The impact of radiofrequency thermocoagulation on brain connectivity in drug-resistant epilepsy: Insights from stereo-electroencephalography and cortico-cortical evoked potentials.

Objective: To investigate whether local lesions created by stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG)-guided radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RFTC) affect distant brain connectivity and excitability in patients with focal, drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE).

Methods: Ten patients with focal DRE underwent SEEG implantation and subsequently 1 Hz bipolar repetitive electrical stimulation (RES) for 30 s before and after RFTC. Root mean square (RMS) of cortico-cortical evoked potentials (CCEPs) was calculated for 15 ms to 300 ms post-stimulation with baseline correction.

Plant species, inundation, and sediment grain size control the development of sediment stability in tidal marshes.

Tidal marshes can contribute to nature-based shoreline protection by reducing the wave load onto the shore and reducing the erosion of the sediment bed. To implement such nature-based shoreline erosion protection requires the ability to quickly restore or create highly stable and erosion-resistant tidal marshes at places where they currently do not yet occur. Therefore, we aim to identify the drivers controlling the rate by which sediment stability builds up in young pioneer marshes.

"Showing the Best Version of Yourself": The Importance of Dynamic Assessment for Trainees Undergoing Workplace-Based Assessments in Postgraduate Training.

Workplace-based assessments (WPBAs) in postgraduate training may not always provide an accurate representation of a trainee's capability to perform a given task, or a true measure of a trainee's overall competence in clinical practice settings. This article describes how trainers can use a theory-driven and evidence-based intervention called dynamic assessment for providing an individual with the best opportunity to demonstrate a more accurate representation of their performance, and ultimately present the best version of themselves when undergoing an observed WPBA, such as a Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS) or Mini Consultation Evaluation Exercise (MiniCEX). Dynamic assessment simultaneously combines educational support with assessment as the trainee undergoes the WPBA by using focussed questions as prompts to facilitate an individual trainee's essential coordination of their motivational and thinking processes since this is often challenged during assessments.

Biofabricated tissue model for determining biocompatibility of metallic coatings.

Metallic biomaterials are extensively used in orthopedics and dentistry, either as implants or coatings. In both cases, metal ions come into contact with surrounding tissues causing a particular cell response. Here, we present a biofabricated tissue model, consisting of a hydrogel reinforced with a melt electrowritten mesh, to study the effects of bound and released metal ions on surrounding cells embedded in a hydrogel matrix.

Interrelation between domains of functioning and white matter hyperintensities in geriatric memory clinic patients: a holistic approach through network analysis.

Objectives: To explore interrelations between cognitive, physical, affective, and daily functioning, quality of life and white matter hyperintensities (WMH) in a geriatric memory clinic sample.

Method: Participants received brain imaging, comprehensive geriatric assessment and neuropsychological evaluation including measurements of cognitive, physical, affective, and daily functioning and health-related quality of life. Data was analyzed using multiple linear regressions and network analysis using (moderated) mixed graphical models.

The comparison of spread of methylene blue after the Pericapsular Nerve Group block and a double injection selectively targeting the articular branches to the anterior hip capsule in human cadavers.

Objectives: In this study, the spread of methylene blue was compared between an ultrasound-guided Pericapsular Nerve Group (PENG) block and a double injection technique, where the approach towards the inferomedial acetabulum was added to the latter.

Methods: The two techniques were performed in 11 fresh frozen cadavers. The spread was measured after anatomical dissection in which the supplying femoral and obturator nerves were identified.

Background: Iron deficiency (ID) is currently defined as a serum ferritin level <100 or 100 to 299 ng/mL with transferrin saturation (TSAT) <20%. However, graphite suffers from polarization and deteriorating side-reactions at the high currents needed for fast charging.

The concepts of irreversibility and reversibility in research on anthropogenic environmental changes.

