It has been well established that high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) is strongly associated with obesity, insulin resistance, high blood pressure, and dyslipidemia. However, the effects of different lipid parameters on hs-CRP levels are less deliberated. The purpose of the study was to compare the relative contribution of triglycerides (TGs), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) to the levels of hs-CRP.

Article Synopsis
  • Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMTs) are rare tumors linked to low phosphate levels in the body, primarily due to the secretion of fibroblast growth factor 23.
  • In a study of a larger PMT cohort, some tumors previously classified as "fusion-negative" were re-identified as fusion-positive with newly discovered genetic fusions, including FN1::ZACN.
  • The research also found that many fusion-negative PMTs exhibited overexpression of KL/α-Klotho, with notable genetic rearrangements, hinting at underlying mechanisms affecting KL regulation that merit further inquiry.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study sequenced GJB2 and other deafness-related genes in patients with extreme variations of SNHI severity to explore this phenotypic variability, identifying additional pathogenic variants in some patients with severe-to-profound hearing loss.
  • * Notably, a specific variant (CRYL1 rs14236) was found more frequently in patients with severe-to-profound SNHI compared to those with milder forms, suggesting that both additional genetic factors

Objective: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is characterized by localized bone loss, general osteoporosis and increased fracture risks. Tumour necrosis factor inhibitors (TNFi), non-tumour necrosis factor inhibitors (non-TNFi) biologic, Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKi) had shown the suppression effects to osteoclast activation and improvement of bone mineral density (BMD). Anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibody (ACPA) is associated with osteoclast activation and the resultant bone loss.

Background: The physical environments in which women give birth can contribute positively to meeting both physiologic and psychosocial needs during labor. Most studies on the labor and delivery processes have focused on mitigating pain and providing psychological support. Fewer have explored the influence of the physical birth environment.

With the popularization of lung cancer screening, many persistent subsolid nodules (SSNs) have been identified clinically, especially in Asian non-smokers. However, many studies have found that SSNs exhibit heterogeneous growth trends during long-term follow ups. This article adopted a narrative approach to extensively review the available literature on the topic to explore the definitions, rationale, and clinical application of different interval growths of subsolid pulmonary nodule management and follow-up strategies.

Association of Nasopharynx Cancer with Human Papillomavirus Infections.

Cancers (Basel)

August 2023

School of Health Care Administration, College of Management, Taipei Medical University, Taipei 110, Taiwan.

This population-based study aims to examine the association between nasopharyngeal carcinoma and human papillomavirus infections. This study included 2747 individuals aged 20 years and older who were diagnosed with nasopharynx cancer as cases and 13,735 propensity-score-matching controls. Multivariate logistic regression models were employed to quantitatively assess the association of nasopharynx cancer with human papillomavirus infections while considering age, sex, monthly income, geographic location, and urbanization level of the patient's residence as well as diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia.

Cardiovascular and Mitochondrial Related Disease Research Center, Buddhist Tzu Chi General Hospital, Buddhist Tzu Chi Medical Foundation, Hualien, Taiwan.

Liver inflammation has become increasingly prevalent in recent years, leading to the development of diseases like hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, and fatty liver disease. One factor that has been linked to liver inflammation is increased levels of lipopolysaccharides (LPS), which can be caused by poor diets and sedentary lifestyles that contribute to liver inflammation. There is promising research on a new class of lipids called fatty acid esters of hydroxy fatty acids (FAHFAs), which have been shown to potentiate insulin release and exert an anti-inflammatory effect.

  • This study investigates the best management strategies for elderly patients (aged 80+) with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in Taiwan, examining treatment options and mortality risks.
  • Researchers analyzed data from the Taiwan Cancer Registry for patients diagnosed between 2010 and 2017, focusing on the impact of curative, palliative, and no treatment on survival outcomes.
  • Results indicated that elderly patients receiving either palliative or curative treatments experienced significantly lower mortality risks compared to those who did not receive any treatment, highlighting the need for further research on their complications and quality of life.

Attenuation of epithelial-mesenchymal transition via SGLT2 inhibition and diabetic cataract suppression by dapagliflozin nanoparticles treatment.

Life Sci

October 2023

Department of Medical Education and Research, Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, Kaohsiung 81362, Taiwan; Institute of Biomedical Sciences, National Sun Yat-Sen University, Kaohsiung 80424, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Aims: Chronic hyperglycemia triggers overproduction of AKR1B1 (aldo-keto reductase family 1 member B) and receptor for advanced glycation end product (RAGE), which causes epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in the lens epithelial cells (LECs) of diabetic mellitus (DM) cataracts. However, it is unclear whether EMT in LECs is related to abnormal increase of SGLT2. Sodium glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, also known as dapagliflozin (Dapa) can be used to treat diabetes.

Data on the neuropsychological outcomes after receiving direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) among chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients have not been well-documented. This study aimed to evaluate the difference in incidence of neuropsychological disorders (NPDs) after treatment completion between CHC patients receiving interferon (IFN) therapy and DAA therapy. A nationwide retrospective cohort study was performed using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) between 2010 and 2018.

The present study aimed to investigate whether the addition of ultrasound (US) +/- fine needle aspiration (FNA) to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) improves the diagnostic accuracy in assessing neck lymphadenopathy in oral cancer patients after neck irradiation. We retrospectively reviewed oral cancer patients who had neck lymphadenopathy after radiotherapy (RT) or chemoradiation therapy (CRT) from February 2008 to November 2019. The following diagnostic modalities were assessed: (1) MRI/CT, (2) MRI/CT with a post-RT US predictive model, and (3) MRI/CT with US + FNA.

Ferroptosis, a recently discovered form of cell death, has been implicated in various diseases. However, the genetic relationship between ferroptosis and ovarian aging has not been thoroughly investigated through informatics analysis. In this study, we conducted bioinformatics analysis using ovarian aging and ferroptosis datasets to identify potential ferroptosis-related genes using R software.

Electronic address:

There is little evidence on whether gender difference influences the incidence of subclinical coronary atherosclerosis in Asian populations with a 0 score. In this study, we investigated the influence of age and gender on the extent of subclinical coronary atherosclerotic burden within a healthy Asian population with a 0 coronary artery calcium (CAC) score. A total of 934 participants (320 women and 614 men) from Taiwan's Han Chinese population with an initial CAC score of 0 were included in this study.
