Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have identified tens of thousands of genetic loci associated with human complex traits. However, the majority of GWASs were conducted in individuals of European ancestries. Failure to capture global genetic diversity has limited genomic discovery and has impeded equitable delivery of genomic knowledge to diverse populations.

This paper intends to investigate the feasibility of peripheral artery disease (PAD) diagnosis based on the analysis of non-invasive arterial pulse waveforms. We generated realistic synthetic arterial blood pressure (BP) and pulse volume recording (PVR) waveform signals pertaining to PAD present at the abdominal aorta with a wide range of severity levels using a mathematical model that simulates arterial blood circulation and arterial BP-PVR relationships. We developed a deep learning (DL)-enabled algorithm that can diagnose PAD by analyzing brachial and tibial PVR waveforms, and evaluated its efficacy in comparison with the same DL-enabled algorithm based on brachial and tibial arterial BP waveforms as well as the ankle-brachial index (ABI).

Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus has been linked to inflammation, immune dysregulation in offspring, and changes in the microbiota. It may have long-term implications for the health of children. The aim of this study was to determine if gestational diabetes mellitus increases the risk of allergic diseases in offspring.

On May 27, 2022, the Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society and the Heart Rhythm Society convened a meeting of leaders from different professional societies of healthcare providers committed to arrhythmia care from the Asia Pacific region. The overriding goals of the meeting were to discuss clinical and health policy issues that face each country for providing care for patients with electrophysiologic issues, share experiences and best practices, and discuss potential future solutions. Participants were asked to address a series of questions in preparation for the meeting.

Background/aim: In this study, we used an orthotropic breast cancer model combined with ketamine addiction and next-generation sequencing (NGS) to comprehensively investigate molecular alterations in ketamine-mediated metastasis. Ketamine is widely used in anesthesia and drug abuse. Our previous study revealed that ketamine promotes the growth of breast cancer cells; however, the detailed molecular mechanism remains unknown.

Urothelial cell carcinoma (UCC) is a common malignancy of the urinary tract in Taiwan. Metastasis-Associated in Colon Cancer 1 (MACC1), a newly identified oncogene and regulator of the HGF/Met signaling pathway, has been shown to play a critical role in the development and progression of several types of cancer. Our study aims to investigate the impact of gene polymorphisms on the clinicopathological features of patients with UCC.

Objective: It remains ambiguous as to whether the status of trace elements would affect their related enzyme activities toward defending a possible higher oxidative stress in patients receiving peritoneal dialysis (PD) or hemodialysis (HD) treatment. We investigated copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and selenium (Se) status in patients receiving PD or HD treatments and further determined the association of these trace elements with their related antioxidant capacities in those patients.
Methods: Sixty PD and 80 HD patients before and after HD treatment had their blood drawn.

Emerging evidence has demonstrated that using a new manufacturing technology to produce γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-fortified oolong (GO) tea could relieve human stress and exert versatile physiological benefits. The purpose of this human study was to investigate the therapeutic effects of daily GO tea consumption on improvements in blood pressure, relaxation-related brain waves, and quality of life (QOL) over a period of 28 consecutive days. Total polyphenols, major catechins, and free amino acids were analyzed via an HPLC assay.

CPT-11 is one of the drugs employed in colorectal cancer treatment and has faced challenges in the form of resistance. The insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor is a tyrosine kinase receptor that mediates cancer cell survival and drug resistance. It is frequently overexpressed in colorectal cancer and has previously been identified as a microRNA target.

The use of non-pharmacological strategies to complement pharmacological approaches can enhance cancer pain management by promoting patient autonomy and increasing management effectiveness. This study aimed to explore the required behavioral adaptations and situational barriers that cancer patients encounter when utilizing non-pharmacological strategies to manage pain. We adopted an exploratory-descriptive qualitative research approach, purposive sampling, and semi-structured interview guidelines to conduct face-to-face interviews with 18 cancer patients experiencing moderate or severe levels of worst pain.

LSM1 is part of the cytoplasmic protein complex Lsm1-7-Pat1 and is likely involved in pre-mRNA degradation by aiding U4/U6 snRNP formation. More research is needed to uncover LSM1's potential in breast cancer (BRCA) clinical pathology, the tumor immune microenvironment, and precision oncology. We discovered LSM1 as a diagnostic marker for advanced BRCA with poor survival, using a multi-omics approach.

The measurement of the neurofilament light chain (NFL) in human blood plasma/serum is a promising liquid biopsy for Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis, offering advantages over conventional neuroimaging techniques recommended in clinical guidelines. Here, a controllable nano-brush structure comprising upstanding silicon nanowires coated with indium tin oxide was employed as the sensing substrate. This nano-brush structure was modified with an NFL antibody (NFLAb) via silane coupling and then further connected as the extended gate in a field-effect transistor (EGFET).

Aims: Breast mucinous cystadenocarcinoma (BMCA) is a rare tumour recently recognised as a distinct entity by the World Health Organisation Tumour Classification Series. BMCA is a triple-negative tumour that lacks specific immunohistochemical markers; therefore, distinguishing it from mimickers such as ovarian and pancreatic cystadenocarcinomas requires careful clinicopathological correlation. Due to its rarity, little is known about the molecular alterations that underlie BMCA.

Serine integrases promote the recombination of two complementary DNA sequences, attP and attB, to create hybrid sequences, attL and attR. The reaction is unidirectional in the absence of an accessory protein called recombination directionality factor. We utilized tethered particle motion (TPM) experiments to investigate the reaction behaviors of two model serine integrases from Listeria innocua phage LI and Streptomyces coelicolor phage C31.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis has poor clinical outcomes despite antifibrotic treatment. The nucleotide-binding domain leucine-rich repeat-containing receptor, pyrin domain-containing-3 (NLRP3) inflammasome and endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndoMT) were shown to be involved in the pathogenesis of pulmonary fibrosis. However, the detailed mechanism is unknown.
