Previous studies suggested that pitch characteristics of lexical tones in Standard Chinese influence various sensory perceptions, but whether they iconically bias emotional experience remained unclear. We analyzed the arousal and valence ratings of bi-syllabic words in two corpora (Study 1) and conducted an affect rating experiment using a carefully designed corpus of bi-syllabic words (Study 2). Two-alternative forced-choice tasks further tested the robustness of lexical tones' affective iconicity in an auditory nonce word context (Study 3).

Multicenter validation of a galactomannan chemiluminescence immunoassay for the diagnosis of pulmonary aspergillosis on serum of patients with hematological disease.

An accurate diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis (IA) in patients with underlying hematological malignancies relies heavily on galactomannan detection. In this study, we compared the VirCLIA chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA) with the frequently used Platelia enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) on serum from hematology patients with suspected IA. Patients were categorized according to EORTC/MSGERC 2020 definitions into proven/probable IA and possible/no IA.

Nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat receptor (NLR) genes encode a pivotal class of plant immune receptors. However, their rampant duplication and loss have made inferring their genomic evolutionary trajectory difficult, exemplified by the loss of TNL family genes in monocots. In this study, we introduce a novel classification system for angiosperm NLR genes, grounded in network analysis of micro-synteny information.

Psychometric accuracy of the Dutch Child and Adolescent Trauma Screener.

The aim of this study is to investigate the psychometrics of the Dutch version of the Child and Adolescent Trauma Screener (CATS-2). By this, an international recognized instrument to screen symptoms of post-traumatic stress (PTSS) in children and adolescents according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5) becomes available for Dutch youth. Based on the validated CATS-2 we established the Dutch version, named the KJTS.

Methods: This study was conducted in the Netherlands from February 2021 to April 2022.

Background: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) has a poor prognosis with current treatment options. Novel therapeutic strategies are urgently needed to enhance treatment outcomes for TNBC.

Objective: This study evaluated the efficacy of a three-agent regimen compared to existing treatment regimens in a TNBC mouse model, and elucidated its potential mechanisms of action.

Minimally invasive versus open lateral pancreaticojejunostomy in patients with painful chronic pancreatitis: systematic review.

Background: Patients with painful chronic pancreatitis combined with a dilated main pancreatic duct and a normal size pancreatic head are treated according to guidelines by lateral pancreaticojejunostomy (LPJ). This systematic review compared outcomes of minimally invasive LPJ and open LPJ.

Methods: From 1 January 2000 until 13 November 2023, series reporting on minimally invasive LPJ and open LPJ in patients with symptomatic chronic pancreatitis were included.

Age at first full-term pregnancy and other reproductive factors are associated with mammographic breast density in postmenopausal women: a study in Flanders, Belgium.

This study evaluated the association between age at first full-term pregnancy (FFTP) and mammographic breast density (MBD) in postmenopausal women. 1,034 women, age 50-69y, were recruited from the Flemish (Belgium) population-based breast cancer screening program. Participants completed a questionnaire on lifestyle and reproductive factors.

On the structure of nanoparticle clusters: effects of long-range interactions.

The fractal structure of aggregates consisting of primary nanoparticles naturally arises during their synthesis. While typically considered to be a fully stochastic process, we suspect long-range interactions, in particular van der Waals forces, to induce an active pull on particles, altering the clustering process. Using an off-grid 3D model, we show that an active pull decreases the density and fractal dimension of formed clusters.

Hinge Position Dominance Over Osteotomy Inclination in Medial Open-Wedge High Tibial Osteotomy: A Key Factor in Posterior Tibial Slope Changes.

Objective: A medial open-wedge high tibial osteotomy (MOWHTO) may increase the posterior tibial slope (PTS). The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the osteotomy inclination angle (in the sagittal plane) in combination with different hinge positions (in the transverse plane) on the change in PTS due to a MOWHTO.

Methods: We developed a mathematical approach to determine the effect of the osteotomy inclination angle combined with different hinge positions.

Lip prints, or cheiloscopy, are unique patterns of grooves and wrinkles, gaining prominence in forensic science as reliable tools for personal identification, akin to fingerprints and DNA profiling. Advances in imaging techniques have enhanced their forensic applicability. This study conducts a bibliometric analysis to explore global research trends, key contributors, and thematic developments in lip print research.

