.

Endoscopic Management of Attic Cholesteatoma: Long-Term Results.

The main application of endoscopic surgery relies on the middle ear cholesteatoma surgical treatment, although for a definitive validation and acceptance by scientific community, long-term results are needed about recurrent and residual rates of the pathology. The aim of the present paper was to analyze the single institution experience with the long-term results of surgical treatment of attic cholesteatoma.

The Fully Endoscopic Acoustic Neuroma Surgery.

Surgical approaches to vestibular schwannomas (VS) are widely known and extensively recorded. For the first time, an exclusive endoscopic approach to the internal acoustic canal (IAC) was described and used to safely remove a cochlear schwannoma involving IAC in March 2012. The aim of this article was to summarize indications and technique to treat intracanalicular VS by transcanal/transpromontorial endoscopic approach.

Effectiveness of integrated teaching module in pharmacology among medical undergraduates.

Context: Over the years with advancement of science and technology, each subject has become highly specialized. Teaching of medical students has still remained separate in various departments with no scope of integration in majority of medical institutes in India. Study was planned to have an experience of integration in institute and sensitize faculty for integrated teaching-learning (TL) method.
