Individual susceptibility to pulmonary oxygen toxicity (POtox) is highly variable and currently lacks a reliable biomarker for predicting pulmonary hyperoxic stress. As nitric oxide (NO) is involved in many respiratory system processes and functions, we aimed to determine if expired nitric oxide (FNO) levels can provide an indication of POtox susceptibility in humans. Optimizing combat readiness for military surgeons without trauma fellowship training: Engaging the "voluntary faculty" model.

J Trauma Acute Care Surg

August 2023

From the Providence Regional Medical Center, Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, Everett, Washington (J.Y., S.S., J.G.); United States Navy, Naval Hospital Bremerton, Bremerton, Washington (J.P., G.J., B.O.); MedStar Washington Hospital, Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery (J.W.), Washington, DC; Madigan Army Medical Center, Joint Base Lewis McChord (G.P.), Washington; and Oregon Health and Sciences University, Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery (M.S.), Portland, Oregon.

Background: Appropriate operative volume remains a critical component in mitigating surgical atrophy and maintaining clinical competency. The initiation of military-civilian surgical partnerships (MCPs) has been proposed for addressing knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) metrics to address concerns over operational readiness and the low acuity experienced by military surgeons. This study investigates the first partnership for Navy surgical staff at a nonacademic Military Treatment Facility (MTF) with a regional academic Army Military Treatment Facility (AMTF) and a civilian, nonacademic level II trauma center devised to improve operational readiness for attending surgeons.

The Cotton osteotomy, as described in 1936 by Frederic Cotton, consisted of a medial cuneiform opening base wedge osteotomy. This Cotton osteotomy served to restore the "triangle of support" of the foot. In his address to the New England Surgical Society, he described this osteotomy as being multipurpose; it can be used for plantarflexion in hallux valgus surgery and has use in hallux rigidus conditions.

Purpose: Complications associated with use of dual-lumen venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) cannulas are of concern in pediatric patients. While the risk of atrial perforation is believed to be higher with bicaval cannulas, direct comparison of complication rate between atrial and bicaval cannulas has not been conducted in this population.

Methods: A retrospective review was conducted at a free-standing children's hospital of all patients 0-18 years old, placed on VV-ECMO with a dual-lumen cannula from January 2009 to December 2018.

An Educational Intervention to Raise Awareness of Contraceptive Options Among Young People.

J Womens Health (Larchmt)

February 2022

Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, School of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco, San Francisco, California, USA.

Young people in the United States know little about contraceptive options available to them, although method use is sensitive to individual preferences, and method switching is common. For young people to gain reproductive autonomy, a first step is to be aware of different contraceptives, including hormonal and nonhormonal methods. We tested whether an educational intervention delivered on community college campuses was effective in increasing contraceptive awareness.

Military civilian partnerships: International proposals for bridging the Walker Dip.

J Trauma Acute Care Surg

August 2020

From the Naval Hospital Bremerton (G.J.), Naval Base Kitsap, Washington; Trauma, Lung and Military Surgeon Trauma Centre ETZ Tilburg (T.E.), The Netherlands; Institute for Clinical Sciences, Department of Surgery, Sahlgrenska Academy, Gothenburg University (P.O.), Sweden; Hamad General Hospital and Hamad Medical Corporation, (R.P.), Doha, Qatar; Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center, (M.B.A.), Richmond, Virginia; and University of California Davis Medical Center (J.G.), Sacramento, California.

The Walker Dip refers to the cycle of the improvement of care for the battle injured soldier over the course of a conflict, followed by the decline in the skills needed to provide this care during peacetime, and the requisite need to relearn those skills during the next conflict. As the operational tempo of the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq has declined, concerns have arisen regarding whether US military surgeons are prepared to meet the demands of future conflicts. This problem is not unique to the US military, and allied nations have taken creative steps to address the Walker Dip in their own surgical communities.

Acquired progressive kinking of the hair (APK) is a rare disorder that presents at any age and is infrequently presented in the literature. This diagnosis has been used to describe similar hair changes, though there are significant differences in presentation, population, and individual clinical features. Histologic analysis of hair shafts aids in diagnosis owing to commonly reported features such as irregular twisting, bending, and grooving of hair shafts with polygonal shapes on cross-section.
