Lung function tracking in children with perinatally acquired HIV following early antiretroviral therapy initiation.

Introduction: Lung disease remains a frequent complication in children with perinatal HIV infection (CHIV) and exposure without infection (CHEU), resulting in diminished lung function. In CHIV, early antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation improves survival and extrapulmonary outcomes. However, it is unknown if there is benefit to lung function.

Case Report: Diagnosis of Petrous Apex IgG4-Related Disease by Middle Cranial Fossa Craniotomy and Temporal Bone Biopsy.

Introduction: Primary IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) of the temporal bone is a rare condition. Unlike typical petrous apicitis or Gradenigo syndrome, our patient presented exclusively with unilateral cranial nerve VI palsy and symptoms of diplopia. Skull base imaging demonstrated a destructive bony lesion in the petrous apex.

Non-diabetic ketoacidosis associated with a low carbohydrate, high fat diet in a postpartum lactating female.

A 31-year old non-diabetic woman presented to our hospital with symptoms of dehydration, drowsiness, fatigue, shortness of breath and vomiting present for two consecutive days prior to admission. She had started a low carbohydrate, high fat (LCHF) diet to induce weight loss while breastfeeding her 4-month-old child 2 weeks prior to admission. The patient was found to have a severely high anion gap metabolic acidosis.

Early identification and referral of organ donors in five private hospitals: A survey to determine the knowledge and views of critical care professional nurses pre and post a PowerPoint training intervention.

Background: Internationally, the declining number of organ donors does not meet the rising demand for life-saving solid organ transplant operations. Critical care professional nurses play an important role in the identification of organ donors. A deeper understanding is needed of the missed opportunities of identification and referral of potential organ donors to organ transplant co-ordinators in the critical care environment.
