Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent for Chagas disease, is widely distributed in the Americas. Its hosts are humans and wild and domestic mammals, and its vectors are triatomine insects. Studies have indicated that domestic dogs are sentinel animals in the epidemiology of Chagas disease in endemic regions, including states in the Legal Amazon region of Brazil.

Sepsis is a complex infectious syndrome in which neutrophil participation is crucial for patient survival. Neutrophils quickly sense and eliminate the pathogen by using different effector mechanisms controlled by metabolic processes. The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway is an important route for metabolic regulation, and its role in neutrophil metabolism has not been fully understood yet, especially the importance of mTOR complex 2 (mTORC2) in the neutrophil effector functions.

Inadequate disposition and long period for degradation of Petroleum-derived polymers promote damages in the environment, which could be minimized by the use of biodegradable polymers such as starch and cellulose. Films of thermoplastic corn starch (TPS) and bacterial cellulose (BC) were used to produce sandwich panel biocomposite. RXD, SEM and FTIR were used to verify the transformation of TPS from native corn starch.

Despite the growing interest of the automotive industry in using recycled polymers, their undesired odor is limiting their application in vehicles' interior components. To get deeper insights into its causes, this study aimed at characterizing the odor of post-consumer and recycled automotive polypropylene with different contents of talc and an anti-fogging additive. Samples were evaluated by different sensory methods currently applied by the automotive industry (GMW 3205 and VDA 270), which confirmed, that they are not feasible for reuse in interior automotive applications.

Methylation patterns established and maintained at CpG sites may be altered by single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within these sites and may affect the regulation of nearby genes. Our aims were to: 1) identify and generate a database of SNPs potentially subject to epigenetic control by DNA methylation via their involvement in creating, removing or displacing CpG sites (meSNPs), and; 2) investigate the association of these meSNPs with CpG islands (CGIs), and with methylation profiles of DNA extracted from tissues from cattle with divergent feed efficiencies detected using MIRA-Seq. Using the variant annotation for 56,969,697 SNPs identified in Run5 of the 1000 Bull Genomes Project and the UMD3.

To evaluate whether a recombinant serine protease inhibitor (rBmTI-A) modulates inflammation in an experimental model of chronic allergic lung inflammation. Balb/c mice were divided into four groups: SAL (saline), OVA (sensitized with ovalbumin), SAL + rBmTI-A (control treated with rBmTI-A) and OVA + rBmTI-A (sensitized with ovalbumin and treated with rBmTI-A). The animals received an intraperitoneal injection of saline or ovalbumin, according to the group.

Functional polymeric nanoparticles have attracted attention for different biomedical applications, including drug delivery. Poloxamers (PL), a synthetic copolymers of poly(ethyleneoxide)-b-poly(propylene oxide)-b-poly(ethylene oxide), that exhibit thermoreversible behavior in aqueous solutions. Physicochemical properties of Oleic Acid-Poloxamer (OA-PL) organogel for intravaginal controlled Voriconazole (VRC) delivery were assessed using three different oils (isopropyl myristate - IPM, isopropyl palmitate - IPP, and oleic acid - OA, in order to select the most suitable oil phase for increasing the solubility of the drug and its dispersion in the final aqueous phase.

Textile manufacturing industries generate large amounts of viscose yarn waste (VW) that causes serious environmental pollution. In this study, VW was used as raw material to successfully extract nanocellulose (NC) in a facile one-step extraction process, without any pretreatment. Different hydrolysis reaction times (5-60 min) were employed, and the extracted material was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopies, atomic force microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis.

Local administration of antimicrobial agents is the first therapeutic approach for the treatment of Candida albicans infections. The duration of contact of formulations with the vaginal mucosa is critical for therapeutic efficacy. This study describes the development of organogels employing an oil phase composed of oleic acid (OA) and an aqueous phase consisting of the poloxamer PL, alone or in association with PL, together with 0.

Microtubules are important drug targets in tumor cells, owing to their role in supporting and determining the cell shape, organelle movement and cell division. The complementarity-determining regions (CDRs) of immunoglobulins have been reported to be a source of anti-tumor peptide sequences, independently of the original antibody specificity for a given antigen. We found that, the anti-Lewis B mAb light-chain CDR1 synthetic peptide Rb44, interacted with microtubules and induced depolymerization, with subsequent degradation of actin filaments, leading to depolarization of mitochondrial membrane-potential, increase of ROS, cell cycle arrest at G2/M, cleavage of caspase-9, caspase-3 and PARP, upregulation of Bax and downregulation of Bcl-2, altogether resulting in intrinsic apoptosis of melanoma cells.

Alzheimer disease (AD), which is associated with chronic and progressive neurodegeneration, is the most prevalent cause of dementia linked to aging. Among the risk factors for AD, age stands as the greatest one, with the vast majority of people with AD being 65 years of age or older. Nevertheless, the pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying the link between aging and the development of AD, although not completely understood, might reveal important aspects for the understanding of this pathology.

Mounting an effective immune response against cancer requires the activation of innate and adaptive immune cells. Metastatic melanoma is the most aggressive form of skin cancer. While immunotherapies have shown a remarkable success in melanoma treatment, patients develop resistance by mechanisms that include the establishment of an immune suppressive tumor microenvironment.

The present work aims at investigating the mechanism of action of the Rb9 peptide, which contains the VCDR 3 sequence of anti-sodium-dependent phosphate transport protein 2B (NaPi2B) monoclonal antibody RebMab200 and displayed antitumor properties. Short peptides corresponding to the hypervariable complementarity-determining regions (CDRs) of immunoglobulins have been associated with antimicrobial, antiviral, immunomodulatory and antitumor activities regardless of the specificity of the antibody. We have shown that the CDR derived peptide Rb9 induced substrate hyperadherence, inhibition of cell migration and matrix invasion in melanoma and other tumor cell lines.

Background: The testis-specific isoform of angiotensin-converting enzyme (tACE) is exclusively expressed in germ cells during spermatogenesis. Although the exact role of tACE in male fertility is unknown, it clearly plays a critical function in spermatogenesis. The dipeptidase domain of tACE is identical to the C-terminal catalytic domain of somatic ACE (sACE).

The first cleavage divisions and preimplantation embryonic development are supported by mRNA and proteins synthesized and stored during oogenesis. Thus, mRNA molecules of maternal origin decrease and embryonic development becomes gradually dependent on expression of genetic information derived from the embryonic genome. However, it is still unclear what the role of the sperm cell is during this phase and whether the absence of the sperm cell during the artificial oocyte activation affects subsequent embryonic development.
