Much hope is placed in the use of assistive technologies (AT) to support older adults and retain their independence and quality of life. AT could also be a way to help fulfill the increasing requirements of caring for an aging population. While many devices are freely available, successful and broad adoption is progressing slowly.

Update on Calcium and Phosphorus Requirements of Preterm Infants and Recommendations for Enteral Mineral Intake.

Nutrients

April 2021

Department of Neonatology, Hospital Universitario La Paz, Department of Pediatrics, Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, 28046 Madrid, Spain.

Background: With current Ca and P recommendations for enteral nutrition, preterm infants, especially VLBW, fail to achieve a bone mineral content (BMC) equivalent to term infants. During the first 3 years, most notably in light at term equivalent age (<-2 Z score) VLBW infants' BMC does not catch up. In adults born preterm with VLBW or SGA, lower adult bone mass, lower peak bone mass, and higher frequency of osteopenia/osteoporosis have been found, implying an increased risk for future bone fractures.

This article describes the data, data flows, and spreadsheet implementations for linking multi-level contribution margin accounting as a subsystem in cost accounting with several versions of a multi-level fixed-charge problem (MLFCP), the latter based on the optimization approach in operations research. This linkage can reveal previously hidden optimization potentials within the framework of multi-level contribution margin accounting, thus providing better information for decision making in companies and other organizations. For the data, plausible fictitious values have been assumed taking into consideration the calculation principles in cost accounting where applicable.

The present study longitudinally evaluated growth, bone mineral density, body composition, and metabolic health outcome in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants whose in-hospital target nutrient intake was within recent recommendations. From six months to three years, bone mineral density (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, DXA), body composition, and metabolic health outcome were compared with a reference group of term infants. The aim was to test whether in-hospital achieved weight gain until 36 weeks of gestation (light or appropriate for term equivalent age; LTEA or ATEA) predicts later growth, bone mineral density (BMD), abdominal obesity, or metabolic health outcomes such as insulin resistance, relative to term infants, during the first three years of life.

The purpose of multi-level contribution margin accounting in cost accounting is to analyze the profitability of products and organizational entities with appropriate allocation of fixed costs and to provide relevant information for short-term, medium- and longer-term decisions. However, the conventional framework of multi-level contribution margin accounting does not usually incorporate a mathematical optimization method that simultaneously integrates variable and fixed costs to determine the best possible product mix within hierarchically structured organizations. This may be surprising in that operations research provides an optimization model in the form of the fixed-charge problem (FCP) that takes into account not only variable costs but also fixed costs of the activities to be planned.

The Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) mass extinction is marked globally by elevated concentrations of iridium, emplaced by a hypervelocity impact event 66 million years ago. Here, we report new data from four independent laboratories that reveal a positive iridium anomaly within the peak-ring sequence of the Chicxulub impact structure, in drill core recovered by IODP-ICDP Expedition 364. The highest concentration of ultrafine meteoritic matter occurs in the post-impact sediments that cover the crater peak ring, just below the lowermost Danian pelagic limestone.

Editorial: Light shielding of bags and tubing used for parenteral nutrition of infants.

Curr Opin Clin Nutr Metab Care

May 2021

LMU - Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich, Div. Metabolic and Nutritional Medicine, Department Paediatrics, Dr von Hauner Children's Hospital, LMU University Hospitals, Munich, Germany.

Purpose Of Review: In July 2019, the Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee (PRAC) of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommended light protection of all parenteral nutrition (PN) solutions containing amino acids (AA) and/or lipids, with or without admixture of vitamins or trace elements, during administration for preterm infants, term infants and children less than 2 years of age. The aim of the present paper was to review the available evidence and to provide recommendations for in hospital and home PN light protection in children.

Recent Findings: Lipid emulsions and multivitamins are susceptible to photooxidation and generation of oxidation products.

The Nördlinger Ries and the Steinheim Basin are widely perceived as a Middle Miocene impact crater doublet. We discovered two independent earthquake-produced seismite horizons in North Alpine Foreland Basin deposits potentially related to both impacts. The older seismite horizon, demonstrated to be associated with the Ries impact, is overlain by distal impact ejecta in situ, forming a unique continental seismite-ejecta couplet within a distance of up to 180 km from the crater.

Mobile Application-Based Interventions for Chronic Pain Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Effectiveness.

J Clin Med

Chronic pain is one of the major causes of disability in the general population. Even though there are effective treatment options available for reducing symptoms, these treatments often do not have consistent lasting effects. As the usage of mobile devices has increased enormously during the last few years, mobile application-based treatment options are widespread.

Target lithologies and post-impact hydrothermal mineral assemblages in a new 1.3 km deep core from the peak ring of the Chicxulub impact crater indicate sulfate reduction was a potential energy source for a microbial ecosystem (Kring 2020). That sulfate was metabolized is confirmed here by microscopic pyrite framboids with δS values of -5 to -35 ‰ and ΔS values between pyrite and source sulfate of 25 to 54 ‰, which are indicative of biologic fractionation rather than inorganic fractionation processes.

Article Synopsis
  • The Maritime Labour Convention (MLC2006), effective August 2013, aims to improve working and living conditions (WLC) for seafarers, with 96 countries ratifying it by March 2020, covering over 90% of global shipping.
  • The study analyzed public port state control (PSC) statistics from seven regional memoranda of understanding (MoU) between 2010 and 2017 to evaluate the impact of the MLC2006 on ship inspections and deficiencies related to WLC.
  • Findings showed stable inspection numbers and a decline in overall deficiencies, particularly for WLC, suggesting improved conditions for seafarers, while two European MoUs reported the highest deficiency rates in both WLC and

The responsibility of social media in times of societal and political manipulation.

The way electorates were influenced to vote for the Brexit referendum, and in presidential elections both in Brazil and the USA, has accelerated a debate about whether and how machine learning techniques can influence citizens' decisions. The access to balanced information is endangered if digital political manipulation can influence voters. The techniques of profiling and targeting on social media platforms can be used for advertising as well as for propaganda: Through tracking of a person's online behaviour, algorithms of social media platforms can create profiles of users.

April 2019

Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences, Neu-Ulm, Germany, Wileystraße 1, 89231 Neu-Ulm, Germany; Centre of Maritime Health and Society, Institute of Public Health, University of Southern Denmark, Esbjerg, Denmark.

Background: The Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC2006) entered into force in 2013 and is the first comprehensive set of standards for better living and working conditions covering aspects such as wages, contracts, food, medical care and social security. Currently, the Convention covers more than 90% of the world's shipping fleet. The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of the MLC2006 on the living and working conditions of seafarers and to test and adjust the methods for future use through a pilot study.

Aim For children with medical complexity, interdisciplinary treatment approaches are required to address the various aspects defined within the biopsychosocial model. Methods The present study identifies dimensions of the biopsychosocial model to generate a standardized visualized severity score for chronic neurological diseases in children. We demonstrate the score's applicability and usefulness in clinical practice among clinicians with and without pediatric board certification with the aid of illustrative patient cases.
