Background: Perioperative airway management and oxygenation maintenance during central airway obstruction (CAO) treatment pose great challenges. While veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-V ECMO) shows promise as a bridge therapy, optimal implementation and management strategies remain lacking. We present our experience with V-V ECMO in CAO management from a high-volume center.

Background: Whether inherited in the context of multiple endocrine neoplasia 2B at germline level or acquired in a lifetime, all RET p.M918T (RET c.2753T>C) mutations should activate the RET tyrosine kinase receptor alike, with similar degrees of medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) progression when disparities in disease onset and multifocal growth are accounted for.

Background: Injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) and parathyroid glands (PGs) are the most common and serious complications during the transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA), and their exposure and protection are the most important factors affecting the operation time. Here, we report a novel anatomical landmark and surgical method to shorten the operative time and reduce the chance of injury to the RLN and PGs.
Methods: According to the different exposure methods of the RLN, patients were divided into the experimental group (from top to bottom, E-group) and the comparison group (from outside to inside, C-group), and 1:1 propensity score-matching (PSM) was performed.

Introduction: Recurrent or metastatic adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the head and neck is rare and highly aggressive. Due to the ineffectiveness of immune checkpoint therapies, this study aims to investigate the tumor immune microenvironment of primary tumor tissues and lung metastatic tissues and to comprehend the challenges of immunotherapy.
Methods: We analyzed RNA sequencing data and constructed immune landscapes from 25 primary tumors and 34 lung metastases.

Background: Many histopathologic prognostic markers, identified by routine hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining, have been proposed for predicting the survival of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Subsequently, several meta-analyses have been conducted on these prognostic markers. We sought to analyze the accumulated evidence from these meta-analyses.

Background: Thermal and chemical ablation techniques may consolidate recurrent metastatic cervical lymph nodes as alternatives to repeat neck dissection in thyroid cancer patients. This meta-analysis aims to compare the efficacy and safety across modalities.
Methods: Four databases were searched for studies on radiofrequency (RFA), microwave (MWA), laser (LA), and ethanol ablation (EA) treating metastatic cervical nodes from thyroid cancer.

Introduction: The anatomy of the tongue is three-dimensionally complex and is thought to play a central role in the local growth of oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC). Understanding patterns of tumor extension could improve a multimodal therapeutic approach. Thus, the main aim of this study was to provide a histological and microanatomical analysis of surgical specimens after compartmental surgery for OTSCC.

This study sought to comprehensively evaluate the diagnosis, therapeutic interventions, and outcomes of individuals afflicted with malignant parotid tumors at a tertiary care otolaryngology department in Heilbronn, Germany, spanning the years 2010-2018. The primary objective was to juxtapose this dataset with findings from analogous single and multicenter investigations. We conducted a meticulous analysis of electronic medical records pertaining to 45 patients subjected to primary parotid cancer treatment.

Recent studies have shown that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play pivotal roles in the development and progression of cancer. In the present study, we aimed to identify lncRNAs associated with lymph node metastasis in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). We analyzed data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database to screen for genes overexpressed in primary PDAC tumors with lymph node metastasis.

: There remain several challenges to the acceptance and standardization of active surveillance (AS) in patients with early thyroid cancer. The purpose of this study was to update the evidence of tumor progression outcomes in AS to support resolution of clinical concerns and to examine the effect of follow-up duration, period context such as diagnostic techniques, and tumor size at baseline on outcomes. : PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase were used to search for original articles in English until January 2024.

Background: The optimal surgical approach for localized T1 medullary thyroid cancer remains unclear. Total thyroidectomy is standard, but lobectomy and subtotal thyroidectomy may minimize mortality while maintaining oncologic control.
Methods: This retrospective analysis utilized the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results registry to identify 2702 MTC patients including 398 patients with T1N0/1M0 MTC treated with total thyroidectomy or lobectomy/subtotal thyroidectomy from 2000 to 2019.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is the second most common form of skin cancer, with an increasing global incidence. While most cases are successfully treated with surgical excision, a subset can metastasize, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. Current staging systems based on clinical and histopathological features have shown limitations in accurately predicting metastatic risk.

Background: Brain metastasis invasion pattern (BMIP) is an emerging biomarker associated with recurrence-free and overall survival in patients, and differential response to therapy in preclinical models. Currently, BMIP can only be determined from the histopathological examination of surgical specimens, precluding its use as a biomarker prior to therapy initiation. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of machine learning (ML) approaches to develop a noninvasive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based biomarker for BMIP determination.

Patients with intermediate-risk thyroid cancers may undergo treatment with radioactive iodine-131 (I-131). They often undergo a pretreatment diagnostic iodine scan that typically shows areas of physiological uptake in the stomach, bladder, parotid glands as well as thyroid-remnant uptake and sites of metastatic disease. A 48-year-old woman with intermediate-risk papillary thyroid cancer with metastases to lateral compartment lymph nodes was found to have increased retention of iodine in the medial portion of her left orbit on the diagnostic scan.

Introduction: Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-based immunotherapy targeting programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) or its ligand 1 (PD-L1) has radically changed the management of many types of solid tumors including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Many clinical trials have demonstrated that ICIs improve the survival and the quality of life of patients with advanced non oncogene NSCLC as compared to standard therapies. However, not all patients achieve a clinical benefit from this immunotherapeutic approach.

The management of head and neck melanoma (HNM) is constantly being fine-tuned in the era of immunotherapy. HNM have different metastatic patterns and a worse prognosis than melanoma of the trunk, asking for a more fine-tuned managing strategy. In clinically node-negative HNM patients, the ultrasound (US) with fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and chest X-ray (CXR) are optional modalities in the preoperative staging workup.
