In this paper, we have compiled and reviewed the most recent literature, published in print or online from January 2010 to December 2012, relating to the human exposure, environmental distribution, behaviour, fate and concentration time trends of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) flame retardants, in order to establish their current trends and priorities for future study. More data are now becoming available for remote areas not previously studied, Indian Ocean islands, for example. Decreasing time trends for penta-mix PBDE congeners were seen for soils in northern Europe, sewage sludge in Sweden and the USA, carp from a US river, trout from three of the Great Lakes and in Arctic and UK marine mammals and many birds, but increasing time trends continue in polar bears and some birds at high trophic levels in northern Europe.

Photolysis of brominated flame retardants in textiles exposed to natural sunlight.

Photolytic transformation profiles of technical hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and technical decabromodiphenyl ether (DecaBDE) in flame-retarded textiles exposed to natural sunlight were compared. Textiles that contained approximately 4% HBCDs by weight showed no substantial loss of any of the HBCD diastereomers during the entire exposure period (371 days), indicating that they were resistant to sunlight, that is, that debromination and isomerization of HBCD diastereomers did not occur under the experimental conditions. Exposure of a textile treated with technical DecaBDE resulted in the formation of polybrominated dibenzofurans (PBDFs) as products of photodecomposition of polybrominated diphenyl ethers present in the technical DecaBDE.

We studied distribution of heavy metals [lead (Pb), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn)] in surface soil at an electronic-waste (e-waste) recycling workshop near Metro Manila in the Philippines to evaluate the pollution size (spot size, small area or the entire workshop), as well as to assess heavy metal transport into the surrounding soil environment. On-site length-of-stride-scale (~70 cm) measurements were performed at each surface soil point using field-portable X-ray fluorescence (FP-XRF). The surface soil at the e-waste recycling workshop was polluted with Cu, Zn and Pb, which were distributed discretely in surface soil.

Coral bleaching, triggered by elevated sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) has caused a decline in coral cover and changes in the abundances of corals on reefs worldwide. Coral decline can be exacerbated by the effects of local stressors like turbidity, yet some reefs with a natural history of turbidity can support healthy and resilient coral communities. However, little is known about responses of coral communities to bleaching events on anthropogenically turbid reefs as a result of recent (post World War II) terrestrial runoff.

Unlabelled: The 'ozone (O3)-responsive transcriptome' behavior in the panicles and grains of rice plant was studied individually through high-throughput oligo-DNA microarray technique. O3 differentially and separately regulated 620 and 130 genes in the panicles and grains. Among the O3-responsive genes, 176 and 444 genes were up- and down-regulated in panicle compared to 24 and 106 genes in grain, respectively.

Using Gasteiger's partial equalization of orbital electronegativity (PEOE) method, we constructed ecotoxicity prediction equations based on two-dimensional descriptors for α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds. After examining electrostatic effects on the calculated ecotoxicities of 10 α,β-unsaturated ketones and aldehydes (A-group compounds) by using the Mulliken atomic charges on the carbonyl oxygen atoms, we investigated the efficacy of the PEOE descriptors for the same 10 compounds and the correlation between the PEOE descriptors and the Mulliken charge. We then constructed QSAR models for acute fish and Daphnia toxicities by using the PEOE descriptors for acrylic acids and compounds with acrylate-like substructures (CH-group compounds).

Agricultural landscapes, including paddies, play an important role in maintaining biodiversity, but this biodiversity has been under the threat of toxic agro-chemicals. Our knowledge about how aquatic communities react to, and recover from, pesticides, particularly in relation to their residues, is deficient, despite the importance of such information for realistic environmental impact assessment of pesticides. The cumulative ecological impacts on aquatic paddy communities and their recovery processes after two successive annual applications of two systemic insecticides, imidacloprid and fipronil, were monitored between mid-May and mid-September each year.

