Rare occurrence of pulmonary coinfection involving Aspergillus fumigatus and Nocardia cyriacigeorgica in immunocompetent patients based on NGS: A case report and literature review.

Rationale: In our search on PubMed, we found that reports of co-infections involving Aspergillus fumigatus and Nocardia cyriacigeorgica in the literature are notably scarce. Most cases have been documented in patients with compromised immune systems or underlying pulmonary conditions. In contrast, our patient did not present with any of these risk factors.

Individual, environmental and demographic factors may play a role in the prognosis of fatal and non-fatal paediatric drowning.

Aim: Drowning is a leading cause of unintentional death. Ongoing efforts are dedicated to preventing these tragic incidents. Our aim was to evaluate whether demographic, environmental and epidemiological characteristics of drowned children influence their prognosis.

Scedosporium aurianticum infection developed in 2 recipients of kidney transplants in India, acquired from the same deceased near-drowning donor. Case report: isolation of from septic blood culture following near-death drowning in lakewater.

A patient suffered a non-fatal wet drowning in a freshwater lake and developed bacteraemia several days later. Blood culture grew a Gram-negative rod that could not be identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing of the isolate identified the microbe as - an environmental microbe commonly found in freshwater.

Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis in a 4-year-old male following submersion in a manure pond.

Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) is uncommon in immunocompetent patients, but rare cases have been described after nonfatal drowning, particularly in contaminated water sources. Given subacute disease manifestations, diagnostic difficulties and the rapidly progressive nature of this organism, its mortality rate approaches 50%. Clinicians must rely on nonculture-based biomarkers and imaging to inform early diagnosis.

Fatal diving accidents in Genoa (North-West Italy) from 1968 to 2021: Forensic approach and literature review.

Scuba diving is one of the most common and practised water sport activities in Genoa, especially in the more recent years. Although scuba diving is generally considered a safe activity, this does not exclude the possibility of serious or fatal accidents from happening. This retrospective study investigates the case history of deaths resulting from diving accidents recorded by the Municipal Morgue of Genoa over a period of 53 years, specifically from 1968 to 2021.

Differential effects of two-hit models of acute and ventilator-induced lung injury on lung structure, function, and inflammation.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and acute lung injury have a diverse spectrum of causative factors including sepsis, aspiration of gastric contents, and near drowning. Clinical management of severe lung injury typically includes mechanical ventilation to maintain gas exchange which can lead to ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI). The cause of respiratory failure is acknowledged to affect the degree of lung inflammation, changes in lung structure, and the mechanical function of the injured lung.

Objectives: Non-fatal drownings confer significant morbidity and mortality in the United States. Chest radiograph (CXR) is typically used as a screening modality for interstitial edema but lacks sensitivity early after submersion. No study has evaluated lung ultrasound in assessing for pulmonary edema after submersion events and we hypothesized that lung point-of-care (POC) ultrasound can identify interstitial edema in patients presenting after non-fatal drownings.

Background: Past studies have shown a lack of consensus on the definition and terminology of drowning among experts in the field and relevant organizations. There is a need for a new look at the definition of drowning to improve the understanding of drowning events.

Methods: A literature search of seven electronic databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, CINHAL, MEDLINE, Sport Discus, and Social Sciences from 1960 to 2020 was conducted using the MESH search terms "drowning", "near-drowning", "submersion", and "immersion".

Effect of integrated intervention to prevent child drowning in rural areas of Guangdong, China: a cluster randomized controlled trial.

Background: Drowning is the leading cause of death for children under the age of 15 years in Guangdong Province, China. This serious public health issue also exists in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), which have few value-integrated intervention programs. The current study presents an integrated intervention project that aims to explore an effective pattern of prevention for child drowning in rural areas and feasibility to perform in other LMICs.

Pulmonary scedosporiosis caused by Lomentospora prolificans in a patient who is immunocompetent: A rare case report.

Infections with Scedosporium and Lomentospora species are usually found in patients who are immunodeficient, particularly in the transplant population. However, they are relatively rare in patients who are immunocompetent, which is especially useful in ruling out near-drowning and aspiration situations. Here, we report a case of a patient who is immunocompetent, with clinically suspected community-acquired pneumonia caused by Lomentospora prolificans detected by metagenomics next-generation sequencing (mNGS) and polymerase chain reaction from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid.

We describe a case of pulmonary Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection in an immunocompetent pediatric patient after a hot tub near drowning event with a literature review of pediatric MAC-associated disease after hot tub exposure.

[Risk factors analysis on high-risk behaviors of drowning among students in Shufu county, Kashgar area, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region].

To understand the incidence and risk factors of high-risk drowning behaviors among primary and middle school students in Shufu county, Kashgar area, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and provide a theoretical basis for the development of drowning prevention policies and intervention measures. Cluster random sampling method was adopted in Bulakesu and Uppal of Shufu county. A total of 28 primaries and 2 middle schools were selected, and questionnaires surveyed all the students in grades 1-8.

Virtual reality lifeguarding scenarios as a potential training solution for pool lifeguards.

Background: Ensuring that pool lifeguards develop the skills necessary to detect drowning victims is challenging given that these situations are relatively rare, unpredictable and are difficult to simulate accurately and safely. Virtual reality potentially provides a safe and ecologically valid approach to training since it offers a near-to-real visual experience, together with the opportunity to practice task-related skills and receive feedback. As a prelude to the development of a training intervention, the aim of this research was to establish the construct validity of virtual reality drowning detection tasks.

Perforating Calcinosis Cutis as a Complication of Intraosseous Fluid Infusion in the Setting of a Near-Drowning Event.

Iatrogenic calcinosis cutis represents a subset of calcinosis cutis resulting secondary to treatments or procedures. We present the first report of calcinosis cutis resulting from the intraosseous infusion and one of a few cases with associated transepidermal elimination. A previously healthy 2-year-old female presented with a new-onset unilateral shin rash 1 week following hospitalization for a near-drowning event.

Here we present newspaper accounts from the Sussex Advertiser to consider hitherto largely unknown Brighton doctors active between 1800 and 1809. This body of physicians, surgeons and apothecaries comprised Brighton's 'Gentlemen of the [medical] Faculty', whom the newspaper also dubbed the 'Disciples of Aesclepius'. Members are considered under three broad categories.