Algorithmic profiling as a source of hermeneutical injustice.

It is well-established that algorithms can be instruments of injustice. It is less frequently discussed, however, how current modes of AI deployment often make the very discovery of injustice difficult, if not impossible. In this article, we focus on the effects of algorithmic profiling on epistemic agency.

Updated peer review of the pesticide risk assessment of the active substance spinosad.

The conclusions of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) following the peer review of the initial risk assessments carried out by the competent authorities of the rapporteur Member State, the Netherlands, and co-rapporteur Member State, France, for the pesticide active substance spinosad and the assessment of applications for maximum residue levels (MRLs) are reported. The context of the peer review was that required by Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 844/2012. The conclusions were reached on the basis of the evaluation of the representative uses of spinosad as insecticide on bulb/dry onions, maize (fodder and grain), sweet corn, grapes (table and wine), lettuce, potato, aubergine, pepper and tomato.

The use of submillimeter resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is increasing in popularity due to the prospect of studying human brain activation non-invasively at the scale of cortical layers and columns. This method, known as laminar fMRI, is inherently signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)-limited, especially at lower field strengths, with the dominant noise source being of thermal origin. Furthermore, laminar fMRI is challenged with signal displacements due to draining vein effects in conventional gradient-echo blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) imaging contrasts.

Nurse-Led Self-Management Support After Organ Transplantation - A Multicenter, Stepped-Wedge Randomized Controlled Trial.

Unlabelled: In this unblinded multi-center stepped-wedge randomized controlled trial the effectiveness of the nurse-led ZENN-intervention was tested in promoting self-management skills in comparison to standard care among heart, lung and kidney transplant recipients. This intervention is based on behaviour change theories and was conducted in four sessions over 6 months at the outpatient clinic. The experimental group received standard care, plus the ZENN-intervention, while the control group received only standard care.

Expanding the Scope of Microvascular Inflammation: Unveiling Its Presence Beyond Antibody-Mediated Rejection Into T-Cell Mediated Contexts.

Microvascular inflammation (MVI) in kidney transplant biopsies is mainly associated with antibody-mediated rejection (AMR), sparking debate within the Banff Classification of Renal Allograft Pathology regarding its exclusivity. This study reviewed the literature on MVI in T cell-mediated rejection (TCMR) and analyzed MVI in our transplant population. We searched English publications in MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane, and Google Scholar until June 2024, focusing on glomerulitis (g), peritubular capillaritis (ptc), or MVI in kidney transplant biopsies classified as TCMR.

Design of a wasp-inspired biopsy needle capable of self-propulsion and friction-based tissue transport.

Percutaneous pancreatic core biopsy is conclusive but challenging due to large-diameter needles, while smaller-diameter needles used in aspiration methods suffer from buckling and clogging. Inspired by the ovipositor of parasitic wasps, which resists buckling through self-propulsion and prevents clogging via friction-based transport, research has led to the integration of these functionalities into multi-segment needle designs or tissue transport system designs. This study aimed to combine these wasp-inspired functionalities into a single biopsy needle by changing the interconnection of the needle segments.

Impact of a national HPV vaccination programme for preadolescent girls on cytology screening performance and CIN2+ incidence: five-year population-based cervical screening results from Slovenia.

Background: HPV vaccination is most efficacious in preventing cervical cancer and its precursors when administered during preadolescence. Because in Slovenia women are invited for cytology screening from age 20, women targeted for preadolescent HPV vaccination have been screening-eligible since 2018. We aim to assess the impact of preadolescent HPV vaccination programme on cytology screening performance and CIN2+ incidence.

Association between gut microbiome profiles and host metabolic health across the life course: a population-based study.

Background: The human gut microbiome changes considerably over time. Previous studies have shown that gut microbiome profiles correlate with multiple metabolic traits. As disease development is likely a lifelong process, evidence gathered at different life stages would help gain a better understanding of this correlation.

Receiver design for the REACH global 21-cm signal experiment.

We detail the REACH radiometric system designed to enable measurements of the 21-cm neutral hydrogen line. Included is the radiometer architecture and end-to-end system simulations as well as a discussion of the challenges intrinsic to highly-calibratable system development. Following this, we share laboratory results based on the calculation of noise wave parameters utilising an over-constrained least squares approach.
