The most common cancer-related death in the world is non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Gemcitabine (GEM) is a common and effective first-line chemotherapeutic drug for the treatment of NSCLC. However, the long-term use of chemotherapeutic drugs in patients usually induces cancer cell drug resistance, leading to poor survival, and prognosis.

Peri-implantitis is a common complication characterized by inflammation in tissues surrounding dental implants due to plaque accumulation, which can lead to implant failure. While air flow abrasive treatment has been found to be effective for debriding implant surfaces, little is known about the factors that affect its cleaning capacity. This study systematically examined the cleaning capacity of air powder abrasive (APA) treatment with β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) powder, using various powder jetting strengths and different particle sizes.

The decline in oocyte quality with age is an irreversible process that results in low fertility. Reproductive aging causes an increase in oocyte aneuploidy leading to a decrease in embryo quality and an increase in the incidence of miscarriage and congenital defects. Here, we show that the dysfunction associated with aging is not limited to the oocyte, as oocyte granulosa cells also show a range of defects related to mitochondrial activity.

Studies continue to underscore the profound impact of sexual violence on women's health. Yet, little is known about the impact, via a complex matrix of behavioural and social factors, of first intercourse, namely forced non-consensual on HIV status, particularly among sexually active women (SAW) in low-income countries where HIV prevalence remains high. Using a national sample from Eswatini, we employed multivariate logistic regression modelling to estimate the associations between forced first-sex (FFS), subsequent sexual behaviour and HIV status among 3555 SAW aged from 15 years to 49 years.

Whether the modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS) is useful for patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) remains controversial. An electronic database search on EMBASE, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library from inception to 30 June 2022 was performed for study selection and data extraction. The associations between the mGPS and survival outcomes were evaluated using a random-effects meta-analysis and expressed as pooled hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs.

Background: Previous studies have shown an association between hyperuricemia and microvascular diseases, but the association between uric acid and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) remains unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between gout and AAA.
Methods: A population-based cohort study was conducted to validate the association between gout and AAA formation.

High blood pressure (BP) and type-2 diabetes (T2DM) are forerunners of chronic kidney disease and left ventricular dysfunction. Home BP telemonitoring (HTM) and urinary peptidomic profiling (UPP) are technologies enabling risk stratification and personalized prevention. UPRIGHT-HTM (NCT04299529) is an investigator-initiated, multicenter, open-label, randomized trial with blinded endpoint evaluation designed to assess the efficacy of HTM plus UPP (experimental group) over HTM alone (control group) in guiding treatment in asymptomatic patients, aged 55-75 years, with ≥5 cardiovascular risk factors.

Objective: Although unhealthy diets exacerbate nutritional and metabolic derangements in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), how therapeutic diets that possess a variety of different dietary strategies acutely modify diverse biochemical parameters related to cardiovascular disease remains underexplored.
Methods: Thirty-three adults with end-stage kidney disease undergoing thrice-weekly hemodialysis participated in a randomized crossover trial comparing a therapeutic diet with their usual diets for 7 days, separated by a 4-week washout period. The therapeutic diet was characterized by adequate calorie and protein amounts, natural food ingredients with a low phosphorus-to-protein ratio, higher portions of plant-based food, and high fiber content.

Background: Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMSCs) have high therapeutic value in cancer treatment. We have found that pre-activating hUCMSCs with IL-1β promotes tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis inducing ligand (TRAIL) expression and facilitates anti-tumor effect. Furthermore, embelin has been found to induce apoptosis of different cancer cell lines by upregulating the expression of TRAIL receptor 1 (DR4) and TRAIL receptor 2 (DR5).

Background: Allergic asthma occurs worldwide and is particularly prevalent in westernized countries characterized by chronic airway inflammation resulting in airway hyperresponsiveness. The house dust mites (HDM) including Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus are major sources of sensitization and triggering allergic symptoms in asthmatic patients. The Der p 2 is a major allergen and the predominant source of causative respiratory disorders which induce airway inflammation and bronchial constriction in mite-allergic patients.

This report describes a unique case of systemic diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) with initial ocular manifestations of bilateral optic disc edema and serous retinal detachment (SRD). A 29-year-old man presented with altered color vision in the left eye, mild fever, weakness, and headache, followed by bilaterally reduced visual acuity. Anterior segment and vitreous examinations showed no inflammation with sluggish response of light reflex.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive management strategy that has been widely applied for benign and recurrent malignant thyroid lesions as an alternative to surgery in Taiwan. Members of academic societies for specialists in interventional radiology, endocrinology, and endocrine surgery collaborated to develop the first consensus regarding thyroid RFA in Taiwan. The modified Delphi method was used to reach a consensus.

In this study, we determined the diagnostic performance of adding ultrasound (US) with/without fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) to computed tomography (CT)/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in evaluating neck lymphadenopathy (LAP) in patients with head and neck cancer treated with irradiation. We included 269 patients who had neck LAP after radiotherapy (RT) or concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) resulting from cancers of the head and neck region between October 2008 and September 2018. The diagnostic methods consisted of the following: 1) CT/MRI alone, 2) CT/MRI combined with a post-RT US predictive model, and 3) CT/MRI combined with US + FNAC.

Background: We previously identified matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) as one of the most promising salivary biomarkers for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and developed a sensitive ELISA for MMP-1 with good performance in detection of OSCC using a cohort of 1160 saliva samples.
Methods: A time-saving rapid strip test (RST) for MMP-1 was developed in this study and its diagnostic performance compared with ELISA using saliva samples from a new cohort of 603 subjects (171 healthy controls, 236 patients with oral potentially malignant disorders, and 196 OSCC patients).
Results: Salivary MMP-1 levels measured using RST and ELISA were highly comparable and both assays could effectively distinguish between OSCC and non-cancerous groups.

Objective: Hereditary amyloid transthyretin (ATTRv) amyloidosis with polyneuropathy, a rare autosomal-dominant disease, has gained attention in recent years owing to treatment improvements. However, epidemiological real-world mega database of nationwide natural history and survival rates, especially with the specific mutation of Ala97Ser, are limited.
Methods: Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database contains data from over 23 million individuals; Among them, 175 ATTRv amyloidosis patients validated by rare disease registry were enrolled.
