Article Synopsis
  • * Conducted at Nawaloka Hospital PLC, the study analyzed data from 240 dengue patients, measuring IPF% on days 2 and 3, which was found to correlate with platelet recovery by day 7 and 8.
  • * The results suggest that higher IPF% values on these days can serve as a promising predictive tool for early recovery from dengue-related thrombocytopenia, with notable differences in IPF% between severe and mild cases.

Trans R Soc Trop Med Hyg

December 2021

Nawaloka Hospital Research and Education Foundation, Nawaloka Hospitals, Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a respiratory viral infection, has affected more than 78 million individuals worldwide as of the end of December 2020. Previous studies reported that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 1 and Middle East respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus infections may affect the gastrointestinal (GI) system. In this review we outline the important GI manifestations of COVID-19 and discuss the possible underlying pathophysiological mechanisms and their diagnosis and management.

In recent times, star fruit (Averrhoa carambola) nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity have been increasingly reported, both in individuals with pre-existing renal disease and those with previously normal renal function. We summarise the clinical findings of star fruit toxicity in humans and outline the important pathogenetic insights provided by animal studies. Google Scholar, EMBASE, Scopus and PubMed were searched from 1995 through July 2020 for case reports/series on renal or neurological manifestations of star fruit toxicity in humans and mechanisms of star fruit toxicity in animal studies.

Hematological Abnormalities in COVID-19: A Narrative Review.

Am J Trop Med Hyg

February 2021

5Nawaloka Hospital Research and Education Foundation, Nawaloka Hospitals, Colombo, Sri Lanka.

COVID-19 is caused by SARS-CoV-2. Although pulmonary manifestations have been identified as the major symptoms, several hematological abnormalities have also been identified. This review summarizes the reported hematological abnormalities (changes in platelet, white blood cell, and hemoglobin, and coagulation/fibrinolytic alterations), explores their patho-mechanisms, and discusses its management.

Introduction: Hypoparathyroidism, which is a common complication following total thyroidectomy can be transient in majority and permanent in 1.5% of the patients and usually occurs secondary to an inadvertent removal of parathyroid glands, mechanical or thermal injury or disruption of the vasculature. In some patients, it is observed that symptoms of hypocalcemia can occur for the first time several years after the surgery, which is known as "delayed hypoparathyroidism.

Effects of the Lysulin™ supplementation on pre-diabetes: A randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

Diabetes Metab Syndr

July 2021

Nawaloka Hospital Research and Education Foundation (NHREF), Nawaloka Hospitals PLC, Colombo, Sri Lanka. Electronic address:

Background And Aims: Diabetes is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Recent studies have demonstrated that nutraceutical products have beneficial effects in diabetes. Present study aims to investigate whether a product (Lysulin™) containing amino acid lysine, micronutrient zinc and vitamin C will have beneficial effects in pre-diabetes.

Background: The role of steroids in dengue infection (DI) remains uncertain.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted on patients ≥18 y of age diagnosed with DI based on positivity for dengue non-structural antigen 1 or immunoglobulin M between October 2017 and November 2018.

Results: Hydrocortisone was administered to 106 of 406 patients.

Background: The early identification of patients at risk of severe dengue infection (DI) is critical to guide clinical management. Non-structural antigen 1 (NS-1), immunoglobulin M (IgM) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) are used routinely for the diagnosis of DI.

Objectives: We sought to evaluate whether positivity for NS-1, IgM and IgG individually or together is predictive of severe complications of DI.

Background: Early identification of patients at risk of severe dengue disease (DD) is critical to guide its management. We evaluated whether the atypical lymphocyte count (ALC), generated from the Sysmex automated full blood count analyzer, is predictive of severe thrombocytopenia secondary to Dengue infection.

Methods: We prospectively collected data on patients admitted with DD between December 2017 and October 2018.

Introduction: The early identification of patients at risk of severe dengue infection (DI) is critical to guide clinical management. There is currently no validated laboratory test which can predict severe complications of DI. The Atypical lymphocyte count (ALC) is a research parameter generated at no extra cost when an automated Full Blood Count (FBC) is performed.

Background: Diabetes mellitus is rapidly becoming one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Preventive measures have become important, especially in the South Asian region and other parts of the world where diabetes is becoming increasingly prevalent. We postulate that a product containing amino acid lysine, micronutrient zinc and vitamin C will have beneficial effects on glycemic control and disease progression in patients with pre-diabetes and we aim to evaluate this hypothesis using a phase II/III randomized double-blind controlled clinical trial design.

Chylothorax is a rare complication after cardiac surgery but is associated with morbidity and mortality. The most common cause of chylothorax is damage to or avulsion of thoracic duct by electrocautery during left internal thoracic artery harvesting for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. We describe a case of chylothorax after off-pump CABG, which was successfully treated with thoracostomy tube drainage, withholding of oral intake, total parenteral nutrition and subcutaneous octreotide, a somatostatin analog, and chemical pleurodesis.

A rare presentation of an acute abdomen: an ileal diverticular perforation.

BMC Res Notes

June 2017

Nawaloka Hospitals Research and Educational Centre, Nawaloka Hospitals PLC, No. 23, Deshamanya H.K. Dharmadasa Mw, Colombo 02, Sri Lanka.

Background: This case report highlights the value of prompt intervention of diagnostic laparoscopy in a patient suspects of having an acute abdomen due to an intestinal perforation, where there is a limitation of performing Contrast Enhanced Computed Tomography of abdomen. A previously healthy young adult presenting with an acute abdomen due to a spontaneous ileal perforation, without any associated risk factors is a rare clinical entity in a developing country. Therefore, entertaining an early diagnosis will possibly prevent a fatal consequence.

Background: Schwannomas are benign nerve sheath tumors and are most frequently encountered as soft tissue tumors of peripheral nerves of the head and neck or the extensor extremities. Osseous involvement is very uncommon with fewer than 200 cases described in the world literature, the majority of which arise in the skull (including mandible), vertebrae, and sacrum. Long bone involvement is highly unusual and of the approximately 20 cases described thus far, only five have been documented to arise in the femur.
