Background: The accurate and safe positioning of cervical pedicle screws is crucial. While augmented reality (AR) use in spine surgery has previously demonstrated clinical utility in the thoracolumbar spine, its technical feasibility in the cervical spine remains less explored.
Purpose: The objective of this study was to assess the precision and safety of AR-assisted pedicle screw placement in the cervical spine.

In this study, we reported one of the first cases where a rare robotic-assisted platform with neuronavigation technology and carbon-fiber-polyetheretherketone (CF/PEEK) screws is employed to surgically treat multilevel thoracic primary spinal epidural melanoma. A 67-year-old male presented with left upper thoracic pain. His magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the thoracic spine revealed a dumbbell-shaped left epidural mass at the T2-3 level.

Percutaneous Achilles tendon lengthening is an effective surgical procedure to treat and prevent forefoot and midfoot ulcerations in patients with diabetes. Patients with diabetes are prone to plantar ulcerations due to a combination of factors, such as peripheral neuropathy, decreased tendon elasticity, peripheral vascular disease, and hyperglycemia. Complications such as re-ulceration and transfer lesion to the heel, associated with a calcaneal gait secondary to over-lengthening, are possible with percutaneous Achilles tendon lengthening.

Pseudoendocrine sarcoma (PES) is a recently described neoplasm typically arising in paravertebral soft tissues. Histologically, PES resembles well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumors but lacks expression of epithelial/neuroendocrine markers, and most show aberrant nuclear β-catenin positivity. We describe the clinicopathological and molecular features and DNA methylation profile of one PES.

Background: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a common surgery to treat cervical degenerative disc disease. Use of an anterior spacer and plate system (ASPS) results in increased disc height, higher fusion rate, lower subsidence rate, and lower complication rate than a spacer alone.1,2 However, anterior cervical plating is associated with complications, such as dysphagia, plate-screw dislodgment, soft tissue injury, neural injury, and esophageal perforation.

One hundred and ninety-six patients from the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation were identified who received SCS with implantation occurring between 2007-2012. Patients were divided into smokers (n = 120) and nonsmokers (n = 76).

Study Design: Experimental in-vivo animal study.
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled ultrasound imaging system's ability to detect, segment, classify, and display neural and other structures during trans-psoas spine surgery.
Summary Of Background Data: Current methodologies for intraoperatively localizing and visualizing neural structures within the psoas are limited and can impact the safety of lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF).

Background: Symptomatic post-operative lumbar epidural hematoma (PLEH) is a complication of lumbar spine surgery that can cause permanent neurologic consequences through compression of the cauda equina and nerve roots.
Questions/purposes: We sought to investigate the incidence, timing, and risk factors for symptomatic epidural hematomas following posterior lumbar decompression, as well as to identify additional post-operative complications associated with symptomatic lumbar epidural hematomas.
Methods: Elective lumbar spine procedures were identified in the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database between 2012 and 2016.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between smoking and back pain in a cross-sectional analysis. Using the Osteoarthritis Initiative database, a multi-center, longitudinal, observational cohort study with 4796 participants, we examined the prevalence of back pain and of limitations in activity due to back pain, as well as the frequency and severity of back pain in participants who were current smokers compared to those who had never smoked. Data was evaluated using binary and ordinal logistic regression analyses.

Objectives: Intraoperative contouring of rods is a common procedure for spine surgeons to match the native curvature of the spine, but it may lead to premature weakening of the rod. This study investigated the effect of different bending methods on rod fatigue performance.

Objective Traditionally, laminectomy has been the preferred surgical approach for the resection of intradural spinal tumors. Recent trends towards minimally invasive techniques have generated interest in hemilaminectomy as an effective alternative surgical approach to resect spinal tumors. However, it remains unclear if the potential benefits of hemilaminectomies, used in other routine spinal procedures, apply to intradural spinal tumors.

Study Design: In vitro biomechanical study.
Objectives: The objective of this in vitro biomechanical range-of-motion (ROM) study was to evaluate spinal segmental stability following fixation with a novel anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) device ("novel device") that possesses integrated and modular no-profile, half-plate, and full-plate fixation capabilities.
Methods: Human cadaveric (n = 18, C3-T1) specimens were divided into 3 groups (n = 6/group).

Objective: Statistical challenges exist when using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to assess traumatic axonal injury (TAI) in individual concussed athletes. The authors examined active professional American football players over a 6-year time period to study potential TAI after concussion and assess optimal methods to analyze DTI at the individual level.
Methods: Active American professional football players recruited prospectively were assessed with DTI, conventional MRI, and standard clinical workup.

Background: The purpose of the present study is to report the 2-year clinical outcomes for chronic low back pain (CLBP) patients treated with radiofrequency (RF) ablation of the basivertebral nerve (BVN) in a randomized controlled trial that previously reported 1-year follow up.
Methods: A total of 147 patients were treated with RF ablation of the BVN in a randomized controlled trial designed to demonstrate safety and efficacy as part of a Food and Drug Administration-Investigational Device Exemption trial. Evaluations, including patient self-assessments, physical and neurological examinations, and safety assessments, were performed at 2 and 6 weeks, and 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months postoperatively.

Objective: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) for chronic intractable pain is typically delivered in pulses, classically programmed between approximately 20 and 100 Hz. Though some recent studies suggest that better pain relief is obtained, with only 10 kHz stimulation, other studies show that single-therapy trials do not always lead to permanent implantation. We evaluated SCS outcomes in subjects given trials with multiple waveforms who did not experience satisfactory trial relief with 10 kHz stimulation only.

Background No consensus exists for the management of unstable thoracolumbar (TL) burst fractures. Surgical options include anterior, lateral, or posterior stabilization (or a combination), depending on the fracture. The potential benefits of anterior reconstruction come with increased operative time and associated morbidity.
