Introduction: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is widely performed as the preferred treatment for kidney stones larger than 20Â mm in pediatric patients, with current research focusing on comparing outcomes between prone and supine positions to determine optimal procedural positioning. Therefore, the aim of this study is to compare the efficacy of prone versus supine positioning in pediatric PCNL, providing clarity on this critical aspect of the procedure to guide clinical decision-making.
Methods: We conducted a systematic review in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane, Web of Science and Google Scholar.

Purpose: Autosomal Dominant Hypocalcemia type 1 (ADH1), caused by gain-of-function variants in the calcium-sensing receptor (CASR), is characterized by a variable degree of hypocalcemia and hypercalciuria with inappropriately low PTH. The clinical spectrum is broad, ranging from being asymptomatic to presenting with severe clinical features of hypocalcemia and end-organ damage such as nephrolithiasis and intracerebral calcifications. Although the underlying pathophysiology is different, ADH1 patients are often managed as patients with 'classical' primary hypoparathyroidism, possibly leading to (exacerbation of) hypercalciuria.

Background: The cardiometabolic index (CMI), encompassing obesity and lipid metrics, is potentially linked to kidney stone prevalence in diabetic patients. However, studies on this association are sparse. This research evaluates CMI's impact on kidney stone occurrence in this group.

The treatment of upper urinary tract stones is one of the main urological activities. Endoscopic surgical techniques, namely semirigid or flexible ureteroscopy (URS) and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), represent a major therapeutic modality, alternatively to chemolysis, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy and open, laparoscopic or robotic-assisted surgery. In this article, the specificities of these endoscopic techniques, their clinical performances, as well as their development following recent technological advances are discussed.

Background: Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is a rare condition featured by severe loss of proteins through the gastrointestinal tract. Rare PLE cases complicated with congenital kidney stones have been reported. This case study aimed to illustrate our experiences on the diagnosis and treatment of PLE and congenital kidney stones in a neonate.

Increasing evidence suggested nephrolithiasis has a close linkage with carotid atherosclerosis (CAS), with Randall's plaque (RP) being a precursor to kidney stones. Our study aimed to examine the crosstalk genes and potential molecular mechanisms between RP and CAS. We obtained microarray data for RP and CAS from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) and used weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) and differential gene expression (DEG) analysis to identify shared genes.

The Maillard reaction is a non-enzymatic reaction between an amino acid and carbohydrate. We hypothesized that continuous washing of cystine stones with glucose could theoretically prevent growth of an existing cystine stone or even reduce its size leading to a decrease in stone events. Sodium/Glucose Cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, well known for inducing glucosuria, were used to test this hypothesis in an initial series of patients.

Urolithiasis is a globally prevalent disease with high incidence and recurrence rates and is often accompanied by severe pain. Its ideal treatment is spontaneous stone passage, avoiding the invasiveness associated with surgery. However, the mechanisms underlying spontaneous stone passage remain unclear.

Importance: Several public recommendations exist regarding the amount of daily water intake, yet the supporting evidence is not clear, and benefits of increasing water consumption are not well-established.
Objective: To summarize evidence from randomized clinical trials (RCTs) pertaining to the health-related outcomes associated with increased or decreased daily water consumption.
Evidence Review: A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase was performed up to April 6, 2023.

Purpose: To systematically review the use of suction/vacuum-assisted retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in children/adolescents with kidney stones.
Methods: The PICOS model (Patient Intervention Comparison Outcome Study type) was used to frame and answer the clinical question; P: children and adolescent men with kidney stones; I: use of suction during PCNL or RIRS; C: no suction devices or none; O: complications and stone-free rate (SFR); S: prospective and retrospective studies; case reports. The literature search was performed on 14th May 2024 using Embase, PubMed, and Scopus.

Kidney stone disease (KSD) is facing rising global prevalence and recurrence rates. Mendelian randomization aids in drug repurposing and the discovery of therapeutic targets. This study utilized Mendelian randomization (MR) to identify protein targets for KSD treatment and assess potential adverse drug reactions.

Background: Dent's disease (DD) is a rare X-linked recessive tubulopathy characterized by low molecular weight proteinuria, hypercalciuria, nephrocalcinosis/nephrolithiasis and chronic kidney disease. With this manuscript, we reported three patients diagnosed as DD in our department in the last 10 years and thereby described the genetics, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, course and management of the disease.
Cases: The first case was a male newborn who was consulted to our department after medullary nephrocalcinosis was detected.

Kidney stone prevalence is rapidly increasing worldwide, and decreasing stone growth and recurrence is critical to reducing morbidity. Preventative approaches vary with kidney stone type, so knowledge of stone composition and a thorough history and metabolic evaluation are necessary to individualize therapy. The cases presented herein highlight treatment strategies for the most common stone types seen in clinical practice with practical pearls for the nephrologist.

Oncostatin M (OSM) has pleiotropic effects on various inflammatory diseases, including kidney stone disease. The prevalence of kidney stones has increased worldwide, despite recent therapeutic advances, due to its high recurrence rate, suggesting the importance of prevention of repeated recurrence in the treatment of kidney stone disease. Using a mouse model of renal crystal formation, we investigated the preventive effects of blockade of OSM receptor β (OSMRβ) signaling on the development of kidney stone disease by treatment with a monoclonal anti-OSMRβ antibody that we generated.

This study examined the relationship between the systemic inflammation response index (SIRI) and kidney stone occurrence in adults in the United States. It also evaluated its potential as a predictor of kidney stones. A total of 24,833 adult participants were included in the study using cross-sectional data from the 2007-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database.
