Hepatic steatosis, metabolic dysfunction and risk of mortality: findings from a multinational prospective cohort study.

BMC Med

June 2024

Nutrition and Metabolism Branch, International Agency for Research On Cancer (IARC-WHO), 25 Avenue Tony Garnier, Lyon, 69007, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are linked to higher overall and cause-specific mortality risks, particularly cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD).
  • A study involving 15,784 participants found that a higher Fatty Liver Index (FLI), indicating more severe liver fat accumulation, correlated with increased mortality rates, especially for CVD.
  • Individuals with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and metabolic syndrome show heightened mortality risks, suggesting the need for greater awareness and management of these conditions.

Resistin is a polypeptide implicated in inflammatory processes, and as such could be linked to colorectal carcinogenesis. In case-control studies, higher resistin levels have been found in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients compared to healthy individuals. However, evidence for the association between pre-diagnostic resistin and CRC risk is scarce.

Mycotoxin Exposure and Renal Cell Carcinoma Risk: An Association Study in the EPIC European Cohort.

Nutrients

August 2022

Nutrition and Metabolism Branch, International Agency for Research on Cancer, World Health Organization, 150 Cours Albert Thomas, 69008 Lyon, France.

Background: Mycotoxins have been suggested to contribute to a spectrum of adverse health effects in humans, including at low concentrations. The recognition of these food contaminants being carcinogenic, as co-occurring rather than as singularly present, has emerged from recent research. The aim of this study was to assess the potential associations of single and multiple mycotoxin exposures with renal cell carcinoma risk in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort.

Milk intake and incident stroke and CHD in populations of European descent: a Mendelian randomisation study.

Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care, University Medical Center Utrecht, University Utrecht, Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Higher milk intake has been associated with a lower stroke risk, but not with risk of CHD. Residual confounding or reverse causation cannot be excluded. Therefore, we estimated the causal association of milk consumption with stroke and CHD risk through instrumental variable (IV) and gene-outcome analyses.

Population-based cancer registry data from three Spanish areas were used to assess the patterns of care and adherence to guidelines for cutaneous malignant melanoma. We included 934 cases diagnosed in 2009-2013. Completeness of the pathology reports, imaging for detecting distant metastasis and the use of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) were analysed.
