Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections are difficult to treat due to rapid development of antibiotic drug resistance. The synergistic combination of already-in-use drugs is an alternative to developing new antibiotics to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Here we demonstrate that bismuth-based drugs (bismuth subsalicylate, colloidal bismuth subcitrate) in combination with different classes of antibiotics (tetracyclines, macrolides, quinolones, rifamycins and so on) can eliminate multidrug-resistant P.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) has a high heritable component characteristic of complex diseases, yet many of the genetic risk factors remain unknown. We combined genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on amyloid endophenotypes measured in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and positron emission tomography (PET) as surrogates of amyloid pathology, which may be helpful to understand the underlying biology of the disease.
Methods: We performed a meta-analysis of GWAS of CSF Aβ42 and PET measures combining six independent cohorts (n=2,076).

Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU), one of the most significant complications of diabetes, is a condition that causes anatomical and functional alterations of the foot resulting in an important social and economic impact, related to disability and health care costs. Recently, three-dimensional bioprinting - which allows the fabrication of complex and biocompatible structures - has been identified as a promising approach in the field of regenerative medicine to promote the healing of chronic wounds, such as DFU. In this concise review we highlight the most relevant and recent attempts of using 3D bioprinted constructs - both on animals and people - in order to treat non-healing diabetic ulcers and prevent their worsening.

The grey wolf optimizer is a novel intelligent optimization algorithm that has become popular due to its low number of parameters, fast convergence speed, and simplicity. However, the classical algorithm, with its update strategy allowing wolves to learn only from the alpha wolves, often leads to premature convergence and lower convergence accuracy. Therefore, in this paper, an improved grey wolf optimization algorithm based on scale-free network topology (SFGWO) is proposed to address these issues.

Grandparent roosters are crucial in poultry breeding programs and significantly influence future bird generations' genetic makeup and performance. However, these roosters face considerable challenges from heat stress, which can adversely affect their reproductive performance, semen quality, and overall health and welfare. Our study aimed to investigate the effects of heat stress on the genetics of semen characteristics, identify the appropriate temperature and humidity indices (THI), and determine the threshold point of heat stress to prevent thermal stress.

The differential vulnerability of dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) is a critical and unresolved question in Parkinson´s disease. Studies in mice show diverse susceptibility of subpopulations of nigral dopaminergic neurons to various toxic agents. In the primate midbrain, the molecular phenotypes of dopaminergic neurons and their differential vulnerability are poorly characterized.

Background: The APOE gene is the strongest genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's Disease (LOAD). However, the gene regulatory mechanisms at this locus remain incompletely characterized.
Methods: To identify novel AD-linked functional elements within the APOE locus, we integrated SNP variants with multi-omics data from human postmortem brains including 2,179 RNA-seq samples from 3 brain regions and two ancestries (European and African), 667 DNA methylation samples, and ChIP-seq samples.

The cooling of semen storage at 5 °C from a Thai native rooster (Pradu Hang Dum), supplemented with herbs possessing antioxidant properties, provided limited research. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of (AV) gel supplementation at various levels on the quality of cooled semen and subsequent fertility after artificial insemination. Sixty-four chickens had semen pooled, diluted, and supplemented with different levels of AV gel (0% as control, 0.

α-SnWO is a promising semiconductor for solar water splitting, however, its performance is limited by weak water oxidation and poor charge transfer. In this study, we employ a vapor deposition method to uniformly implement a carbon layer onto the surface of SnWO coupled with a CoNiP cocatalyst, successfully constructing the integrated CoNiP/C/SnWO film photoanode and alleviating the oxidation of Sn when loading electrocatalyst. Incorporating the carbon layer enhances the interface charge conduction behavior between the SnWO substrate and the CoNiP cocatalyst, thereby mitigating charge recombination.

Background: Spousal loss is a stressful life event that is associated with loneliness and social isolation, both of which affect mental and physical health. The primary objective of this paper was to synthesize longitudinal studies that investigated loneliness and social isolation in widowhood.
Methods: A systematic search of the literature was conducted using three electronic databases.

Dissecting biological pathways highlighted by Mendelian gene discovery has provided critical insights into the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD) and neurodegeneration. This approach ultimately catalyzes the identification of potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Here, we identify as a new gene implicated in PD and childhood neurodegeneration.

Social cognition (SC) encompasses a set of cognitive functions that enable individuals to understand and respond appropriately to social interactions. Although focused ultrasound subthalamotomy (FUS-STN) effectively treats Parkinson's disease (PD) clinical motor features, its impact and safety on cognitive-behavioral interactions/interpersonal awareness are unknown. This study investigated the effects of unilateral FUS-STN on facial emotion recognition (FER) and affective and cognitive theory of mind (ToM) in PD patients from a randomized sham-controlled trial (NCT03454425).

Sequence variants in Eyes Shut Homolog (EYS) gene are one of the most frequent causes of autosomal recessive retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Herein, we describe an Italian RP family characterized by EYS-related pseudodominant inheritance. The female proband, her brother, and both her sons showed typical RP, with diminished or non-recordable full-field electroretinogram, narrowing of visual field, and variable losses of central vision.

Tensor networks are emerging architectures for implementing quantum classification models. The branching multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (BMERA) is a tensor network known for its enhanced entanglement properties. This paper introduces a hybrid quantum-classical classification model based on BMERA and explores the correlation between circuit layout, expressiveness, and classification accuracy.

Aberrant alternative splicing events play a critical role in cancer biology, contributing to tumor invasion, metastasis, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and drug resistance. Recent studies have shown that alternative splicing is a key feature for transcriptomic variations in colorectal cancer, which ranks third among malignant tumors worldwide in both incidence and mortality. Long non-coding RNAs can modulate this process by acting as trans-regulatory agents, recruiting splicing factors, or driving them to specific targeted genes.

Background And Aim: Vasovagal tonus index (VVTI) serves as a straightforward assessment tool for autonomic function during both physiological and pathological conditions, including pregnancy, in horses. Obtaining VVTI through a modified base apex lead system could be a practical and comfortable solution. In this study, we assessed VVTI in horses with respect to training status and electrocardiographic measurements utilizing a novel modified base apex lead technique.