To understand the key factor for fish toxicity of 11 α,β-unsaturated carbonyl aldehydes and ketones, we used quantum chemical calculations to investigate their Michael reactions with methanethiol or glutathione. We used two reaction schemes, with and without an explicit water molecule (Scheme-1wat and Scheme-0wat, respectively), to account for the effects of a catalytic water molecule on the reaction pathway. Wolbachia endosymbionts are widespread among insects and other arthropods, often causing cytoplasmic incompatibility and other reproductive phenotypes in their hosts. Recently, possibilities of Wolbachia-mediated pest control and management have been proposed, and the bean beetles of the subfamily Bruchinae are known as serious pests of harvested and stored beans worldwide. The validity of chemical reaction mechanistic domains defined by skin sensitisation in the Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) ecotoxicity system, KAshinhou Tools for Ecotoxicity (KATE), March 2009 version, has been assessed and an external validation of the current KATE system carried out. In the case of the fish end-point, the group of chemicals with substructures reactive to skin sensitisation always exhibited higher root mean square errors (RMSEs) than chemicals without reactive substructures under identical C- or log P-judgements in KATE. However, in the case of the Daphnia end-point this was not so, and the group of chemicals with reactive substructures did not always have higher RMSEs: the Schiff base mechanism did not function as a high error detector.

Simulation procedure integrated with multi-scale in horizontally regional-urban-point levels and in vertically atmosphere-surface-unsaturated-saturated layers, was newly developed in order to predict the effect of urban geometry and anthropogenic exhaustion on the hydrothermal changes in the atmospheric/land and the interfacial areas of the Japanese megalopolis. The simulated results suggested that the latent heat flux in new water-holding pavement (consisting of porous asphalt and water-holding filler made of steel by-products based on silica compound) has a strong impact on hydrologic cycle and cooling temperature in comparison with the observed heat budget. We evaluated the relationship between the effect of groundwater use as a heat sink to tackle the heat island and the effect of infiltration on the water cycle in the urban area.

The KAshinhou Tool for Ecotoxicity (KATE) system, including ecotoxicity quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models, was developed by the Japanese National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) using the database of aquatic toxicity results gathered by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment and the US EPA fathead minnow database. In this system chemicals can be entered according to their one-dimensional structures and classified by substructure. The QSAR equations for predicting the toxicity of a chemical compound assume a linear correlation between its log P value and its aquatic toxicity.

The anaerobic biological treatment of sucrose-based, low-strength wastewater was investigated in expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactors at low temperatures over a 300-day trial period. During the trial, the operating temperature was lowered in a stepwise manner from 20 degrees C to 5 degrees C. As a result, the reactors exhibited sufficient performances until 10 degrees C operation.

A pilot scale fluidized bed bioreactor to control the cyanobacterium, Microcystis, was tested in an outdoor experimental pond system (28 m3) over a 57 day period. The pond system was inoculated with a wild bloom of Microcystis, and the bioreactor was preinoculated with an oligochaete, Aeolosoma hemprichi, which is known to prey on colonial Microcystis. This and other Microcystis predators such as the rotifer, Philodina erythrophthalma were observed to colonize the bioreactor during the experiment.

Photodebromination of technical decabromodiphenyl ether (DecaBDE) incorporated into high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) and TV casings was compared under natural sunlight conditions with that of technical decabromodiphenyl ethane (DeBDethane). BDE 209 in pulverized HIPS+DecaBDE samples degraded with a half-life of 51 days. In contrast, no marked loss of DeBDethane occurred throughout the experimental period of 224 days.

The NIES Integrated Catchment-based Eco-hydrology (NICE) model was expanded to include the density current and solute-transport process of groundwater in the Kanto Plain and to incorporate the effects of water table and tidal fluctuations around the eutrophic Tokyo Bay, Japan (NICE-SEA). The simulation reproduced excellently the observed values of river discharge and groundwater level in the catchment. The simulated groundwater level shows a minus value (below the sea level) around the Tokyo metropolitan area because of excessive withdrawal around the urban area in the past.

Bark included within the trunk of a 200-year-old Japanese cedar tree harvested in Yakushima Island, Japan, a World Natural Heritage Site located 150 km south of mainland Japan and 800 km east of Shanghai, China, was analysed for trace metals by ICP-MS providing a chronology of atmospheric pollution. The concentration of V, As and Pb in decadal sections of the bark pocket increased 30 to 50 fold from 1900-09 to 1960-69, indicating increased atmospheric deposition of these metals. The trend coincided with the establishment and expansion of heavy industries in Kyushu, Japan, resulting in locally high levels of air pollution.