The concept of "irreversibility" and its counterpart "reversibility" have become prominent in environmental and ecological research on human-induced changes, thresholds, climate tipping points, ecosystem degradation, and losses in the cryosphere and biosphere. Through a systematic literature review, we show that in these research fields, these notions are not only descriptive terms, but can have different semantic functions and normative aspects. The results suggest that, in the context of environmental and ecological research the concepts of irreversibility and reversibility have taken on additional usages in comparison to their contexts in theoretical thermodynamics and mechanics.

Objectives: This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of National Dementia Plans (NDPs) from selected European and North American countries, focusing on the distinct prevention strategies outlined and the approaches employed for reducing dementia risk.

Method: The sample consisted of 16 NDPs from Austria, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA. These NDPs were retrieved from the Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI) database, with regular updates checked on official governmental websites.

Permafrost thaw poses diverse risks to Arctic environments and livelihoods. Understanding the effects of permafrost thaw is vital for informed policymaking and adaptation efforts. Here, we present the consolidated findings of a risk analysis spanning four study regions: Longyearbyen (Svalbard, Norway), the Avannaata municipality (Greenland), the Beaufort Sea region and the Mackenzie River Delta (Canada) and the Bulunskiy District of the Sakha Republic (Russia).

Energy Transition in Northern Netherlands: seeking a balance between top-down and bottom-up initiatives.

This brief report focuses on top-down and bottom-up processes within the field of energy transition. It aims at gaining a better understanding of the needs of the local energy initiatives. On this basis, policy recommendations are formulated to help the municipality of Groningen to facilitate local energy initiatives, ultimately leading to a more balanced approach of the local energy transition.

We present a complete framework of stochastic thermodynamics for a single-mode linear optical cavity driven on resonance. We first show that the steady-state intracavity field follows the equilibrium Boltzmann distribution. The effective temperature is given by the noise variance, and the equilibration rate is the dissipation rate.

Nanophotonic-Enhanced Thermal Circular Dichroism for Chiral Sensing.

Circular dichroism (CD) can distinguish the handedness of the chiral molecules. However, it is typically very weak due to vanishing absorption at low molecular concentrations. Here, we suggest thermal CD (TCD) for chiral detection, leveraging the temperature difference in the chiral sample when subjected to right- and left-circularly polarized excitations.

A non-interventional biomarker study in patients with adenocarcinoma of the lung treated with nintedanib plus docetaxel following progression on chemotherapy and/or immunotherapy: LUME-BioNIS.

Background: Anti-angiogenic agents, such as nintedanib and ramucirumab, when combined with docetaxel, are subsequent treatment options in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who have failed on first-line chemotherapy or immunochemotherapy. However, to date, there are no validated predictive biomarkers for efficacy of anti-angiogenic therapies in this setting. The aim of this study was to explore whether genetic or genomic markers, alone or combined with clinical covariates, could be used to predict overall survival (OS) in patients with NSCLC who are eligible for treatment with nintedanib plus docetaxel.

The interplay between mitochondrial DNA genotypes, female infertility, ovarian response, and mutagenesis in oocytes.

Study Question: Is there an association between different mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genotypes and female infertility or ovarian response, and is the appearance of variants in the oocytes favored by medically assisted reproduction (MAR) techniques?

Summary Answer: Ovarian response was negatively associated with global non-synonymous protein-coding homoplasmic variants but positively associated with haplogroup K; the number of oocytes retrieved in a cycle correlates with the number of heteroplasmic variants in the oocytes, principally with variants located in the hypervariable (HV) region and rRNA loci, as well as non-synonymous protein-coding variants.

What Is Known Already: Several genes have been shown to be positively associated with infertility, and there is growing concern that MAR may facilitate the transmission of these harmful variants to offspring, thereby passing on infertility. The potential role of mtDNA variants in these two perspectives remains poorly understood.

Objectives: The overall impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mortality can be estimated by the assessment of excess deaths from all causes because the reported number of deaths due to COVID-19 do not accurately reflect the true death toll. We assessed excess mortality in 2020 and 2021 in the Netherlands.

Methods: All analyses were performed on data from comprehensive nationwide registers provided by Statistics Netherlands (Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek), including demographic characteristics and mortality.
