The porous-coated anatomic (PCA) total hip was a first-generation cementless implant system introduced in 1983 for both primary and revision total hip arthroplasty. Between February 1983 and June 1989, 219 uncemented PCA total hips were implanted in 194 patients as part of a multisurgeon, single-institution, prospective study. Short-term follow-up data were available on 212 hips at an average of 21.

Objective: To determine current trends among American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology members on the treatment of various stages of lymphatic malformation (LM) with an emphasis on tongue management.
Methods: We queried the members on practice demographics, number of LMs and LM-Mac treated, preferred treatment of different stages of LM and Lm-Mac, indications for LM-Mac tongue treatment, preferred method of surgical tongue reduction, and medical management of acutely enlarging LMs and LM-Mac.
Results: 39/329 (12%) American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology members responded to the survey.

Background: Reports of community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) and in otherwise healthy patients without obvious risk factors have been increasing in frequency. Described herein is a cluster of cases of CA-MRSA USA300 strains in an NICU affecting infants, health-care workers and the health-care workers' families.
Methods: Infants and health-care workers with infection and colonization due to MRSA between 1 January 2004 and 30 June 2005 in a tertiary care center NICU in San Antonio, TX were studied.

Background: Rupture of the pectoralis major muscle is a rare clinical entity that is becoming more common due to the increasing popularity of weightlifting and recreational sports. Due to the rarity of this condition, it may be missed at initial presentation and inappropriately treated, potentially leading to increased disability.
Objectives: This case highlights the mechanism of injury, clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of rupture of the pectoralis major.

Maternal antibody-mediated fetal red blood cell destruction secondary to non-D Rhesus (Rh) antibodies is a significant cause of hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN). Here, we report a rare case of severe HDN associated with maternal antibody to Rh e. In addition to severe anemia, the infant developed thrombocytopenia, conjugated hyperbilirubinemia and cholelithiasis.

Objective: Long-distance air transport (LDAT) of infants with pneumoperitoneum for pediatric surgical evaluation has not been previously reported. We examined whether extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants with and without pneumoperitoneum would tolerate transport differently.
Study Design: A retrospective cohort study was conducted comparing ELBW infants diagnosed with pneumoperitoneum to other ELBW infants transported>2000 miles by a trained team from a US Department of Defense tertiary care neonatal intensive care unit in Okinawa, Japan.

Blast and fragment injuries of the musculoskeletal system are the most frequently encountered wounds in modern warfare. Most injuries to the musculoskeletal system involve so-called secondary blast injuries in which casing fragments and other debris become flying projectiles. Nonoperative treatment of selected wounds caused by small-fragment debris has been successful but remains controversial.

The use of lasers for hair depilation has become a common modality for physicians in the recent past. As new lasers are developed, the complex mechanisms affecting this form of treatment are now under close investigation. The long-pulsed alexandrite laser functioning at a wavelength of 755 nm has recently been added to the armamentarium of health care providers to assist patients with unwanted body hair.

Isolated organisms from two common Indo-Pacific marine animals (Echinometra mathaei urchins and Acanthaster planci sea stars) likely to cause puncture wounds to recreational beachcombers, diverse, or operational military forces during amphibious assaults demonstrate why practitioners should consider their first choice for potential antibiotic therapy differently from their usual favorite antibiotics. The effects of thiosulfate-citrate-bile-sucrose (TCBS) agar, varying salt concentrations in the standard media, and comparison of room temperature incubation versus use of the 30 degrees C (86 degrees F) incubator are reviewed. The yield of pathogenic marine bacteria is increased if TCBS agar is used and more than one temperature is used for incubation.

The percutaneous absorption of hydrocortisone and testosterone was studied following their application to the vulvar and ventral forearm regions of pre- and post-menopausal women. Percutaneous absorption of hydrocortisone was significantly greater in vulvar skin than forearm skin in both pre- and post-menopausal women (P < 0.05, respectively), whereas the percutaneous absorption of testosterone was significantly increased (P < 0.
