Outcomes in randomized controlled trials of therapeutic interventions for multiple myeloma: A systematic review.

Crit Rev Oncol Hematol

December 2024

Clinical Research and Evidence-Based Medicine Unit, Second Medical Department, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, Greece; Harris Manchester College, University of Oxford, Oxford, UK.

Article Synopsis
  • Many clinical trials for multiple myeloma focus on surrogate endpoints rather than patient-important outcomes, which are crucial for assessing treatment efficacy.
  • A systematic review of 624 randomized controlled trials found that the most common primary outcomes were disease response, progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS), with OS being emphasized relatively less.
  • The study also revealed that trials funded by the pharmaceutical industry were significantly more likely to prioritize PFS, raising concerns about potential biases in reporting outcomes.

Objective: Tissue-resident memory cells (Trm) are a subset of T cells residing persistently and long-term within specific tissues that contribute to persistent inflammation and tissue damage. We characterised the phenotype and function of Trm and the role of CD103 in primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS).

Methods: In both pSS and non-pSS sicca syndrome patients, we examined Trm frequency, cytokine production in salivary glands (SG) and peripheral blood (PB).

Purpose: To explore the value of measuring maternal serum PLGF in the prediction of the outcome of small for gestational age fetuses (SGA).

Methods: Singleton pregnancies referred with suspicion of SGA in the third trimester were included if they had: no indication for nor signs of imminent delivery, fetal abdominal circumference (AC) at or below the 10th centile and/or estimated fetal weight (EFW) at or below the 10th centile and/or umbilical artery pulsatility index (Umb-PI) at or above the 90th centile for gestation. Women with pre-eclampsia at presentation were excluded.

Postgraduate Program "Fetal Maternal Medicine", National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, School of Medicine, Greece; Second Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Aretaieio Hospital, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens - Faculty of Medicine, Athens, Greece. Electronic address:

Aims: To assess the prevalence variation in pregnancy outcomes of the different phenotypes of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).

Materials: Cohort, cross sectional and case control studies grouping together pregnant women with GDM, based on the results of oral glucose tolerance test(OGTT) and reporting pregnancy outcomes in each group, were included. The primary outcomes were (i)large for gestational age and ii)hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP).

The discrimination of ovarian lesions presents a significant problem in everyday clinical practice with ultrasonography appearing to be the most effective diagnostic technique. The aim of our study was to externally evaluate the performance of different diagnostic models when applied by examiners with various levels of experience. This was a diagnostic accuracy study including women who were admitted for adnexal masses, between July 2018 and April 2021, to a Greek tertiary oncology center.

Arch Gynecol Obstet

April 2024

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Alexandra Hospital, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens-Faculty of Medicine,, Emvryomitriki Fetal Medicine Unit, 41 D.Soutsou Str, 11521, Athens, Greece.

Purpose: To explore the contribution of maternal and fetal parameters in predicting the time interval between diagnosis and development of adverse events leading to delivery in singleton pregnancies complicated with fetal microsomia.

Methods: Prospective study on singleton pregnancies referred to a tertiary center because of suspicion of fetal smallness in the third trimester. The study cohort included cases with fetal abdominal circumference (AC) ≤ 10th centile or estimated fetal weight ≤ 10th centile or umbilical artery pulsatitlity index ≥ 90th centile.

Aims: This study aims to investigate the different phenotypes of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM), in correlation to preeclampsia and uterine arteries resistance.

Materials: This is a prospective cohort study including women with and without GDM per the IADPSG criteria. Three phenotypes of GDM emerged, women with only abnormal fasting (AF) glucose levels, women with only abnormal post-load (AP) glucose levels at 60' and/or 120' and women with abnormal combined (AC) fasting and post-load glucose values.

Introduction: Breast and prostate cancer survivors can experience impaired quality of life (QoL) in several QoL domains. The current strategy to support cancer survivors with impaired QoL is suboptimal, leading to unmet patient needs. ASCAPE aims to provide personalized- and artificial intelligence (AI)-based predictions for QoL issues in breast- and prostate cancer patients as well as to suggest potential interventions to their physicians to offer a more modern and holistic approach on cancer rehabilitation.

Introduction: A great heterogeneity characterises the paediatric population with ataxia, which has been studied poorly. The lack of postural control and coordination, in addition with features of the 'ataxic' gait are linked with functional limitations. Studies on physiotherapy interventions for children with ataxia are highly needed for identifying optimal training strategies for improving motor and functional related skills.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare all-cause mortality rates in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and systemic sclerosis (SSc) against the general population.
  • It analyzed anonymized data from over 11 million Greek citizens and found that survival rates were the lowest for SSc, followed by SLE and inflammatory arthritis, with increased mortality observed over time.
  • Despite improvements in survival for RA, AS, and PsA, patients with SLE and SSc had significantly higher mortality rates, especially among men and those under 50 years old.

Over the last couple of months physicians world wide are struggling to prevent the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) spread all over the world. It has become obvious that our health care systems should under go modifications in order to successfully confront similar pandemics, since this is considered the ''century of pandemics'', due to the high incidence of new virus attacks with expressly high virulence (Hong Kong flu in 1968, AIDS, SARS in 2002, H1N1 pandemic in 2009, MERS in 2012 and COVID-19 in 2020) (1).
