Former studies have established that individuals with a cochlear implant (CI) for treating single-sided deafness experience improved speech processing after implantation. However, it is not clear how each ear contributes separately to improve speech perception over time at the behavioural and neural level. In this longitudinal EEG study with four different time points, we measured neural activity in response to various temporally and spectrally degraded spoken words presented monaurally to the CI and non-CI ears (5 left and 5 right ears) in 10 single-sided CI users and 10 age- and sex-matched individuals with normal hearing.

(MTB) ESX-1, a type VII secretion system, is a key virulence determinant contributing to MTB's survival within lung mononuclear phagocytes (MNPs), but its effect on MNP recruitment and differentiation remains unknown. Here, using multiple single-cell RNA sequencing techniques, we studied the role of ESX-1 in MNP heterogeneity and response in mice and murine bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDM). We found that ESX-1 is required for MTB to recruit diverse MNP subsets with high MTB burden.

Recent advancements in engineering Complex models (CIVMs) such as Blood-brain barrier (BBB) organoids offer promising platforms for preclinical drug testing. However, their application in drug development, and especially for the regulatory purposes of toxicity assessment, requires robust and reproducible techniques. Here, we developed an adapted set of orthogonal image-based tissue methods including hematoxylin and eosin staining (HE), immunohistochemistry (IHC), multiplex immunofluorescence (mIF), and Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry Imaging (MALDI-MSI) to validate CIVMs for drug toxicity assessments.

Neuroinflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction are early events in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and contribute to neurodegeneration and cognitive impairment. Evidence suggests that the inflammatory axis mediated by macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) binding to its receptor, CD74, plays an important role in many central nervous system (CNS) disorders such as AD. Our group has developed DRhQ, a novel CD74 binding construct which competitively inhibits MIF binding, blocks macrophage activation and migration into the CNS, enhances anti-inflammatory microglia cell numbers and reduces pro-inflammatory gene expression.

During the routine removal of osteosynthesis materials after surgical treatment (ORIF) of condylar head fractures (CHFs), as performed at our clinic, localised and sometimes pronounced intra-articular scarring were observed quite regularly. This prospective study therefore investigates the causes of intra-articular scarring and its impact on functionality after surgical treatment (ORIF) of condylar head fractures (CHFs). Moreover, 80/98 patients with 96/114 CHFs (ORIF between 2014 and 2024) were evaluated when performing hardware removal.

The flow convergence method includes calculation of the proximal isovelocity surface area (PISA) and is widely used to classify mitral regurgitation (MR) with echocardiography. It constitutes a primary decision factor for determination of treatment and should therefore be a robust quantification method. However, it is known for its tendency to underestimate MR and its dependence on user expertise.

In this article, the authors aim to offer a perspective on self-compassion capable of becoming part of a unified psychology; however not "from scratch", but based on what Neff (2003a, b) proposed. This is through the analysis and refinement of her theory in two stages. First, they check whether the supposed six factors exist in the constitution of self-compassion using the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) technique in a collected sample for this study (249 participants, 69.

Past research has demonstrated the association between social engagement and the maintenance of cognitive abilities. However, inconsistent definitions of social engagement have posed challenges to systematically investigate this association. This paper addresses the role of social relationships in cognitive functioning among older adults, focusing on the real-life communication indicator-length of own speech-as a measure of social activity.

Oleate hydratase (OhyA), a flavoenzyme that catalyzes the hydration of unsaturated fatty acids, has been identified in various Bacillales organisms, including those in the , , , and genera. In this study, we combine structural biology with molecular and phylogenetic analyses to investigate the evolutionary dynamics of the OhyA protein family within the Bacillales order. Our evolutionary analysis reveals two distinct OhyA clades (clade I and clade II) within Bacillales that, while sharing catalytic function, exhibit significant genomic and structural differences.

A new high energy proton radiography facility PRIOR-II (Proton Microscope for FAIR) has been designed, constructed, and successfully commissioned at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung (Darmstadt, Germany) pushing the technical boundaries of charged particle radiography with normal conducting magnets to the limits. The setup is foreseen to become a new and powerful user facility for carrying out fundamental science experiments in the fields of plasma and shock wave physics, material science, and medical physics. It will help address several unsolved scientific challenges, which require high-speed and precise non-invasive diagnostic methods capable of probing matter with up to 100 g/cm2 areal density.

Background: Maternal mental health is vital to overall well-being, particularly among expectant and postpartum Black and Latina women who experience higher stress levels and mental health challenges. Traditional healthcare systems often fail to meet these needs, underscoring the need for innovative and accessible interventions. NurtureVR, a digital maternal mental health and educational program, leverages virtual reality to offer mindfulness, relaxation, and guided imagery to support these women.

Stable ^{205}Tl ions have the lowest known energy threshold for capturing electron neutrinos (ν_{e}) of E_{ν_{e}}≥50.6 keV. The Lorandite Experiment (LOREX), proposed in the 1980s, aims at obtaining the longtime averaged solar neutrino flux by utilizing natural deposits of Tl-bearing lorandite ores.

Patients undergoing liver transplantation infrequently require extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support. However, when ECMO is required in the peritransplant period, several key considerations are required to maximize the efficacy of its support and minimize the risks of complications. This review seeks to briefly summarize the existing data supporting the use of ECMO in liver transplant patients and offers expert technical and practical advice from the authors' high-volume liver transplant center and ECMO program.

Purpose: To examine how post-concussion changes to the N200 and P300 event-related potentials (ERPs) are associated with cognitive symptoms and neurocognitive performance.
Methods: High-density electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded during a Go/No-Go task from 16 young adults within one month after their concussion and 16 matched controls. Participants were also administered the Cognitive-Linguistic Quick Test (CLQT) and self-reported concussion-like symptoms.

Cyanobacteria are the oldest photoautotrophic lineage that release oxygen during photosynthesis, an ability that possibly evolved as far as 3.5 billion years ago and changed the Earth's environment-both in water and on land. Linked to the mechanism of carbon accumulation by cyanobacteria during photosynthesis are their calcifying properties, a process of biologically mediated mineralization of CO by precipitation with calcium to CaCO.

Due to the high prevalence of childhood obesity, it is imperative to assess the relationship children's access to food retailers and obesity. However, the influence of methodological decisions on these associations has been understudied. We examined relationships between different measures of geospatial food environment (using 4 data sources, and 2 data processing methods), and BMI in a sample of low-income children in Baltimore, Maryland.
