Background: There are little long-term health data, particularly in terms of body composition and development of metabolic syndromes, to help surgeons to guide the decision between limb salvage and amputation in patients with limb-threatening trauma. The purpose of this study was to compare long-term health outcomes after high-energy lower-extremity trauma between patients who underwent attempted flap-based limb salvage or amputation.
Methods: We performed a retrospective review of servicemembers with a minimum 10-year follow-up who underwent flap-based limb salvage followed by unilateral amputation or continued limb salvage after combat-related, lower-extremity trauma between 2005 and 2011.

In this work, a series of water-soluble fluorine-functionalized chitooligosaccharide derivatives were synthesized by conjugating nicotinic acid to chitooligosaccharide via nicotinylation reaction, followed by nucleophilic reaction with ethyl bromide, benzyl bromide and fluorobenzyl bromides. Synthesized derivatives were identified structurally by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. In addition, the antibacterial activities of chitooligosaccharide derivatives against several disease-causing bacteria were assessed by the broth dilution method and Kirby-Bauer method, the mycelium growth rate method was used to assessing the antifungal properties of samples against three plant-threatening fungi.

Background: Patterns of survey response and the characteristics associated with response over time in longitudinal studies are important to discern for the development of tailored retention efforts aimed at minimizing response bias. The Millennium Cohort Study, the largest and longest running cohort study of military personnel and veterans, is designed to examine the long-term health effects of military service and experiences and thus relies on continued participant survey responses over time. Here, we describe the response rates for follow-up survey data collected over 15 years and identify characteristics associated with follow-up survey response and mode of response (paper vs.

Resistant bacterial infection remains a severe public health threat, and conventional antibiotic drugs work poorly in effectively treating infectious diseases. Here, we developed gallium-based nanodots (Ga NDs), consisting of specific disruption of bacterial iron ability, to treat multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria-infected diseases. The Ga NDs significantly suppress the proliferation of two typical MDR bacteria strains ( and ESBL ) compared with clinically used antibacterial drugs, including penicillin and levofloxacin.

Acute renal failure with severe loin pain and patchy renal ischemia after anaerobic exercise (ALPE) is a rare cause of exertional acute kidney injury. The proposed mechanism of injury in ALPE is renovascular spasm, in the setting of oxidative stress and muscular damage, which creates a characteristic wedge-shaped infarction pattern on delayed imaging. Patients present with nausea, vomiting, loin or abdominal pain, and fatigue within 1-2 days of anaerobic exercise, associated with an acute rise in serum creatinine, which generally plateaus within 3 days.

Microbiomes involve complex microbial communities wherein the micro-organisms interact with one another as well as their associated hosts or environmental niches. Much of the characterisation of these communities and the associations have been achieved through 'omics' technologies, such as metagenomics, metaproteomics and metametabolomics, and model systems. Recent research in host-associated microbiomes has been aimed at understanding the role microbes may play in host fitness or conversely how host activities/conditions may perturb the microbial community, which can further affect host health.

Sexual trauma (ST), which includes both sexual harassment and sexual assault, is associated with a variety of adverse mental and physical health outcomes in military and civilian populations. However, little is known about whether certain individual or military attributes or prior experiences may modify the relationship between recent ST and mental or physical health outcomes. Data from a longitudinal cohort study of current and former military members were used to examine whether individual and military factors modify the association between recent ST and health outcomes (posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, multiple somatic symptoms, and insomnia).

Neutralizing antibodies exert a potent inhibitory effect on viral entry; however, they are less effective in therapeutic models than in prophylactic models, presumably because of their limited efficacy in eliminating virus-producing cells via Fc-mediated cytotoxicity. Herein, we present a SARS-CoV-2 spike-targeting bispecific T-cell engager (S-BiTE) strategy for controlling SARS-CoV-2 infection. This approach blocks the entry of free virus into permissive cells by competing with membrane receptors and eliminates virus-infected cells via powerful T cell-mediated cytotoxicity.

To date, no study has surveyed a population of military orthopedic surgeons on treatment preferences for military service members (SMs) with FNSF.
Questions: We aim to evaluate the extent of clinical equipoise that exists in the management of these injuries, hypothesizing that there would be consensus in the factors dictating surgical and non-surgical intervention for FNSF.
