Uric acid, a waste metabolite among humans, was linked to various cognitive outcomes. We describe sex and age-group specific associations of baseline serum uric acid (SUAbase) and significant change in SUA (ΔSUA: 1 versus 0 = decrease versus no change; 2 versus 0 = increase versus no change) with longitudinal annual rate of cognitive change among a large sample of urban adults. Data from the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span study, 2004-2009 (visit 1) and 2009-2013 (visit 2) were used.

Objectives: Literature review of treating the piriform apex sinus tract through microlaryngoscopy and a case description.

The Medicare hospital value-based purchasing (HVBP) program that links Medicare payments to quality of care became effective in 2013 in the United States. Hospital efficiency will be added to the HVBP in 2015. It is unclear whether hospital efficiency-specific hospital characteristics are associated with HVBP performance scores and the subsequent incentive payments.

Methods: Single-center 4-year observational study of pediatric encephalitis associated with NMDA-R antibodies in the serum and/or the cerebrospinal fluid.

Results: Three girls with anti-NMDA-R encephalitis were identified.

Context: C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP), a paracrine factor of the growth plate, plays a key role in stimulating bone growth. The amino-terminal propeptide of CNP (NTproCNP) is produced in equimolar amounts with CNP and is measurable in plasma, providing a potential biomarker for growth plate activity and, hence, linear growth.

Context: Children with constitutional delay of growth and maturation (CDGM) tend to be thin and have a growth pattern reminiscent of nutritional insufficiency.

Objective: Our objective was to compare differences in nutrition, body composition, bone mineral density, and resting and total energy expenditure (REE/TEE) in boys with CDGM and controls. Full-body patient simulators provide the technology and the environment necessary for excellent clinical education while eliminating risk to the patient. The extension of simulator-based training into management of basic and critical situations in complex patient populations is natural. We describe the derivation of an infant cardiovascular model through the redefinition of a complete set of parameters for an existing adult model.

Patients with a variety of catabolic illnesses or conditions are subjected to protein catabolic losses which we attempt to address with traditional enteral or parenteral nutritional support. Accelerated protein catabolism and energy requirements together with inadequate intake or assimilation of exogenous amino acids are all contributing causes. Circulating glucocortico-steroids may play a significant contributing role in the redistribution and loss of body protein in acute, and possibly chronic, catabolic illnesses but such complex metabolic conditions are not easily studied.
