Whole-genome sequencing resolves biochemical misidentification of species from urogenital specimens.

J Clin Microbiol

November 2024

STD Laboratory Reference and Research Branch, Division of STD Prevention, NCHHSTP, CDC, Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Ng (Neisseria gonorrhoeae) is a major cause of gonorrhea, infecting 87 million people yearly and showing increasing drug resistance, while Nm (Neisseria meningitidis), common in the oropharynx, can lead to bacterial meningitis with about 1.2 million cases globally.*
  • Both pathogens can occupy the same anatomical spaces, allowing for potential horizontal gene transfer (HGT), complicating their detection and treatment.*
  • A study in Milwaukee found isolates that were initially misidentified as Nm but were confirmed as Ng through whole-genome sequencing, showing evidence of HGT from Nm that affected a gene used in differentiating the two species.*

Unilateral Surgical Treatment of Severe Deviated Condylar Base Fracture in Pediatric Bilateral Condylar Fracture: 12-Year Follow-Up.

J Craniofac Surg

January 2025

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Tokyo Women's Medical University, School of Medicine, Shinjuku-ku.

Article Synopsis
  • - Pediatric condylar fractures often heal on their own, but severe deviations may require surgical intervention, as seen in a case involving a 7-year-old girl with multiple mandibular fractures from a fall.
  • - The girl underwent surgery to fix the severely deviated right condyle and had the mini-plate removed four months later.
  • - Over 12 years post-surgery, she maintained normal jaw function and appearance, but the surgically repaired condyle was larger than the untreated one, indicating that surgery supported better growth.

Single-cell sequencing has revolutionized our understanding of cellular heterogeneity and cell state, enabling investigations across diverse fields such as developmental biology, immunology, and cancer biology. However, obtaining a high-quality single-cell suspension is still challenging, particularly when starting with limited materials like Zebrafish embryos, a powerful animal model for studying developmental processes and human diseases. Here, we present an optimized protocol for isolating single cells from individual zebrafish embryos, offering a valuable resource for researchers interested in working with limited starting material.

The main deterrent to long-term space travel is the risk of Radiation Exposure Induced Death (REID). The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has adopted Permissible Exposure Levels (PELs) to limit the probability of REID to 3% for the risk of death due to radiation-induced carcinogenesis. The most significant contributor to current REID estimates for astronauts is the risk of lung cancer.

It is estimated that 1 in 36 children are affected by autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the United States, which is nearly a twofold increase from a decade ago. Recent genetic studies have identified de novo loss-of-function (dnLoF) mutations in the Down Syndrome Cell Adhesion Molecule (DSCAM) as a strong risk factor for ASD. Previous research has shown that DSCAM ablation confers social interaction deficits and perseverative behaviors in mouse models.

Background: In adults, upfront intraoperative cholangiogram with laparoscopic common bile duct exploration (LCBDE) is well accepted for management of choledocholithiasis. Despite recent evidence supporting LCBDE utility in children, there has been hesitation to adopt this surgery first (SF) approach over ERCP first (EF) due to perceived technical challenges. We compared rates of successful stone clearance during LCBDE between adult and pediatric patients to evaluate if pediatric surgeons could anticipate similar rates of successful clearance.

Background: Choledocholithiasis in children is rising and frequently managed with an endoscopy-first (EF) approach that utilizes endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) followed by laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is a resource intensive modality that often precedes ERCP to gain further assurance of choledocholithiasis prior to intervention. MRCP can lead to a longer length of stay (LOS) and strain healthcare resources.

Background: Treatment of choledocholithiasis with laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) and intraoperative cholangiogram (IOC) ± transcystic laparoscopic common bile duct exploration (LCBDE) is associated with fewer procedures and shorter length of stay (LOS) compared to preoperative endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) followed by LC. Fluoroscopy is required for both LCBDE and ERCP but fluoroscopic time (FT) and radiation dose (RD) in LCBDE has not been studied.

Methods: The Choledocholithiasis Alliance for Research, Education, and Surgery (CARES) Working Group conducted this retrospective study on pediatric patients with suspected choledocholithiasis who received IOC.

Metastasis is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. It is unclear how intratumor heterogeneity (ITH) contributes to metastasis and how metastatic cells adapt to distant tissue environments. The study of these adaptations is challenged by the limited access to patient material and a lack of experimental models that appropriately recapitulate ITH.

In this study, we explored explanations for the link between self-compassion and psychological well-being among a sample of adult childhood sexual abuse (CSA) survivors in the United States ( = 335). Informed by Neff's self-compassion theory, we hypothesized that the relationship between self-compassion and psychological well-being would be partially explained by a reduction in emotional dysregulation and trauma-related shame. We tested a parallel multiple mediation model with (a) emotion dysregulation and (b) trauma-related shame as the mediators.

Article Synopsis
  • At the universe's origin, an imbalance between matter and antimatter favored matter, but the cause of this asymmetry is still unknown.
  • High-energy nuclear collisions mimic early universe conditions, allowing researchers to create and study antimatter, which could provide insights into the matter-antimatter asymmetry.
  • The STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has successfully observed antimatter hypernuclei, measuring their lifetimes and production yields to explore their properties and compare them with theoretical predictions.
