Genetic screens have been used to identify genes involved in the regulation of different biological processes. We identified growth mutants in a Flp/FRT screen using the eye to identify conditional regulators of cell growth and cell division. Presentation of peptides by class I MHC proteins underlies T cell immune responses to pathogens and cancer. The association between peptide binding affinity and immunogenicity has led to the engineering of modified peptides with improved MHC binding, with the hope that these peptides would be useful for eliciting cross-reactive immune responses directed toward their weak binding, unmodified counterparts. Increasing evidence, however, indicates that T cell receptors (TCRs) can perceive such anchor-modified peptides differently than wild-type (WT) peptides, although the scope of discrimination is unclear.

Irrigation alters source-composition characteristics of groundwater dissolved organic matter in a large arid river basin, Northwestern China.

It has been well documented that agricultural activities lead to significant alterations in surface water dissolved organic matter (DOM), yet their impacts on groundwater DOM remain poorly constrained. The quantity, source, and composition of DOM play a pivotal role in a range of groundwater ecosystem services that are of important ecological and societal values. We assessed the impact of irrigation on the source and compositional characteristics of groundwater DOM in a large river basin supporting intensive agriculture in arid northwestern China.

Data Sources: PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid PsychInfo, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health were searched using terms relevant to mobility, hospitalization, and qualitative research. A total of 510 unique articles were retrieved and screened for eligibility.

Background: Obesity is a global epidemic and prevalence of obesity is higher in African Americans (AAs) compared to Caucasians. The endocannabinoid system (EC) and polymorphism in the endocannabinoid receptor type 1 (CNR1) gene 3813A/G and 4895A/G and in the fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) are associated with obesity. The objective was to explore racial and sex differences in these polymorphisms and the biochemical abnormalities seen in obesity.

Sexual assault has come to the forefront in terms of prevention and education for many social institutions such as college campuses. However, with a growing body of research highlighting the importance and effectiveness of interventions, research examining the impact of sexual assault education (SAE) on altering rape myth acceptance (RMA) among nonstudent populations is severely lacking. This is particularly problematic when considering that the issue of sexual assault extends well beyond academia in the United States.

The Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration Trustees for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill assessed the external oiling of migratory bird species dependent on open water in the Gulf of Mexico following the aforementioned spill. The assessment was designed to evaluate birds that use open water during the winter within 40 km of the Gulf shoreline. We focused on the American white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos), common loon (Gavia immer), and northern gannet (Morus bassanus).

Qualitative socioecological factors of cervical cancer screening use among transgender men.

Lack of attendance to cervical cancer screening (CCS) services is the most attributable factor to the development of cervical cancer. Transgender men, individuals whose gender identity does match with their natal female sex, use CCS less often than the general female population. The underlying reasons for deficient CCS among transgender men relate mostly to their stigmatized identity, such as discrimination and unwelcoming healthcare environments.

The aeroponic rhizosphere microbiome: community dynamics in early succession suggest strong selectional forces.

In the last decade there has been increased interest in the manipulation of rhizosphere microbial communities in soilless systems (hydroponics) through the addition of plant growth promoting microbes (PGPMs) to increase plant nutrition, lower plant stress response, and control pathogens. This method of crop management requires documenting patterns in communities living in plant roots throughout the growing season to inform decisions on timing of application and composition of the supplemental PGPM consortium. As a contribution to this effort, we measured changes in the bacterial community through early succession (first 26 days) in plant root biofilms growing in an indoor commercial aeroponic system where roots were sprayed with a mist of nutrient-amended water.

Pyrazole, Imidazole, and Isoindolone Dipyrrinone Analogues: pH-Dependent Fluorophores That Red-Shift Emission Frequencies in a Basic Solution.

Dipyrrinones are nonfluorescent yellow-pigmented constituents of bilirubin that undergo Z to E isomerization when excited with UV/blue light. Mechanical restriction of the E/Z isomerization process results in highly fluorescent compounds such as ,-methylene-bridged dipyrrinones and xanthoglows. This manuscript describes the first examples of dipyrrinone analogues, which exhibit fluorescence without covalently linking the pyrole-pyrrolidine nitrogen atoms.

Using High-Fidelity Simulation to Evaluate Clinical Skills in Prelicensure Nursing Students.

A prelicensure associate degree nursing program identified the need to formally validate clinical skills and decision-making within nursing students across the program and implemented a process using high-fidelity simulation. The simulated experiences provided an opportunity for both formative and summative evaluation while also affording an opportunity to level student performance across the program. Faculty reported improved consistency in their expectations of student performance within each nursing course, and students reported improved confidence in their clinical practice skills.

Inventory of chytrid diversity in two temporary forest ponds using a multiphasic approach.

Food webs in temporary forest ponds are driven by decomposition of terrestrial inputs. Chytrid fungi are important components of the fungal community, degrading leaf litter in streams reliant on terrestrial inputs and in lake ecosystems where they may stabilize the food web. However, little is known about chytrid fungi in temporary forest ponds.

Allee effects in group-living species are common, but little is known about the way in which Allee effects at the group-level scale up to influence population dynamics. Most notably, it remains unclear whether component Allee effects within groups (where some component of fitness in small groups decreases with decreasing group size) will translate into a population-level demographic Allee effect (where per capita fitness in small populations decreases with decreasing overall population size). Recent years have witnessed a staggeringly high number of workplace aggressive behaviors as well as employee accidents and injuries. Exposure to workplace aggression is associated with a host of negative psychological, emotional, and physiological outcomes, yet research relating workplace aggression to employee safety outcomes is lacking. This study aims to examine the association between exposure to workplace physical and verbal aggression with workplace injuries and underreporting of accidents and near misses.

Male partner involvement on initiation and sustainment of exclusive breastfeeding among HIV-infected post-partum women: Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

Exclusive Breastfeeding (EBF) among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected mothers is known to be associated with a sustained and significant reduction in HIV transmission and has the potential to reduce infant and under-five mortality. Research shows that EBF is not common in many HIV-endemic, resource-limited settings despite recommendations by the World Health Organization. Although evidence abounds that male partner involvement increases HIV testing and uptake and retention of prevention of mother-to-child transmission interventions, few studies have evaluated the impact of male partners' involvement and decision-making on initiation, maintenance, and sustainment of EBF.

Although health care institutions continue to address the importance of diversity initiatives, the standard(s) for treatment remain historically and institutionally grounded in a sociocultural privileging of heterosexuality. As a result, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) communities in health care remain largely invisible. This marked invisibility serves as a call to action, a renaissance of thinking within redefined boundaries and limitations.
