Inhibitors of Apoptosis proteins (IAPs) were discovered through experiments aimed at rescuing apoptosis in insects. Classically associated with the inhibition of apoptosis, the IAP member Survivin also regulates cell cycle progression and is an essential component of the Chromosomal Passenger Complex (CPC), responsible for chromosomal segregation. Although undetectable in most adult tissues, Survivin is expressed in Adult Stem Cells (ASCs) and plays a crucial role in their maintenance.

[Dynamic activity model of movement disorders: a unified view to understand their pathophysiology].

Malfunction of the basal ganglia leads to movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease, dystonia, Huntington's disease, dyskinesia, and hemiballism, but their underlying pathophysiology is still subject to debate. To understand their pathophysiology in a unified manner, we propose the "dynamic activity model", on the basis of alterations of cortically induced responses in individual nuclei of the basal ganglia. In the normal state, electric stimulation in the motor cortex, mimicking cortical activity during initiation of voluntary movements, evokes a triphasic response consisting of early excitation, inhibition, and late excitation in the output stations of the basal ganglia of monkeys, rodents, and humans.

The past decade has seen a global increase in population age, especially in developed countries, where aging involves visual diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which severely affect quality of life (QoL) and mental health, as well as increase isolation and care costs. This study investigated how persons with AMD perceive the impact of technology use on their QoL, focusing on potential disparities between urban and rural contexts in Spain. Using a cross-sectional observational design, data from the 2020 National Statistics Institute's Disability, Personal Autonomy, and Dependency Situations Survey were analyzed, focusing on QoL aspects based on the WHO items of the WHOQOL-100 scale.

Objective: To establish a mortality risk nomogram for predicting in-hospital mortality of sepsis patients in the Chinese population.

Methods: Data were obtained from the medical records of sepsis patients enrolled at the Affiliated Huadu Hospital, Southern Medical University, between 2019 and 2021. A total of 696 sepsis patients were initially included in our research, and 582 cases were finally enrolled after screening and divided into the survival group ( = 400) and the non-survival group ( = 182) according to the incidence of mortality during hospitalization.

Background: Double-blind studies have demonstrated that motor complications in Parkinson's disease (PD) can be reduced with continuous delivery of levodopa. The DopaFuse system is a novel, intraoral micropump that attaches to a retainer and uses a propellant to deliver levodopa/carbidopa (LD/CD) continuously into the mouth.

Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), a proxy of astrocyte reactivity, has been proposed as biomarker of Alzheimer's disease. However, there is limited information about the correlation between blood biomarkers and post-mortem neuropathology. In a single-centre prospective clinicopathological cohort of 139 dementia patients, for which the time-frame between GFAP level determination and neuropathological assessment was exceptionally short (on average 139 days), we analysed this biomarker, measured at three time points, in relation to proxies of disease progression such as cognitive decline and brain weight.
